When I first read Higurashi—god, it must be four or so years ago by now. Five?—I read it all in one go. The first arc I remember being very distinct, but it seems as if the answer arc was more jumbled up in my memory than I thought! I could have sworn that the climax of THIS chapter was the climax of the seventh chapter. Now I’m more excited to reread the seventh—what else have I forgotten?
This chapter is where the cage of each individual story begins to loosen and crack apart, revealing glimpses into the meta-story that surrounded them. Continuing off of the fifth chapter, this chapter plays around with perspective, this time focusing on Keiichi sharing the spotlight with Rena (and even Ooishi getting a couple of short scenes to himself). The continual evolution of the story and how each character gets a turn to have their story deepened is a Ryukishi07 staple, and it works great! This chapter moves blindingly quickly, and the climax is legitimately heartclenching.
There’s a lot of tricks thrown at you, the reader, in this game Ryukishi07 is playing with you. What do you believe? Why? And how far are you willing to go for it?
Ryukishi07’s background as a social worker is brought to the forefront particularly strongly in this chapter, in a way that… maybe a LITTLE… is kind of hamfisted. I can’t disagree with him, though—trusting your friends is indeed important.
Start at the beginning of this landmark VN series! It’s on my Visual Novel Masterlist!! Love your friends, kill your friends, forgive your friends! In this world and the next!
Next up: I RESOLVE TO FINISH TALES OF BERSERIA BEFORE FEBRUARY IS OVER, but in the meantime—
See you soon!
I know nothing of this series but it’s lovely to see you that happy about it all. I hope you enjoy the seventh chapter when you get round to it!
Aww, shucks, Pete! It’s a good series!
The releases have been slow, but I think the seventh chapter is due to be out soon. I’m just excited for it all to be in one place, easily (and legally) accessible. I’m glad to make sure Ryukishi07 gets paid.
You’re so much faster than me, I’m only on chapter 3 of the second one xD
YOU CAN BEAT BERSARIA I BELIEVE IN YOU
Ha! As if! It took me WAY longer to get through this than I was hoping. One more week in February and I only removed 3 games this month from my backlog…
Thank you! I’m gonna try! I just need to buckle down!
It takes me forever to get through Higarushi just because of my adhd :,) And hey, 3 games is more than I get some months!
good luck with Berseria! i wandered off right before the final dungeon because i just got tired of it all but intend to go back to it and finish…….. someday. eventually. yeah.
Thank you c:
I like it a lot, it’s just… so much. So much so much. I’m pacing myself so I don’t get tired of it, but then the result is I don’t play anything else!
Man, I’m interested in this series but I haven’t even finished Steins;Gate yet. I’ve made a steady progress on it these past few days but it feels like there’s still so much left to go through lol. I guess I am a slow reader.
Good luck with Berseria! I’ve been having the same problem with both Tales and Final Fantasy series for years: dropping them around the middle of the game. The result is I’ve played a lot of their entries but I ended up finishing only a select few. Make sure to pace yourself well and you’ll outdo me lol
In that case, I’d say wait for Higurashi to be all released on Steam - I’m sure they’ll have a bundle deal where you can get them all at once at a discount.
I remember Steins;gate being a little bit slow to get through for me, too. Different VNs capture different people. I also am a distracted reader - why do you think my playtimes are so inflated, huh?
Ah, I don’t have problems dropping them - I finish them all, I just don’t like spending so long on one game. Makes me antsy… but, then again, a lot of things make me antsy. I am RIGHT before the final battle, I just have additional cleanup before and after. I believe I’m on track to finish before February is over!
fuck I have to get around to reading this.
I need some time to properly sit down and read through this and the chapter before it I own both and really want to read them sometime.
TIL. What a funny word!
Isn’t it? ‘Hamhanded’ is another related term that also is just particularly goofy.
