Update One Hundred and Eighty-Four: 14 June 2018
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
A short VN that, unfortunately, features an interesting story that’s hampered by technical issues and strange punctuation decisions.
On Earth as it is in Heaven follows a heavenly Scribe, Sencil, as he’s banished from heaven for not doing his job correctly. He’s taken in by a family in Spain and rediscovers what it is to be human, and where he belongs.
It’s a promising project that doesn’t super deliver. Everything has a caveat. The art is good… but there literally is one sprite for everyone, so there will be a tense scene and everyone is still smiling away. The sprite triggering is also messed up, so character sprites don’t enter or leave the screen when they should, resulting in ridiculous pile-ups of sprites overlapping sprites of people who had left the scene ten minutes ago.
One thing in particular is how, for some reason, they replaced em-dashes (—) with apostraphes (‘), which was absolutely fucking bewildering to me, not in the least because I love em dashes and I will love them until the day I die. It’s also unprecedented, so I had to constanly keep rereading sentences to parse them correctly. Like ‘So I decided to ‘ no, I’m not done talking!’ vs. ‘So I decided to—no, I’m not done talking!’ That really shouldn’t have been.
The story was cute, though, and while it misses being on my VN Masterlist, I still think that if you happen to pick it up, it’s worth it to read.
Next up: A VN I probably wouldn’t have picked up on my own, but kept from a bundle. Let’s spend time with these weird-looking catgirls!
See you soon!
