Update One Hundred and Seventy-Two: 19 May 2018
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
I woke up this morning and found I had won a giveaway! Not just any giveaway, but a Playing Appreciated giveaway! Just to be safe, I decided to take today to play it.
Beyond the Invisible is one of those rare non-Artifex Mundi hidden object games - and one with a male player character to boot! It feels a little pandering and unrealistic to have a hidden object game protagonist not just be a man, but an old man at that!* But, a bonus! He’s voiced by SungWon Cho, also known as ProZD. You might have seen some of his vines around. He’s a cool, funny guy, and it was a nice surprise to hear him in the game, even though he doesn’t say very much.
Other than that, though, this game is pretty average for a hidden object game. The art is very pretty, but on the other hand the translation is really really bad. Unescapably bad. EVERY time you pick up and object, it tells you ‘It may come useful!’ The voice actors did their best, but the most likely machine-translated lines are difficult to pull off right.
Oh, and actually, looking at it again now - the woman in the main banner does not have her armor low-cut like that in the game, she’s all covered up. I suppose they wanted to further pander outside of their REAL audience. Man, this is why hidden object games should continue being for women!*
One other knock against it: you have to play the game three times to get all the achievements. That’s right, the difficulty achievements DO NOT stack. Funnily enough, I spotted BLAEO user Trent in the discussion forums for this game, cheerfully saying how he was going to skip this one because of that. I couldn’t precisely blame him, but I had a commitment and stuck with it. That’s 100 Yirg points and 100% completion for me!
Next up: okay okay I’ll play Jade Empire I promise
See you soon!
*this is a joke. can you imagine how many variations of these comments I’ve ever had to read?
Oh dang, kudos to you xD I’m too lame to get 100% on most games, and definitely not one where I have to do the exact same story 3 times ;,) I’m usually too lazy for even just branches off the story xD
I don’t think you’re lame! You just play games for different reasons than I do.
And it’s not so bad - you can click to skip through all the story parts, and after a while it even gets kind of meditative, like weaponized deja vu. I know exactly when and where to do stuff. I think my third runthrough was only like a half hour - if that.
Oh dang, nice :o
I saw you played this in the group tool and thought to my sell she surely had to have written an review about it :D Good to know about the difficulties nonsense, thanks. Definitely not picking it up unless I manage to somehow win it.
P.S. I approved the win for you, always makes me really happy approving newly won games :3
Yeah, the difficulty achievements really turned a ‘pretty good aside from the really bad translation’ hidden object game into a ‘ehhh…. unless you win it or have ZERO other hidden object games to play’, which is unfortunate.
That was you? Oh, thank you! I’ve never gotten to a win so fast but I’m very glad to do so. Aside from BLAEO, Playing Appreciated is my favorite group I’m a part of.
Yea such a shame the devs didn’t think about it a little and do what almost every other dev out there figured out already… Oh well, there is a bunch of other HOGs out there :D
Yup, had nothing better to do at 2am :P
