Update Two Hundred and Eleven: 13 August 2018
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
I always have the most energy on Mondays. I consider that lucky, because Monday is the most difficult day at work. A lot of my job is dealing with the ‘results’ of the day before, and Monday is when I deal with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This day in particular was long—I had to play catchup from a Friday when our internet was down the whole entire work day due to a dog chewing through our temporary internet line. I was able to work a full day, forty minutes of overtime (came in early), come home, finish schoolwork, AND beat a game. This is a huge distance from a year or two ago when doing maybe one (or a fraction) of those things would put me out for two days.
Then, of course, I lose all the energy by Wednesday…
Regardless! This is a review, and a good one at that! The Frostrune is closer to a hidden object game (sans the, you know, hidden object scenes) than a more traditional point and click in its UI and setup, and it’s a wonderful trip into 10th century Norway. I’d love more games like this where you get to explore a new place in a far-off time, steeped in its culture and folklore that you absorb just in exploring environments and handling items. Everything artistic and aural was well executed, from the VO to the soundtrack to the lush, painterly settings all glimmering in ice. There’s not THAT many places to explore, but there’s a shit ton of backtracking, which got a little annoying, crossing and recrossing tons of places I’ve been before.
I also wish the story was deeper, the character of Liv, the protagonist, actually expanded upon. That’s another place where it’s closer to hidden object games - the rather shallow, straightforward story.
It was still a lovely game to play for an evening—though maybe a less lovely game to speedrun, teeth grit the whole time, I will have my 100%—and I would recommend it to any fan of the genre, and any person wanting to get a bit more old Norway sea salt in their hair.
Next up: I haven’t asked RNGesus for a game to play in a while. I was given my first walking sim on my new laptop! I’m excited about—
See you soon!
I dont think I could manage dealing with that on monday :/
I didn’t think so, either, but then it… happened. And I wasn’t tired anymore.
Maybe you could, too, if you were called to do so!
