Update Three Hundred and Fourteen: 10 June 2019
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Whooo I’m glad that’s over.
Okay, well, if you’re going to play a horny VN for the sake of playing a horny VN, you might as well play this one. Mutiny!! is a game with sex front and center and it makes no bones or apologies about it… sometimes to its detriment. The art is okay, if a little wonky at times, and the mainline routes actually have some character building that was surprising to me. They explore these characters deeper than ‘this one lines getting tied up’ and ‘this one likes getting fucked by plants,’ which, you know, is something. About half of the female cast have vaginas and the other half have penises, a fact that the game will make sure you know. I was initially very :/ about the futa focus, but did see a moderately positive interaction between the devs and a trans lesbian in the discussions talking about it. The lead writer apparently is also a trans lesbian, and most if not all of the staff are queer, which puts a different spin on things. It ended up not being what I was afraid it would be, so at least there’s that.
What holds the game back, though, is uneven and clunky writing and how fuckin pushy the main character is, though I guess, for some, that’s part of the enjoyment. Her being sexually forward is not just fine but a welcome change from female VN protagonists… but a good half of the romantic interests start out initially uncomfortable or absolutely uninterested in her, which she proceeds to push through and wear them down about before they give in (if you get the good ending, of course). That bugged me.
The DLC routes, especially Grozdana’s, were pretty disappointing. There’s less material for them and less character exploration. To get all achievements (and endings), you need the DLC, and then to complete each route THREE times. Doing the ship battle minigame over and over was a huge fuckin drag.
Next up: Ooooo! This one looks good! I can play this and squint really hard and pretend I’m playing Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin!
Also, Madison got this for me last year! Thanks, babe!
See you soon!
Yes, Hakuoki, YES! It is SUCH a good game! I mean, I haven’t touched the Kyoto/Edo versions, so I wouldn’t know about the characters that were added, but I’ve played most of the PS3 version and I absolutely adore it. Don’t think one could choose better than this when it comes to localized otome games…? From what I’ve played so far, that is.
That all sounds dope as hell and makes me more excited to play BUT -
Amitte, is Cece right? You don’t even kiss in this game???
Pff, nah. I mean, the Kyoto/Edo versions are different from the PS3 one, but I think we all know that console games are more PC when it comes to being lovey-dovey (or… inching towards the other side of that spectrum) than PC games, sooo… Point is, I can confirm that you kiss your love interests; it’s just that it takes a long build-up, mostly filled with action as feudal Japan… well, feuds. At least it’s realistic, by the end of a character route you totally feel the guy and you can slump back in your chair when it finally happens, you know?
I think I get it now - they split the PC release up so this game stops when they go to Edo, where the rest of the story takes place. Makes sense why they don’t kiss in this game - we’re only halfway through the romance!
Ooo, I see! Well then… I guess I know now why it’s 10 GB of “nothing”, in a way, heh. Please don’t rate it badly because of that though, I’m sure it’s as good as the PS3 release, if not better!
I do admit I was a little :/ on the game until I realized it was precisely that - only one half of the story arcs. I’m a little more forgiving about it now.
Besides, it’s got more bachelors up for dating than the PS3 release, sooo… ^^
