These games just have NOT been agreeing with me, you guys. I’m shelving this one for now.
Wheels of Aurelia is a really bad driving sim wrapped in a very sparse VN that is saved from disaster only by a nice style. This is where ‘hybrid genre games’ fail - they try to do two things and don’t accomplish either well.
You can’t skip scenes you’ve seen already, and if you’re playing to get all the endings you’re going to sit through the same conversations a LOT. Some of the endings are predicated on you driving ‘well’, without crashing into things. This would be fine if this were a GOOD racing sim, or if you drove and did conversations separately. Neither of those things are true. There’s a ‘normal’ speed and a ‘fast’ speed, and if you stay in the ‘normal’ speed, the game tells you, the car will drive on its own and you can focus on the conversation, essentially putting it on a rail. This would be fine, if the car didn’t drift wildly outside of the lane and plow into cars coming from both directions.
The conversations aren’t crazy good to write home about, either - at least not the ones I got. I also got a lot of dialogue glitches or mistakes - characters would just repeat the same 2 or 3 lines over and over again, or an option would come up after the subject has changed. Twice the dialogue system just froze and I had to restart the playthrough.
This is a shame, because the game is set in 1978 Italy, and they talk a lot about social movements of the time and politics and I know pretty much nothing about modern-ish Italy and I’d love to learn. They included a ‘Wheelpedia’ of wiki excerpts about things they mention and it’s really interesting to read! It’s just not worth it to me right now to keep sitting through the same things over and over.
I’ll try to revisit this in the future, maybe periodically - get two endings and then move on, or something.

I am pretty interested - if it’s another ‘Hatoful Boyfriend’ type thing I’d love it. It’s very front-loaded with their ‘THIS IS HORROR’ thing, which on the one hand I appreciate (thanks for putting up your content warnings!) but on the other hand really loses the element of surprise.
