Thyreos

October Debrief

My Skyrim project is still underway. I haven't been posting but I've actually been playing more rather than less.

Thyreos spent two weeks smithing and today is the day he should head out on the next leg of his adventure. So I'm hoping to get to that ... but I'm a self-confessed alt- and mod-aholic... I've been playing a rogue/archer with a number of new or new-to-me mods.

Immersive Detection & Lighting
Replacement for an essential but buggy mod: Immersive NPC in the Dark
Shadow Toggle
Dynamic shadows for lanterns and candlelight! Finally!
Scoped Bows
Realistic? I dunno, but it's more immersive than a UI crosshair.
True 3D Sound for Headphones
This. is. amazing. The ENB of audio. Especially awesome for a stealthy character with UI indicators removed.

So, I completed zero games again this month. I added two. I won Please, Don't Touch Anything in a public GA, and was gifted Zack Zero by a friend. Thank you, friend :)

EvilBlackSheep

You might not have completed any game, but your skyrim saga is GREAT ;) Can’t wait to read more of it :)

Scoped Bows: Realistic?

More like futuristic? … I mean, some Dwemer could probably have put together the fine mechanics needed to adjust a scope like that, but … even then they wouldn’t help with shooting a bow too much. Using the tip of the arrow as “crosshair” is just as good as any of those scopes – those are really “only” useful if you know the distance to target beforehand and can adjust them accordingly. If you don’t, shooting “blank” (German term for “without scope”, no idea what it could be in English) works just as well – it’s mostly about experience, holding the bow right and grabbing the string at the right point.
Source: I own a recurve bow. I’m neither an expert nor a medieval archer though.

I’m not even sure how scopes work in real-life. Googling, it looks like there is a series of dots beginning in the center and moving downward that you would use depending on range of the target. In a game though, everything flattens out beyond a certain distance and it’s really difficult to tell range. I find myself using other cues like nearby geometry and shifting left and right to try to get a sense of how far away something is. With the mod, I wind up using bows the same way I do with just the UI crosshair - target the enemy, then position the UI crosshair or the center of the scope some amount above the target depending on how far away I’m guessing the target is. Here’s an old video using an older version of the scoped bows mod showing a shot I impressed myself with :)

Downward Concept

Zack Zero is the most exciting addition? Almost made me second guess myself, because I removed it from my account. :D
