Ugh.

Okay, this review will be pretty short because today I lost my job. I was laid off because the company was struggling financially, and while it wasn’t a surprise, I had sorely hoped it wouldn’t happen. I had wanted Pillars of Eternity to be a refuge from me not getting a job I really wanted, but now I’m even lower than that.

Yeah. It’s…. not been great.

I’ve never played a CRPG before and I ended up getting Pillars of Eternity from Humble Monthly. I don’t think it was the best one to start out with - I also have the Shadowrun collection and I probably should’ve started with those. I like sci-fi far more than fantasy, and Pillars of Eternity is as fantasy as they come.

It’s…. all right, but I didn’t feel connected to what was going on at all. The strategy elements kept me out of the story, and eventually I felt like I was watching myself watching things happen. Nothing…. really mattered. The biggest disappointment was the end of act 2. No spoilers, but…. no matter what you do, the big bad comes in and fucks everything up. A series of quest lines that took eight hours to finish… and the result is ultimately the same, no matter who you sided with or how you got things done. After that, I really checked out of this game.

I’m going to leave CRPGs alone for a while - I don’t like how removed they feel.

I…. don’t have a lot more to say today, you guys. I hope you’ve had a better day than I did.

Next up: I’m starting my participation in the monthly theme with

See you soon!

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that! hug

Also sorry to hear about the game. Hope Broken Age will work out better for you :)
Happy rewind killing :)

tsupertsundere

Thank you, Nin. I do like Broken Age - it’s why I picked it first to go back to. Mr. Schaefer always makes me laugh.

ninglor03

That sounds good! :)

Nooooooooooo
I don’t really know much about you but I like reading your posts and I’ve been happy with the supp,y of VN posts. I’m sorry >_<

\o/ Good luck with this month’s theme.

tsupertsundere

Thanks, Blue c: That strangely feels really good to hear - I’m glad that you get value out of the stuff I write.

I’m happy about this month’s theme - it’ll be good to retire some games from my ‘to revisit’ list

Blue Ϟ Lightning

I hope you feel a weight removed from your shoulders when finishing games from your to revisit list.
personally finishing a game I’ve been playing for awhile makes me feel better.

*hugs*

That sucks, I’m really sorry to hear. :( Sending lots of positive vibes your way, I hope you’re able to find another job soon and that things work out.
Hope you enjoy Broken Age!

tsupertsundere

Thank you, Jaffa! I’m putting the effort in - I got an interview on Friday and I just put in for my local library which I love, and I’m going to focus on volunteering to build a network, fill out my resume, and feel good about myself. The vibes are lovely and appreciated.

JaffaCaffa

That’s great that you immediately turned it towards something positive, I hope the interview goes well! And libraries really are the best, sounds like an awesome thing to be a part of. :)

Sorry to hear that. I hope playing a game you really enjoy will cheer you up a bit and that the future has nice things in store for you.

tsupertsundere

c:> thank you, Lengray. I hope so, too. I’m glad to revisit old beloved games. I want the future to have nice things - it’d be a good change.

Hey, sorry to hear about the job. What line of work do you do, if its not a secret ? How is finding new job looking ?

Also, Pillars of Eternety is my first in this genre too. PLayed it for some hours, and actually have positive emotions about it. I dont really have anything against fantasy, so pretty enjoyable. Will try to get back to it and try to finish the story.

Hi Chris! Thanks. I got laid off from an Office Clerk position where I was scanning and archiving documents for mortgages - I was on the job hunt recently to move more into a field I’m interested in, which is editing and publishing. The new job prospects for that was…. well, it just takes time. There are far more applicants than job openings here, and I’m competing with people who have more experience than I do. To cheer myself up, I told myself ‘well, all I need to do is just stay in this job to get experience!!!’ and then…. :/ welp!
I’m going to keep looking, broaden my scope, and also network in other ways. I talked above a little about volunteering - it’s a way to get out, meet people, see what’s out there, and do something good for others and myself. I’m also looking at freelance writing.
It’s….. a lot, and it blows, but I’ll get through it somehow!

I enjoyed Pillars at the beginning, too, but the emotions just didn’t sustain for me. I can definitely see why it’s popular, and appreciate the work that went into it (and that it was a crowdfund success), I guess at the end of the day it wasn’t for me.
My favorite part about it was the party members. I actually had to struggle to decide who should be in my party, and I ended up really liking all of them!

Well.. it happens to the best of us.. Good luck finding a new job. Volunteering and freelancing sounds as a great first steps :)
I myself started as an intern in pretty huge company. Boss told me that she was ready to hire me full-time. But about that time some enourmos norwegian gompany bought it. They did things differently and they changed the hole infrastructure of workplaces. That meant massive layoffs (even of those who worked there for many many years) and definitely no new hirings. Happened to be there at a bad time.
After that I just went to university to follow my passion. Going great and will be doing even more enjoyable things that I would have done in that company.. So look at it like a new chance to do something else. And just step up and do it.

Sorry to hear about that. They lost an awesome person when they decided to lay you off. Things will go get better for you, i’m sure :)

That was my fear with pillars of eternity which is why I didn’t buy it. I have never played a game like it and it seems to difficult for a beginner like me.

Kap

I’m sorry to hear about that, and while it’s an old cliche to say that every cloud has a silver lining, you just might find opportunities now that you could have missed had you stayed at that job. I find that many things that feel disappointing or unfortunate at the time often work out for the best in the end. :)
