Update Thirty-Five: 9 August 2017
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
They can’t all be winners, eh?
It’s pretty rare for me to quit VNs - even some awful ones (LOOKING AT YOU, NOTCH: THE INNOCENT LUNA ECLIPSED SINNERS) I was able to just speedrun through to get achievements. Quantum Conscience is a rare one where I don’t want to do even that.
I picked up this VN for cheap because I liked the premise - do you or do you not read your friends’ minds? It reminded me a lot of don’t take it personally, babe, it just ain’t your story where that centers around a similar mechanic - you’re a teacher, and have access to all of your students’ online lives. Email, IM, blogs, everything. Do you or do you not read them, even if the kids might not be all right?
Where that succeeds and Quantum Conscience fails is that, at least, when new things are available, the game tells you and you have the option to dismiss the alert or read the new im/email/blog post/whatever. In Quantum Conscience, there’s a large button that says ‘Void Stream’ that you click on, then pick from a drop down list on who you want to mind-read. Distance isn’t a problem, apparently - as soon as you link to one, you can read their minds whenever. And it’s just… it’s paranoia inducing, leading me to check every third line or something if a thought changed. It’s something I thought would be unique, but it turns out I’ve played it before and this game does it much, much worse.
That is an added negative weight on what otherwise is a rather uninspired, ugly visual novel. The story is presented poorly and not engaging, the main character is really juvenile and unlikable, and the art is mediocre. It fails on my Big Three Asks - is it pretty, is it smart, and does it play well? - and that makes me avoid playing it. I don’t got that luxury - I got like 64 other VN to read! Quantum Conscience is shelved.
Next up: omg, RNGesus must’ve been talking with ninglor. Next up is…
See you soon!
I’m glad that’s not a game I decided to buy and I let it sit in my wishlist for a while. If the only thing I was interested in is poorly executed… Well I think I won’t bother with this game. Thank you for your review! :D Looking forward your How to take off your mask one!
If you’re interested in the mechanic and want to try it out, the game I mentioned, don’t take it personally…. is free! It’s well worth it.
I already played it, and it was good!
I will just delete Quantum conscience from my wishlist since it won’t bring me what I wanted from it. :)
Got that one sitting in my shelf and waiting for me to come play it. Now I’m… ehm… unmotivated? :D
Who is RNGesus? Maybe I SHOULD talk with him :D
Have fun. Hope you like it :)
Happy VN killing!
Hahaha! RNGesus is what I call random.org, or the random number generator I use to pick what game I play next or what book I read next. Since I’m leaving it up to fate or, as some would say, leaving it up to god, the portmanteau RNG + Jesus sounds nice to my ears.
I’m sure I will!
Haha, that makes perfect sense!
But no, I don’t talk with him. I kinda let monthlies decide for me, what I play next :D
I played Quantum Conscience, and didn’t enjoy it all too much, either. I think it’d be better if it was a standard interactive fiction with just a slight touch of the mind reading (to solve simple puzzles, for example). Three of the 4 achievs unlocked for me after my 1st playthrough, I intend to do another playthrough to get the last achiev but not exactly looking forward to it, to be honest O.o
Right, or, like, you had in-the-moment options, or the ‘mind read’ button ONLY showed up when there was, like, important things to read so you could actually tell when it’s worthwhile to look.
I feel you, and I had kept your earlier comments in mind. 75% game completion shouldn’t be too big of a hit to your percentage, at least!
A Won’t play! So it’s that bad? I’m not gonna touch it for a long time then.
How to take off your mask is cute! There are some cliché things, but it’s entertaining enough. There’s also a sequel in the making.
It’s pretty uninspired, I would say. Having art I don’t like in a VN game is also pretty bad - it’s the only thing you look at, you know? And nobody told this artist shading with black and highlighting with white isn’t the good shit?
I heard! Did it make it through greenlight before greenlight died? Cliches are usually cliches for a reason - sometimes, done right and with a little bit of unique flavor, they can be really nice c: and I’m in the mood for cute n entertaining!
I don’t think it was on greenlight but the publisher has many other games, that means it shouldn’t be a problem for it to reach Steam when it will be done!
