Update One Hundred and Sixty-Two: 28 April 2018
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Last week or so BLAEO user Zelrune gifted me a copy of the Little Acre and on a whim I decided to play it now, rather than several months from now as is common.
I’ve run into an unfortunate trend of point and clicks with amazing visuals and subpar everything else. I was a little nervous this would be the same, since a big focus is on its really charming 2D animation.
And… it wasn’t! It was a fine little game. The animation IS its clear selling point - there’s nothing quite else like it, and it’s clear a lot of hard work and experience was put into it, even though it could be a little TOO floaty/bouncy at times. The game is very short, and the characters don’t super have depth to them, but it’s a fun romp for an afternoon, and the fantasy world they travel to is interesting. Everything has a lot of shine and polish.
There are some flaws - it’s pretty surface, this game. The interface isn’t the best, and has very little config options. The manual save and load is kind of hidden away, and you only get one save slot. The port from xBox wasn’t done as thoroughly as it should have been - in a handful of scenes the ‘A’ ‘B’ ‘X’ button prompts still hovered over objects of interest. Beyond that, it’s a cute game good for not thinking super hard.
It’s also a first - I got a speedrun achievement without really trying! It was pretty rewarding.
This review is a little disjointed because I’m pretty tired. I spent a good portion of this evening transcribing a text walkthrough of this game. I hope people can find it useful!
Next up: Let’s try a freebie tomorrow, hmm?
See you soon!
