Back to the Future: The Game

Game’s also my first entry for this month’s theme :)

This is one of those “on the line/edge” games.. which means I don’t always enter when I see them.. let’s say there are games with higher priority =P

I love the movies and I feared that a game about it would have been bad. Also, it has no achievements (not a great loss but I’m prioritizing games with them as I feel a bit more motivated to progress.. even if I recently have (re)discovered the pleasure of playing games without achievements and “savour” whatever it had to offer me, without the constant fear of missing a possible 100% because of a single collectible/talk/whatever and the following replay of the whole game).
With these contrasting thoughts in my head I entered but only with the intention of playing immediately if I were the winner, and to not let it rot for ages in my library. (hey, this theme thing is working!)
..and guess what? I won! :D :D

Ep 1 - It’s About Time
Started the game without knowing what it was expecting me. After being lost for a short while I pleasantly realized that I was going to venture into a new story, happened after the movies! Sweet! :3
But then I met the strange way to move Marty :\
Story doesn’t seem that great but I still have faith ‘cause this is only the first episode.
Ep 2 - Get Tannen!
Still feeling uncomfortable while moving Marty.
Also, got stuck in a puzzle because I must have missed some detail in some conversation. (I wasn’t fully aware yet of what was going on and wasn’t able to discern useful infos from “useless” ones).
But, story is getting a bit more complicated, good! :)
Ep 3 - Citizen Brown
Now we are talking! :D Blasted through this episode.
Things are getting really messed up, worthy of the saga, imho. YAY! :D
Wider framing and places made easier to control Marty (not that I’m starting to like it though).
There has been one sequence that I didn’t like. Not telling you anything to avoid spoiler but, basically, Marty had to do some action to progress in the game and, if not done correctly, other than the usual animation Marty also left the area (because there was an animation shown after entering the area) -_-
Started to experience also longer loading times, but it could an exclusive issue of my laptop (my fault for never turning it off) so don’t pay much attention to this.
Ep 4 - Double Visions
Story is proceeding great but this episode felt a bit like a filler (like they hadn’t the end ready yet, took a bit from it and from the previous episode, added something and created a new episode, while there could have easily been only 4).
Found some other annoying scenes with all the animation played whenever I had not done all the steps required for the puzzles. Not as annoying as the one in the 3rd chapter though.
During the aforementioned longer loading times, now the game seldom freezes a bit.
Ep 5 - OUTATIME - Finale!
Even longer loading times, game freezes and stuttering audio, the trilogy is finally complete! (Really, I need to turn off my laptop sometimes.. and to close a couple of tabs in chrome — 154 open as I write — they eat up all my RAM)
Great final chapter! the action came back after the previous more “dialogue-centered”..
I also felt like there were more animations and less playing compared to all the previous but that could be just an impression of mine.
The story ends well, didn’t seem they forgot anything. A bit “meh” about the end of the game, don’t get if they did it to leave the end “open” (like in the movies or for the possibility of a future sequel) or just for the Michael J. Fox’s cameo.. anyway, it goes against the very fundamental principle of the saga. That’s why I hope it was just to give MJF some more shots..

Overall, game’s not bad. If you like Back to the Future you should play it, the story is really worth imho. Controls aren’t on same level though :\ But you’ll endure through it if, like me, are a fan :)

There are other games from the theme I’d like to play but I have no time, so I played this one to keep my promise and I’m leaving the Backlog.. to the future!
