June update
Last month I’ve played way too many games (mostly short ones) and couldn’t find the motivation to talk about them all - which kind of bothers me because some of them were really worth talking about… The same thing is happening this month, so here is a small update!
Journal
"What's written on the pages of my journal is not a chronicle of my life. None of these moments really happened like this. But this is how I remember them, now."
I wanted to put a screenshot here, but the picture is kind of a spoiler, and I mainly wanted to show you what was written on it, so :
“What’s written on the pages of my journal is not a chronicle of my life. None of these moments really happened like this. But this is how I remember them, now.”
I’ve studied literature, and I wish this little sentence and the whole game were discussed in class. It’s hard to take distance from someone telling you a story/his or her life and well anything actually… Here you can experience that distance, really feel it, be frustrated because of it, you can “get it”.
I could go on for quite some time on Journal… I’ve started playing it afer Pearadise left a comment on my May Report post, she got me really curious and I left my impressions just after playing the game (a few minutes after finishing it actually). It’s confused and with a lot of spoilers. I was not feeling well just because of those few drawings and words.
Here it is, be careful though, if you haven’t played it, reading my babblings will ruin the experience for you
Beware spoilers! Here are some words exchanged with Batman about Her Story
Thirty Flights of Loving
You feel like you're the only person in the world who's awake, accompanied by Anita and Borges.
I loved this one! It is so well-made and the game includes dev commentary which is great. Really enjoyed to hear how the “floating dancers” (screenshot below!) came to life!
I was pissed off after reading steam reviews…
Florilège of shitty things people said :
“At one point the commentary explained how the rapid scene shifting is meant to be deliberately confusing. Well, congratulations, you succeeded at making an awful game.”
“It feels like the back-of-the-book summary of a game, not something that should cost money.”
“Is this even a game?”
“The “developer” should go back eating their boogers on the playground, and stop stealing money for what is essentially a sad tech demo from 1999. It’s puke.”
And, the best one: “The only fools that praise this game are tweens that masturbate to minecraft.”
There’s some truth in there, the game is short, it’s confusing but as much as a movie messing up with chronology - it’s nothing impossible to grasp. And as far as the “it’s not even a game” goes… well that’s the beauty of video games! Some are telling you stories, some are making you kill stuff
and what is it about money every freaking time a game doesn’t last 50 hours…
Emily is away too
Emily, who is Emily? My mother would say she's everyone. Every girl, every boy, every person that anyone has ever loved...
I really love Emily is away and when I saw this one on HB I didn’t really consider not buying it. I’m glad I did, it was great! But… really similar to Emily is away. Emily (another Emily) is still here, Sigur Ros too, promotion for other games… All that makes Emily is away so good is still here but better (the discussions about your profile pictures are way more fun), yet the story is different. It has everything to be at least as good as the 1st game, but then for me it wasn’t. I enjoyed it, really, but the “magic” had already happened I suppose…
It looks like an early version of Everything.
With an awesome thing you can’t do in Everything : RAINING BLOOD
And - as with Everything - I don’t have a freaking clue how to tell what I thought of this, so i’ll just go with “doubleplusgood”
This game is so beautiful, and damn…. the music!
Thanks uguleley for bringing this game to my attention!
That’s it!
It’s a Youtube link to Slayer! I was thinking of that when I clicked it. Nice.
Wow, I didn’t know they had a clip with a cat in it. I never watch them but still. I know almost all the songs so it’s nice to see some new things :D
Anyway, Slayer blood related song right back at ya.
Never saw this one! It’s sooo good!
Another one!
Also Disciple
Man I wish I could have seen them live like that. Oh well :( Least I can do is wear my Slayer shirt tomorrow.
Nice work there :)
But… what are they saying to each other? I’m not good at lip reading in German… English is no better I guess :]
Thx ;)
He says “Donna?” and she says “Doctor?!”
Funnily enough, it was this group and an older monthly theme that got me to try Botanicula. :) Everyone should have a bit more YOUHOU in their life!
Congrats on beating all those games! Her Story was one of my favorite games this year. I’m still a bit confused about the story, but as a big fan of the detective genre, it was awesome. I really disliked Emily was away, mostly because of the Emily character. She is like the stereotypical girl friend who friendzone guys just in case.
Looks like you’re working your way through some of my favs from times past. Botanicula was one of the first games I finished when I started playing on PC again and it’s still one of my favourites, everything is so well put together, and the soundtrack has been in my library for years.
30 flights of loving I played a DRM-free version of years ago. I enjoyed it and the freeware prequel, gravity bone. I do wish it was a bit longer, but I guess it’s meant to be experience as Art more than anything else. I want to play quadrilateral cowboy one day as well.
Mountain was interesting, not as something you play so much as you just leave it running and check on it every now and then. I love the deep thoughts it comes out with sometimes.
And of course ‘her story’ we discussed. Interesting choices all round, I might need to check out emily is away and its sequel.
Quadrilateral Cowboy seems interesting! Never heard of it, thx!
Yeah, I really enjoyed Mountain partly because you can let it run, watch it, slowly fall asleep…
If you got the chance, please check Emily is away before Emily is away too. Both are good and you can play them in any order as they’re two different stories… But the first one got something more…
You know, I played Journal 2,5 years ago, so I don’t really remember that much…I enjoyed it, I think? Wow, that post of yours about the game is really raw…you really felt that game! You should send it to the devs, they’d probably feel really proud even if you didn’t necessarily LIKE the way it made you feel.
I never played 30 Flights of Loving I just couldn’t get past the artstyle… :(
I didn’t know there was a sequel to Emily is away. I haven’t played either one, but the first one is at the bottom of my “wishlist” where I track free games I want to play.
I wanted to play Mountain before they added a ton of achievements that I’ll never get. I’m not sure I can even farm the cards without accidentally triggering one. I should just delete the game from my library.
Botanicula was fantastic…I liked it even more than Machinarium.
That game hit me pretty hard, yes.
Don’t know why recently I’ve become way more sensitive (might not be the right word) to games, movies, books… While watching the episode of Black Mirror “White Christmas” I had a small panic attack and just after playing Journal I was such a mess… but this new “thing” has a good side, Botanicula felt so nice! Finished it yesterday evening, I’m still happy about it, yelling “youhou” every minute
