2023 Rundown

This year I 100% cleared 4 games with progress in a variety of other games too. I didn’t focus too hard on achievements this year and instead jumped around various games including a few which either didn’t have achievements or weren’t on the steam platform itself. RIP The Cycle: Frontier

According to 2023 steam year in review I unlocked 380 achievements across 24 different games.

Ending the year with 7,134 total achievements and an average of 51% game completion rate.

Fantastic story-based coop focused game to play with a friend. No grindy achievements

Borderlands
Borderlands “Review”

Fun with friends. Only relatively few fairly grindy achievements near the end.

The Witcher Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine Review

There are a few grindy achievements, however if you’re playing to full clear side-quests and various activities most of them just come along the way.

Sanctum

Sanctum Map Pack 2 Review

There are some vague “secret” achievements which I recommend just looking up a guide for. If you do a run of this with friends and a single-player run for the difficulty related achievements most of them aren’t too bad.

2022 Rundown

With 2022 coming to a close I thought I would put up a small post reflecting on what was finished. This year I was able to 100% complete 18 (well, 17 actually but I’m not buying the DLC) different games with progress on a variety of games coming along slowly.

Technically the oldest game I finished would be Age of Empires 2 which I played well before the steam version but never actually played and finished all the single-player campaigns. 2014 is the year of my first achievements for the steam version, so it did take me some time to finish it. The longest running to get to the 100% completion for this year was Payday 1 though. My first achievement for that game was from 2013.

According to 2022 steam year in review I unlocked 1,227 achievements across 48 different games.

Adding up the hours according to steam the following took roughly 1,208.6 hours or 50 days of run-time to complete.

Reasonable difficulty achievements

Middle-earth™: Shadow of Mordor™
Middle-earth™: Shadow of Mordor™ Review

Most of the achievements are well designed, some of them in particular are quite difficult

Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection

Some of the achievements are missable on a play-through, I followed a guide to avoid any possible pitfalls

Streets of Rogue
Streets of Rogue Review

Fantastically fun and chaotic game. Played with friends, the achievements did not feel grindy.

Age of Empires II
Age of Empires 2 “Review”
Age of Empires 2 DLC The Forgotten Review

The achievements in Age of Empires 2 are the worst. Extremely grindy and also a bunch are locked behind DLC. A good chunk of the achievements have speedy ways in single-player etc but ultimately almost all of the achievements for AOE2 are badly designed.

Total War: NAPOLEON – Definitive Edition
Total War: NAPOLEON – Definitive Edition Review

I enjoy the Total War series and as such the achievements did not feel grindy. There are, however, multiplayer-only achievements which require coordinating with other players which can be a bit of a nuisance.

Took me a few tries on the highest difficulty but otherwise didn’t feel grindy

PAYDAY™ The Heist
PAYDAY™ The Heist Review

Payday has a high difficulty-level ceiling. The high difficulty requirement related achievements are quite difficult. I was able to get them in a mix of single-player abusing the bots infinite ammo and reviving them over and over in specific positions in maps and also some in multiplayer.

Okami HD
Okami HD Review

If you enjoy JRPG style games then Okami won’t feel like a grind for the achievements. If you don’t like JRPGS they will surely feel like a grind

Shank 2
Shank 2 Review
Won from steamgifts

The single-player achievements took me a little while to get through on Shank 2, especially because some of the game scenes drop the frame rate really low on my machine. The co-op mode was by far the most difficult challenge to get through though. That took many, many attempts both in single player and online with a friend.

Tropico 4
Tropico 4 Review

Requires one DLC to 100%, “Modern Times”. The gameplay could begin to feel tedious if trying to push for 100% but going at a casual sort of pace it didn’t feel too grindy to me.

Sanctum 2
Sanctum 2 Review

I did the majority of the most difficult achievements in singleplayer. They are quite difficult but fortunately there are a few strategy guides to help push through.

ConflictCraft

Extremely simple and fundamentally broken game/asset flip. Non-grindy achievements but there was one achievement which I got by using 4 controllers and attempting to play a local game.

The lack of content in this game does make it feel like a bit of a drag towards the end of the achievement gathering. Not that bad when thinking of Age of Empires 2 though, shudder

I’m yet another person that has accumulated a large backlog thanks to rather generous valued bundles of the past.

I have been making steady progress on slowly discovering all my various hidden gems plus the occasional lump of coal and generally been having a good time of it. I like to get my games to 100% at which time I’ll write up a review and if the game doesn’t have a split-screen mode I set them as invisible in my library to help reduce the clutter and keep focused on moving on.

During the never-finished mission of trying to play unfinished games to 100% I occasionally come across a Genre I normally don’t specifically choose to play. Often times such encounters is such a breath of fresh air! I highly reccomend at least occasionally trying to find a game that fits into a gameplay genre that you don’t often play and give it a whirl.
