anyone who doesn’t care for VN posts can just skip and wait for my monthly post >.>
Asphyxia is the second Ebi-Hime VN I’ve read and a contrast to the other more popular title I’ve read recently. (doki doki literature club) (ie the only two vn I’ve read in the past month)
And It deals with the topic of depression alot better.
Doki Doki is memed to hell and the comment section is full of stuff like “this game gave me depression”
when all things considered it wasn’t all that sad? Like, Fullstop its a good novel but on of the characters being forced to commit suicide randomly and another stabbing herself for the heck of it doesn’t really mean it was all that sad? especially as the game focused on the meta aspects of everything.
Asphyxia isn’t really “sad” either but Its writing the depression aspect a whole lot better kinda worrying that the first thing I think of is how relatable it was >.>
The self hatred and clingy neediness pushed up with not wanting to bother anyone or make anyone worry is alot stronger than the meme of rope girl swinging for 10hrs.
I’m jumping all over the place here but to compare it to the only other ebi VN I read (The way we all go) the writing is alot better. TWWAG felt like a fanfiction and while I read loads of them when I was young and stupid and while I have to say I actually like reading TWWAG the language is less…put together.
Because when you turn to Asphyxia you are met with endless floral language and beautifully sarcastic remarks tossed back and forth.
The writing is floral to the point where you would think in all honesty its entered that sorta unrealistic narcissistic sort of quasi sophisticated state you get the idea
and the only thing that prevents it from just coming off as pretentious is the fact that it actually feels realistic with how I know certain teenagers act >.> and how the students are into poetry and at a boarding school and still in that self reflective state.
and the only thing that prevents you from being annoyed/bored by that is the fact that the main character is actually really depressed and in a “drugs and alcohol” bad decisions and super realistic way of not dealing with stress instead of a angsty Hollywood depression.
esh anyways if you like visual novels this one is better than some/a bunch of trash thats been released on steam.
its also short and easy to 100%
would rec
I saw your screenshots of the game and I loved the art. I might pick this one up later.
It’s nice when a game tackles the theme of depression fairly well. I thought it was tackled really well at the beginning of Doki Doki literature club, when Natsuki was telling the protag that she had depression all her life. It of course didn’t last long before it turned into something else of a game, but regardless, thanks for recommending a vn that is more about that plot :)
yess I hope I didn’t spoil to much by endlessly screenshoting scenes.
I didn’t actually like the art looking in on it but it grew on me
No you didn’t spoil anything :)
I love the art! That’s what I like best in this one xD though I still haven’t started it because I don’t really like sad/depressing stuff much. But if it’s better than TWWAG then maybe I should consider reading it at some point. And I’m repeating myself but the art is really awesome!
I wouldn’t say it’s that sad unless you have something related to it.
It’s more like the main character is known as the person who always makes jokes about dying so people say stuff like “oh you took so long to get back I was worried you had hung yourself” and “oh I breafly considered it but was foiled by the lack of rope.”
Like I’ts not just a comedy or something but it’s alot less depressing then I think you’re making it out to be
Oh yeah you made it a lot more appealing to me, it’s just that generally I avoid such games until I know more. But since it’s a VN, knowing more usually ends up with myself getting spoiled haha.
But I like how you sell it and I’ve been more and more drawn to it so I’ll end up playing it at sometime soon I guess since I’m curious about it now (and I already bought it anyway so… xD).
Thank you for the detailed review, this game caught my eyes because of the art, it’s nice to know about the depression aspect. I want to play more visual novel in the future, will wishlist this game.
It’s defenitly better than alot of trash that’s released on steam.
And gets pretty cheap during sales
Would recommend \o/
I have so many VNs in my backlog that there’s no way I’m adding another one.
Go away vile tempter!
REPENT
the power of visual novels will win in the end
There’s a solution to this problem right? Just read your whole backlog before the new year.
Easy
I’ll even give you tuna as a reward when you do
But they’re too long
:lewd:
Asphyxia is a really really cute and good short vn. It deals with depression and it’s also yuri!!!
Also!!! The cover art is a reference to Millais’ Ophelia, and many backgrounds are there to remind you of other Pre-Raphaelite paintings (my true passion of mine).
When I played it, the first thing I said was “I wish this existed when I was a teenager” ‘cause it surely would have made more of an impact back then. But I am glad that ebi-hime’s games exist now, so today’s teenagers are blessed with good and well-done stories (with yuri themes).
I didn’t say anything about the yuri cause it wasn’t super strong :3
But yes ❤
Also each of the characters are based upon famous poets and it’s cool idk
I hate you, I have now purchased this xP Your real ploy is to get me to get farther behind on my ABCs, I KNOW IT!
<3
Omg now it’s downloading I hate you
