Update Three Hundred and Fifty-Two: 26 November 2019
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
While I’m well aware of its sociological issues (colonialism is bad!), I have a real soft spot for the turn-of-the-century archaeological tomb raidy stories. It’s what made me like Scheherazade and it’s what made me like These Nights in Cairo decently enough, even though you spend very little nights in Cairo and most nights in a mustaba outside of Saqqara.
A Russian-made VN, the English translation is one of the better I’ve seen, though still not without its issues. Things can get clunky, and there’s not the kind of nuance I especially enjoy in stories. There’s three routes: a mysterious Egyptian man with a mission, a roguish white guy in your father’s employ, and the antagonist from the first two routes. The first two routes are fairly simple and short, and the third, antagonist route is nearly twice as long. It feels like the protag actually gets to know the antagonist, rather than a few obligatory scenes and then you’re done.
It’s not a bad VN per se, just not one that stands out in any particular capacity. It was a nice, brisk read, and the CGs, largely, are good looking (same with the sprites). I just want something from more deft, capable hands. Even so, a pleasant enough 100%.
