180 PERFECT GAMES AND 94% ACHIEVEMENT COMPLETION REACHED!
Hello everyone. Since my last update on BLAEO I’ve reached some nice milestones I had set for myself. I reached 180 perfect games out of 239 games with achievements. I will never be able to 100% all my games with achievements but I didn’t believe that I’d get this far. Speaking of achievements, I came across some topics on SG about what the “true meaning” of achievements is, if there is one. I just wanted to state that seeing those achievements and perfect games count and high completion rate on my profile make me feel better. It is definitely not for showing off or comparing myself to other achievement hunters. It’s for me and me alone. There are more personal reasons for why this makes me feel better than usual but as I said, they are “personal” reasons :) Feel free to weigh in on this topic if you wish, I’m curious to hear what you think about it.
I also don’t know which game I should focus on next. I currently have 3 options:
As you can see I already started Alekhine’s Gun. I will definitely complete it at some point but what draws me away from it is how uncreative it is in terms of assassinations. In order to get Ghost ranking at the end of the mission, you can’t be seen, you can’t do any take-downs (including non-lethal) therefore can’t use any disguises unless you find one laying around somewhere, can’t be heard and so on. All of this is awesome for me, but the fact that you need to find that one special accidental kill for Ghost ranking bonus alienates me. Each target only has only one accidental kill option. Dreamfall Chapters is a very long game for completionists, it’s supposed to be around 50-60 hours or so and this is why I still haven’t played it despite being very excited about the game. Edna & Harvey: The Breakout is said to have a game breaking bug in the English version and that you have to download a 3rd party patch to progress, I think this is a pretty good reason why I have 2nd thoughts about it but I also played the first game and loved it so much therefore I really want to play it. Bottom line is, I have strong urges to play all these 3 games yet also have reasons to stay away from them. Can anyone who has played these games tell me more about them please, especially about Dreamfall Chapters?
Below in the tabs you can check out what I’ve been busy with since my last update. I’ve completed a lot of games so I won’t talk about all of them; however, if you happen to have any questions about a game I didn’t mention (or mentioned but you want more information) please don’t hesitate to ask. I read everything and reply to everyone :)
Happy backlogging everyone, I'm looking forward to reading your updates :)
HIGHLIGHTS
OTHER COMPLETIONS
The Cat Lady: First of all I'd like to thank my friend for gifting me this game <3 The Cat Lady is quite a dark psychological horror game with a lot of gore about a very depressed middle aged woman who attempted suicide. Seeing how well the developers tackled it, I quickly became completely obsessed with this game and all of the characters. I can safely say that this is among my most favourite games of all time. The Cat Lady also boasts a magnificent soundtrack alongside impeccable voice acting. Furthermore achievements are not challenging to get at all. All that being said, gameplay takes some getting used to.
Downfall: My friend Team Backlog strikes again, thank you <3! Downfall is the sequel to The Cat Lady but also a remake of the original Downfall game which is free to play right now. Unfortunately I haven't played the original game yet but I installed it and played the first 10 minutes so I won't be able to compare these two games. Downfall tackles the story of Joe and Ivy Davis, a married couple with very serious problems. Ivy is dealing with eating disorders (anorexia in original, bulimia in remake) whereas Joe has schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder. Suffice it to say that this is another very dark game but tackles these issues exceptionally well. Downfall has one of the best soundtracks I've heard (I'm listening to Countdown as we speak and I listened to the golden ending song on loop for hours on end) but unfortunately the voice acting is not as impressive as The Cat Lady. To get 100% achievements you need 2 full playthroughs without any mistakes regarding prerequisites for golden/downfall endings, the game has a total of 3 endings.
Dungeons 2: Warcraft 3 is my top favourite game of all time. Dungeon Keeper is my 2nd favourite game of all time. I just love these games so much that I can't even describe it in words. Dungeons 2 mixes the gameplay of these 2 games. You are playing as the "prime evil" or the "ultimate evil" whose sole purpose is to kill good guys and bring death and destruction to every cute thing including bunnies and ponies. When you are in underground; you are creating your dungeon, training your army, upgrading your units and so on. In here game plays like Dungeon Keeper. There is also a mechanic called "Overworld". When you instruct your army to get out of the underground, the game plays pretty much exactly like Warcraft 3. Dungeons 2 breaks the 4th wall a lot and narrator doesn't take the game very seriously. You are constantly mocked and there is a lot of sarcasm. This was off putting for me because I wanted the game to be serious and sinister. The narrator's voice in Dungeon Keeper was chilling to the bone and it added a lot to the atmosphere and context. Dungeons 2 can be funny though because it's filled with references to Warcraft and Game of Thrones. What I didn't like about Dungeons 2 is how slow the gameplay is. It takes ages for your dungeon to get up and running because your workers are painfully slow even when they are fully upgraded. The game is rather easy to 100% if you have mild RTS experience and DLCs aren't included in achievements. I do want to buy the DLCs one day though because despite my criticism, I really enjoyed the game.
Edna & Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes: For the life of me I do not know why Deponia is Daedalic's most well-known game. Throw that in the trash and play Edna & Harvey, puzzles are MUCH better, humour actually exists and the game is quite funny! I disliked the protagonist at first but if you ever play the game I strongly recommend "Contradict" ending, it was a big laugh out loud moment for me :) Achievements were kinda annoying though but still simple to get, most of them are "do this 20 times", "do that 15 times", "do this 99 times" and so on.
Machinarium: Machinarium is my most favourite point and click adventure game of all time. I also think it has one of the best OSTs if not the best (The Cat Lady and Downfall would also share that spot). I played it outside of Steam but replayed it on Steam once I realised that achievements were added. In order to earn achievements you need to opt for beta as they are currently impossible to unlock on live version. Achievements are completely story related and none of them are missable. Good luck with that tic-tac-toe minigame though, it's definitely the worst :P
The Cat Lady (1-4) / Downfall (5-8)

Dungeons 2</p></center>
Thank you for the wonderful update, Lenor! The tabs and colors are very nice. I should probably spruce up my updates a bit. :)
I'm surprised to hear you say achievements are very easy to get in *The Cat Lady*. That was not the impression I got. I played (but didn't finish) the game on GoG, though, so I guess I don't have to worry about it.
I don't like when games add achievements after I've already played them! I have to move *Machinarium* from Completed to Beaten. I guess I could solve that by only classifying achievement games as Completed, but I don't want to do that. If I spend 50-plus hours to get 100% in LEGO Harry Potter, I most certainly want to consider it Completed! =) The game itself was great back when I played it, but I generally don't like to replay games.
In *New Eyes*, it looks like a lot of those achievements wouldn't come naturally and that a second play-through with a guide would be necessary. It seems pointless, though that's exactly what I'd do. :P
As for a next game to play, I've never played any of the three games, but I'd suggest Alekhine’s Gun, assuming you basically enjoyed the time you spent with it. Some of the reviews were pretty unflattering though. And maybe Skanda above gives hope that *The Breakout* isn't broken?
How did you like the Hero of the Kingdom games? I've only played the first-- how does the second compare? It seems to be a *bit* more involved, but still quite casual?
Did you use the script for the Jackolopes achievement in *Deponia Doomsday*? :) What an annoying achievement.
We've talked about achievements and completionism a bit, but suffice it to say that on the whole, while some games have had achievements that made me enjoy the game more or pushed me to want to get them (most notably Remember Me), I'd enjoy most games more if I weren't worried about achievements, having to replay them with a guide, or worse, reading the guide *before* playing because I didn't want to replay the game. Grr. The real solution is not to care about completion percentage, etc., but I haven't been able to do that yet. :( There are some perfectly good games I'd like to play or at least try, but I don't because I know I'll never get many achievements. I wish I could permanently set my achievements to 0% and be done with them.
Thank you :)
I wanted to play Machinarium again so newly added achievements were a nice motivation. I forgot how annoying the tic-tac-toe mini game was though.
I agree about replaying games, I hate doing that myself so unless the game has different endings I tend to check an achievement guide prior to playing it. I normally hate spoilers but I don’t mind being spoiled while reading up on the guide because I really don’t wanna miss anything once I start playing. I don’t see a reason to replay games like point and click for example and Daedalic put some annoying achievements about replaying games in different modes in some of their games before. Although in games like Downfall and The Cat Lady there are 3 endings so I welcome the replayability :)
I don’t care about the reviews. There are people saying that Alekhine’s Gun is the worst game they have ever played on Steam. How can I take that person seriously? They obviously haven’t played enough games ;) I wish the game was better than its predecessors Death to Spies though. Both Death to Spies games were amazing and sadly Alekhine’s Gun didn’t improve upon them. Yes after Skanda’s reply I’m more hopeful about The Breakout.
I loved the Hero of the Kingdom games and as far as the story goes the 2nd game is much better in my opinion. There are just so many hilarious moments. I read that they are making Hero of the Kingdom III and I’m really excited about it :D I hope the story will be even more positively outrageous than the 2nd :P
I tried to do the achievement myself but after about 30 minutes I lost track of where I was, reading about manual tries failing on Steam forums did not help the matter either. Yes I used the script and watched the whole thing happen in shock. That achievement is absolutely stupid.
I wish we could disable achievements from certain games. Similar to disabling Steam Overlay. Once you disable achievements in a game, that game will not give you any achievements even if you meet the requirements for them. How I wish this feature existed or the feature to remove achievements after deleting/refunding the game. >.<
Your reply has prompted me to add "p" tags throughout my posts. ;)
I don't even remember the tic-tac-toe minigame...I must have repressed the memory.
Ah yes...Drogglejug...the reason I remain 18/19 on that one (since they fixed the bug where you could load a save before the end and switch to Drogglejug mode).
Hmm, hilarious moments and outrageous? I don't remember the first one being like that...now I'm more intrigued to play the second.
ZOMG your suggestions are fantantastic! Disable achievements on a game-by-game basis. Lord Gaben, please make it happen!
I don’t even remember the tic-tac-toe minigame…I must have repressed the memory.
Same here, I had completely forgotten it. I started cursing as soon as I got to that stage :D After 50 or so retries I almost gave up :P
:( I had no idea they fixed that achievement. Do you know when it was fixed? I can check my achievement date cause I did reload a save to get that one. It took multiple tries though and I was almost ready to actually play the game in that mode after so many failures.
It might not be hilarious or outrageous to someone else I suppose. But so many things are happening in the story which made me laugh a lot. I don’t wanna say anything for fear of spoilers :P
I finished the game in February 2015 so that should be when I tried to get Drogglejug.
But I just looked again and there seems to be a downloadable save file out there that is helping people get the achievement.
Not sure if it’s worth those lengths to me to get 19/19…although I suppose getting it to work is an “achievement” in itself. :P
Droggeljug Unlocked 21 Feb, 2016 @ 1:27pm, this is when I unlocked it so it was after the patch which means it’s doable.
I used a downloadable save, you’re probably talking about the same save I used. It works but I remember having to do certain things like not skipping dialogues or cutscenes at all and possibly watching the entirety of the credits too. But it’s been a while so I really don’t remember properly, all I know is that I unlocked it with a save I downloaded but it did take multiple tries.
:47_thumb_up:
Very impressive stats! Don’t feel like typing too much right now, but I read your post :)
The Cat Lady and Downfall are some of my favorite games.
but I read your post :)
Thanks :P
The Cat Lady and Downfall are some of my favorite games.
Fully agreed.
Wow, big congrats on your completed games & completion rate!
Some neat looking games you’ve completed, too. How were Hero of the Kingdom 1 and 2? Got those in my library, still somewhat unsure if I would enjoy them or not :/
As for your little dilemma, I’d say stick with Alekhine’s Gun. Then you could play two or three shorter games to take a bit of a break, and then start Dreamfall chapters. That’s what I think I would do ;)
Thank you :)
I really enjoyed Hero of the Kingdom. Get ready for a lot of clicking though and it’s like a hidden object game, just not the Artifex Mundi type. The only thing I don’t like about Hero of the Kingdom games is that you need to do a lot of bartering to get enough gold to be able to progress. But I really enjoyed the game; music is nice, story is fun, game also looks cute in my opinion.
Just don’t take the game seriously. For example I mocked the hell out of being able to put people in my inventory (it was particularly funny when I had to put someone’s wife into my inventory cause she was lost and her husband asked me to bring her back) and carry them around to complete quests :D I found the story of the 2nd game to be a lot better than the first game. It’s a nice fun casual game in my opinion.
I still haven’t decided what to do, I’ll just end up playing what feels right at that moment. All of these games are installed, which means I fully intend on focusing on these currently so I guess the only thing that matters is what order I play them in :P
Of the 3, I’ve only played Dreamfall Chapters. 100%ed it in 42 hours, around 2 playthroughs. I liked the game but I remember getting annoyed because the characters moved very slowly. It took some time to get from one point to another. I also remember getting lost a few times because the game doesn’t have a map/minimap. It kinda got annoying when I got to the part where they closed off parts of the city. Then there’s a number of unskippable cutscenes and sequences, if I remember correctly. Don’t get me wrong… There were annoyances but I still liked the game. :p
Oh, and if you’ve played The Longest Journey… April Ryan makes an appearance near the end of Dreamfall Chapters.
Not having a map is troublesome for me as my sense of direction wouldn’t save me if my life depended on it. Is the city too big?
Thanks a lot for your input :)
It’s a lot smaller compared to Novigrad but you can still get lost. It has those “you are here” type of maps but it was still a bit confusing for someone with a terrible sense of direction (me), especially when I’ve kinda figured out how to get from one point to another using a certain route then that route was later blocked.
I can relate to the perfect games and completion rate making me feel better. And since I know that there a SAM user out there I also realize that they are mostly for myself and that is okay. Although I know that they influence my behaviour on buying and approaching games some which are fair and some which are more worrysome -_-
- I check achievements before purchasing a game to know how hard they may be. Luckily I still refrain from reading guides before playing. Especially for puzzle games this seems rather stupid to do as it takes actually away from the actual game. I want first play the game as a game and completion comes after that although it means it takes me more time than other people as I often need at least two playthroughs (for example the Shadowrun games or Wasteland 2).
- I tend to not buy games which have unobtainable or broken achievements or no achievements at tall. I think as a customer this is fair. Developers have every right to do with their game what they want. But with the amount of good games out there I will buy and invest my time to those which cater to my interest. If I do “miss” a good game therefore it is okay. I don’t have time to play everything anway.
- I’m always hesitating to start new games because it will drop the completion rate again -_- This is quite troublesome. Although I have phases from time to time where I purposefully get just a single achievement in several games so I can relax and tackle them one after another.
All in all I like hunting achievements and I feel good getting those really difficult ones. Most time for stuff I would never do if not for that one icon (looking at you no death and not getting hit achievements >.<). Also in regard in those discussion (and also several steam forum threads): I don’t like people repeatingly telling me and others how pointless achievement hunting is. I know that myself. I also don’t tell people how pointless I think collecting games is. Well, I think it but I try to refrain from saying that in public ^^ After all we could discuss what is more pointless: Collecting something which had no other use to begin with (achievements) or collecting something which has an actual use which is then ignored (collecting games without playing them) ……
Although I know that they influence my behaviour on buying and approaching games some which are fair and some which are more worrysome
I know exactly what you mean. When I first started using Steam properly about 2 years ago I wasn’t an achievement hunter at all. I don’t know how or when things changed so suddenly for me. I didn’t become obsessed with them to the point of buying every single easy game with tons of achievements only to boost my numbers. My main goal was to complete everything the games that were already in my library had to offer.
But this has led to some problematic behavioural patterns when buying games. I’m already a very picky person and know exactly what genres I enjoy and what kind of features I look for in games. So if I set my eyes on a game, I know I will enjoy it. It’s just heartbreaking to check its achievements and realise that I can’t even get like 40% completion on it and decide to skip the game. Games like Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny are good examples, I love isometric RPG and grew up with games like Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age Origins but if I bought them I’d end up with 2-3 achievements which would be a disaster to my completion rate and I’d end up being depressed about it. This is not healthy behaviour for me. I actually had to “abandon” certain genres just cause of hard their achievements are for me. Turn based strategy for example. I personally don’t have that “I won’t buy this game if it doesn’t have achievements” attitude, though if I hear that achievements are broken it’s a definite no from me. Sadly sometimes it can be too late though, I had 100% completion on Mafia III but they added a DLC which comes with 2 glitched achievements and the developers haven’t even acknowledged the constant criticisms yet. Goodbye 100% forever…
I have a big love+hate relationship with achievements. While It would be liberating to not care about them I still can’t deny the overwhelming personal satisfaction that stems from tough completions.
I also don’t tell people how pointless I think collecting games is. Well, I think it but I try to refrain from saying that in public ^^
I think the exact same way. Achievements are optional but I don’t, for the life of me, understand the idea of buying a game to not play it >.< I can understand collecting old games with nostalgic value. But seeing people consider games like Dishonored 2 and Dark Souls III or any other game basically as a mere +1 to their library, farming them for cards but not playing them at all is a very alien concept to me.
Glad you liked Dungeons 2 :) Dungeons 3 has been announced and is already on my wishlist. You completed a bunch of games I still have waiting for me … and 94% is crazy, congrats on that!
I really loved the Warcraft references :) I started following the news of Dungeons 3 some time ago after finishing the 2nd game. Being able to play with any faction during campaign is a great change, if I buy it I’ll definitely go with Demons :) It’s also nice to see the additions of new rooms and units, Dungeons 2 was seriously lacking in that regard. Now they only need to add “possession” spell which allows you to directly control a unit from a first person perspective. From what I read so far, developers seem to be against this feature though :(
I read that A Game of Winter DLC for Dungeons 2 was really unbalanced especially after how easygoing the base game was. This is troublesome. I guess I’ll wait a long while until a lot of proper reviews are posted about Dungeons 3 to make sure it isn’t like the DLC. What did you think about that if you played it? Especially some missions are considered to be impossible and I read that some people changed stats in game files to boost the power of their units to keep up with the campaign. This sounds very scary :P
Thanks a lot for the achievement help by the way and the motivation to play this game. You deserve full credit for that :)
I’m glad I could help :)
I haven’t played the DLC, but I had read the same thing that it was much more difficult. I think they were trying to please the crowd that complained the base game was too easy. They added difficulty settings a while back, but all that I noticed that it did was create earlier and more frequent enemy spawns … so as long as you could survive the early “rushes” it wasn’t much different.
I like to read your posts by getting a drink and settling in because I know have a good read ahead of me. :)
Always entertaining to read when people get philosophical on achievements. While I’m not a completionist myself I really think your stance is probably one rooted in completionist/perfectionist nature that’s in all of us to some degree. I just don’t really extend mine to video games. You know, for sanity’s sake. I do find it crazy how some personalities like The Completionist do what they do, though.
Out of games offered I think I’d probably go for Dreamfall Chapters, although:
Dreamfall Chapters is a very long game for completionists, it’s supposed to be around 50-60 hours or so and this is why I still haven’t played it despite being very excited about the game.
How is that even possible for an adventure game? How many replays are we talking about here? I’m all for it just to see the continuation from Dreamfall.
I sadly can’t say anything about many of the games you’ve played as I, well, haven’t played them but I am interested in your opinion on Adam Wolfe seeing as I won it on SG recently and have no idea what to expect. So it’s a HOG game? You seem quite the expert on them so I’d like your take on it. Machinarium was my jam on Vita and I definitely agree it’s a great game although I’m not a fan of Adobe Air as an engine.
I like to read your posts by getting a drink and settling in because I know have a good read ahead of me. :)
Aww you flatter me, thank you so much :) I could actually write the world about The Cat Lady and Downfall, it’d fill up the entire feed. But I went with a stale/simple review instead of it being overly emotional. I truly think the same about your posts too, I love your reviews and every time I read them I get this image of you working as a writer for a magazine or a website etc.
I do have a perfectionist nature which is really hard to deal with because nothing is perfect, no matter how cliche this sounds. The importance I put on Steam achievements is a result of how much I lack them in real life.
I have no idea why Dreamfall Chapters is that long. I do know that it requires a minimum of 2 playthroughs because it has a lot of mutually exclusive achievements over the course of the game. For example in order to get one achievement in book 3, you need to make a different decision in book 1 otherwise you won’t get the opportunity to earn that achievement in book 3. So a simple reload won’t work. You really need to start over. S17tabris mentioned finishing it in 42 hours, HLTB shows 62 hours as “longest” recorded time for 100% and 50 hours as leisure. I’m a slow player so even though it shows 41.30 hours for completionists on HLTB, I know it’ll take me longer than that. I really do want to play it though despite not playing the previous games :P
Adam Wolfe is the best HoG I played, plain and simple. Although the gameplay leans a lot more towards hidden object puzzle adventure with an emphasis on puzzle adventure. There are only about 4-5 hidden object scenes across 4 episodes but they did a fresh take on them compared to the HoGs from developers like Artifex Mundi. So you will hardly have those traditional “here is a full list of items you need to find in this pile of mess”. They still exist but they are so few. The story is very intriguing even though it becomes weaker during the last episode. The length of the game is around 7-8 hours which is pretty awesome for a HoG as they’re usually 2-3 hours or 4 at most. Voice acting is really good too which is very rare for this genre :)
Right back at you. It’s great to have creative outlets such as this for my hobby stuff. Or maybe we just have too much free time on our hands. :D
Really? I was under the impression Chapters was somewhere in the area of Telltale’s title length but it’s actually that long? That sounds like quite a commitment but I guess it better be after waiting for it for so long considering how Dreamfall ended. Still, 50 hours leisure? I wasn’t aware I was signing up for a JRPG playthrough. Do tell about your experience if you go with it.
My experience with HOGs is basically nonexistent so it’s comforting to hear this one in particular seems to be so good. Production values high, huh? Thanks for breaking it down for me. ;)
I’ve only played Edna & Harvey (I even have a plush Harvey! :D) so I can only recommend that one. What I loved most about the game is that it has a line of monologue/dialogue written for -everything-. You know how in many point and clicks you get a generic “Nah, that won’t work.” response to every wrong move you make? There’s none of that in Edna & Harvey! Every single thing that you do (right) and wrong gets a unique response from the character. :) And if I remember correctly, you can get a bottle of ketchup at some point and then use it on many different surfaces, creating very…interesting scenes. :D And I didn’t encounter any game breaking bugs even though I played it in English.
(Also, I got 100% achievements in 8 hours, if that helps. :) )
Thank you so much for your review, it truly means a lot. You can click here for a fix for that bug I was talking about. I don’t really know exactly what the bug is but there are topics about it and someone even made a patch to fix it (it isn’t an official patch I believe) so hearing about this on forums and the achievement guide I checked referring to this kinda scared me off :(
I love it when there are different dialogues for wrong moves. Broken Age and Sam & Max also had that feature and you can hear a lot of funny dialogues because of it :) I want a plush Harvey too, he’s so cute! :D
