July’s Stats
aka. Another victory for the Backlog of Doom
I got extremely lucky at the beginning of this month and won a lot, both on SG and outside SG. I also got a few games given to me by friends, and managed to swap some extra keys for games I wanted to play. And of course I’m guilty, I activated some keys and bought a bundle. So overall, the backlog keep expanding.
On the plus side, I had some time to play (according to TrueAchievements I’ve been playing every single day this month except July 1st which is the evening I came back from holidays) and did complete a few games, including some that were added to my backlog this month. My only mistake was that some of the games I picked from the monthly theme were longer than I anticipated, and I didn’t wanna give them up until completed (especially Lyne and Strata).
Also one of those games I was given is so bad I’m considering moving it directly to the won’t play list after trying it for like 10 minutes. (It was given to me as part of a “dare” game with friends where we all had to activate a random key blindly and give it a try). The only reason I haven’t discarded it yet is that it has cards. That says it all. Any of you ever in that situation, and if yes do you even count it added to your backlog at all?

DETOUR
Well, if you don’t have a column for abandoned/discarded in your stats, you probably shouldn’t count them as backlog+ either? … I’d consider them part of the backlog when I get them, but at the moment I mark them “won’t play” they are effectively removed from the backlog again, aren’t they?
I have 8 won’t plays and 6 of those I tried for less than 10 minutes (if at all). I don’t consider them part of my backlog anymore. 4 of them I even won on SG and I’d feel bad for not playing them if they weren’t that awful. (Nux and Seeders are horribly bad, and Hector … I really tried to give that one a chance, but it’s just so stupidly aimless and the mechanics are really annoying. Well Prompt I might reconsider at some time, that game wanted me to manually install a JRE and that just pissed me off – I don’t think I’ll ever care to do that for that game specifically.)
The fuck install JRE for a game? No way i’d do it either.
I just really need to take some time to sort my list of games and move the ones that i know i won’t play to my ‘won’t play’ list, but yeah when they’re gifts I’m always feeling a little bad for doing so (I already have guilty feelings with the games currently in my won’t play list, as most of them are “double” entries in my steam library for when they gave the remastered version for free but as a separate entry) . But at the same time, no way i’m playing again those awful games. Sometimes they’re so bad that 10 min is definitely enough to know you’ll never touch them again).
I like Doom, it was a fun experience for me :D
Also you have got to send me some of that luck winning games on SG. The wheel of fortune always seems to spin right over me.
Haha :D
And sure I don’t mind sharing the luck. It’s overall negative when i look at my statistics tho, be aware of it.
I have some games that I’m pretty sure I won’t (or can’t) finish, but I keep them categorized as unfinished. I don’t like that condemning red portion of the ring that is the “won’t play” category. :/ But I’ll have to accept the fact at some point that there will be games too horrible to finish.
It is possible to request removal of a game from your Steam library, but that would be an extreme way to clear one’s backlog. :D
Yeah I know what you mean, it’s where i’m on the fence. And removing it is not always an option, as for most of the games in my won’t play I can’t remove them (and it’s a shame they’re there) because they’re the “old” version of games that then have given out a remastered version as a separate entry in your steam library. Those make a mess.
Yeah, that’s true. I suppose the solution with remastered versions is to mark both copies as beaten even if you’ve finished one version of it and have no intention to play the other one. You can say you’ve beaten the game at least once, and usually the remastered versions don’t have a difference to original in terms of main story/content.
I have a few games that I’ve labeled as beaten, but I’ve only finished them on PS3. I apply the same idea, I’ve beaten the game at least once although it doesn’t look like that in my Steam library. :)
If I own a game I consider it part of the backlog. :s
It’s what I do too. I’m just not sure what is happening when I’ll move it to “won’t play” list as I don’t consider it beaten either.
“Won’t play” tends to either been dead multiplayers, broken games or games I’ve tried and just won’t play. I don’t see any problem with throwing out a game that just isn’t worth your time. :s
