Backlog Assassination : September2020

New month, new post, this time I’m not too late, just one day, one little day.

ANYWAY !

Since I’m having a super bad day, I’m just gonna go straight to the meat and potatoes of that post.

Best Of This Month

  • Gem Master : This game is challenging and fun, there is no need of a tutorial for you to play, each party lasts less than a minute and there are different AI to fight against. It’s less than $5 and I would say that if you like strategy and quick party, this may be a good pick for you.
  • When The Past Was Around : As expected it was a beautiful “game”, it’s more a story with small puzzles and you should buy it if that sort of game is enough for you, if you like cute story but dislike simple gameplay or believe that the price is too heavy, then watch a walkthrough, the game is short enough to be enjoyed in one sitting.

As it happens very often with me, I just play whatever I fancy rather than feeling forced by a challenge or another. In my mind, what I set to play the 1st of the month may simply not be what I want to play the next 30 days, and it doesn’t matter. As usual, playing games is an activity we do mostly for fun and I only pick what brings me fun as I just want to have a nice experience.

Oh wow, you really played a lot of games again!

When the past was around does look really beautiful indeed. Shame that I have too many games to play already :)

It’s a really short one, you won’t lose much watching a walkthrough.

I’m catching up on BLAEO posts I missed due to Game Pass.

Anyway, as someone who liked Good Snowman, I completely agree with what you said and would’ve given up there if it weren’t for walkthroughs. Honestly, the main reason I’d still recommend it is simply because of how hard it can be to find a(n otherwise) mechanically-consistent puzzle game that’s also challenging. They may not be getting less common, but they’re definitely getting more obscure.

I believe it’s because not everybody knows that this type of game is called “Sokoban”, if you want to try one which is challenging and cool, I encourage you to test Kine.
I did like Good Snowman, but it’s not an excuse for that completely obscure “night” part which you cannot understand if you don’t have a walkthrough. They wanted to simplify the instructions by only adding bubbles as text, but it’s not enough to understand what the hell happens in there.

Hey, thanks for the recommendation!

I believe it’s because not everybody knows that this type of game is called “Sokoban”,

I dunno about that; I’ve played non-Sokoban games that are mechanically-consistent (Sutte Hakkun, Toki Tori 1, Wargroove), and I’ve also played Sokoban games that regularly introduce new gimmicks and make you figure them out through trial and error (Baba Is You).

Sokoban style only mean that is a puzzle where you push items to place them in a specific location, baba is you does just that with a twist.
You may also want to try Helltaker, really fast but free sokoban with limited movements.

Yeah, I know. It just seemed like when I said “it can be [hard] to find a(n otherwise) mechanically-consistent puzzle game that’s also challenging” and you responded with “I believe it’s because not everybody knows that this type of game is called ‘Sokoban,’” it seemed like you were implying all Sokoban games were mechanically-consistent within themselves, which isn’t the case.

baba is you does just that with a twist.

It’s also possible for a puzzle game to have a twist while still being mechanically-consistent within itself and not regularly introducing new gimmicks throughout the game that need to be discovered via trial and error.

(and I already have Helltaker in my backlog; I just wanna play the games I got before it first)

Oh, what I meant is that type of puzzle with pushing blocks and stuff do have a name. I do love Sokoban puzzle games, but for long I had no idea they were called that way, so when I was looking for puzzles with that type of mechanics, I was even more challenged to find a game which had that type of gameplay. That’s why I said that having the right word to do your research, it’s suddenly easier to find puzzles which are adopting the mechanics aspect while at the same time twisting it to make it more difficult for example.
Helltaker takes around 30mn to go through if you’re interested in having a short game to pass time (it’s a tiny game and you can skip some puzzles if you’re annoyed by some, though they can all be solved, the last one being pretty difficult tbh).
