January 2018 - 4th Week
So the first month of the year is already over again? Wow, how time flies…
Sword of Asumi
I really enjoyed this VN. It had much choices, I loved the art (maybe the breasts were a bit too big :b ) and awesome music (especially the title song) Still it had a lot of flaws. In my first playthrough I had trouble with all those characters as you can decide each day in which classes you want to go. That causes that you might never see a character before but when you do they act like you already know them. The target is also far too obvious. Also I missed a bit more pictures with the characters you date. You get a picture with a kiss for each of them but that's it.
The story reminded me of Akuma no Riddle and I liked it. The characters were also great (especially Hikari; I love this guy! And Kaori). Would recommend it.
Doki Doki Literature Club
Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy. I know the game tells you that it's a secret horror VN, also some friends of mine talked about how this game is nightmare-stuff. Still I didn't expect anything like that... I've may never read any VN that shocking like Doki Doki.
I already enjoyed the game without the disturbing parts. The music was nice, I loved the art and also the characters (especially Monika :P). I already expected how and when the disturbing part would come but the game made it so well that it creeped me out anyway. After that I only expected the worst.
I still can't believe that this is for free. Not only that it's a cool story but it also lets you do quite cool stuff. Somehow the story itself remembered me of Pony Island for being that unexpected, then at some point I thought about Undertale (because of the files & many secrets). Act 2 could've been a bit longer imo. Anyway I really, really, really enjoyed this game.
The Nonary Games / 999
I played 999 some years ago for the first time and right after I played Virtues Last Reward which is the sequel to 999. So in VLR you're able to switch to every timeline to receive new endings with new gathered information found in another timeline and so on. In 999 this flow chart was missed, which forced you to play the game for each ending all over. and over. and over again. So as you might can already imagine I wasn't quite amused by this. There also never was the option to skip through all the conversations (remember: the Zero Escape games are Visual Novels so there are a LOT of conversations) and to complete the whole game it took far longer than it should have.
Luckily those times are over now! As The Nonary Games came to Steam they finally added the option to skip read text and added a flow chart to switch wherever you want to go to repeat rooms and change some choices. Not too hard to guess that this time I had quite more fun with it and can finally hype it as everyone else does.
999 has an incredible good story, awesome characters and many little stories told which all come together in the end. To achieve every ending is a lot easier with the flow chart, which even shows you now which 'ways to go' to receive every six endings. When I think back to the DS version I often couldn't figure out how to get another ending (and with every try forced to replay the whole game) I prefered to just search for the solution online.
Then there was the last puzzle. I guess we all know what to do if we saw a puzzle like this, because it's very famous. So as I played it on DS, hours after hours spent to finally get to the true ending, a lot more hours spent reading the text until the last puzzle finally pops up, I was so annoyed by everything that this should be the final challenge. And of course I had to read even more text, which explains every damn detail how the puzzle works (which like I said we probably all know already). The fun thing back there was that I stopped my time in real life to see how fast I could make it. Didn't even need the half of the time giving ingame.
Sooo I was eager how fast I can get it solved this time in The Nonary Games. But surprisingly the last puzzle was changed out completely with a complete new puzzle I have never seen before with random numbers and letters and you get right away without any explanation how this thing might works. I'm very positively surprised how well they remade 999. They improved every flaw and created an old masterpiece shining bright new.
I'm glad I was able to replay it! Now I'm even more curious how they improved VLR and I will check this out really soon! (but not until I have finished at least two more fanarts of Santa >w<)

About Doki Doki Literature Club - many people remark that the initial standard VN stuff drags too long, and it’s often too boring to get past, especially for non VN players. I really liked Pony Island, so I would like to know how much fun stuff there is later on in proportion to the initial part?
There are 3 Acts. Act 1 is therefore the initial part. Act 2 and 3 combined should be as long as Act 1 iirc. I needed for Act 1 about two hours and compared to HLTB it takes 7 hours for 100%, meaning every secret discovered and messing around. So if you have fun with those it’s definately longer than the initial part, else it’s 50:50 I guess.
