Monthly Backlog Report: March #001

Hey everyone!

It’s been a while since I did a monthly backlog report! Better said: almost an entire year passed since I last wrote something on this site…
March wasn’t particularly a productive month for me gaming-wise, however I did manage to finish some games!

Games I’ve Finished This Month:

5.8 hours

One of the greatest pieces of detective media, I've ever experienced!
Normally, I always try to stay away from saying such things, like 'the best, the greatest, etc.', simply because of my lack of experience, and my (generally) young age - I still have loads of games to finish, so I see no point in calling one the greatest.
However, with Beacon Pines, I simply can't use any different word - it is one of the greatest experiences I had, ever!

The core gameplay mechanic in itself is interesting enough to make this an enjoyable title, representing choices with words is a genius idea. This structure also makes possible, that you see every possibility in the story before finishing the actual narrative, in many branching games you need multiple playthroughs if you want to see each path.
The art style is also majestic, I couldn't take my eyes off the Deck!

I'll writing a more in-depth review about Beacon Pines in the upcoming days, but in a nutshell you already know how much I adore this game!

Half-Life 2

The Exit 8

1.1 hours
2 of 2 achievements

A really well made horror short. In the recent years, a new subgenre has started getting popular within horror games: anomaly spotter titles.
These games do exactly what they promise: similarly to Five Night's at Freddy's games, you are tasked with looking at CCTV cameras and reporting if you find something abnormal (e.g., an anomaly).
In Exit 8, this formula is projected into 3D, and it works surprisingly well!

The task in this game is more than simple: you need to get to the exit number 8 - to achieve this you need to complete 8 levels and decide whether there is an anomaly on the level or not. If your guess is right, you will progress. If not - you go back to the first level!
What makes this a bit hard in my eyes is that you don't exactly know what to look out for at the beginning. There are obvious anomalies that you will find without any problems, but others are much harder to uncover. I really enjoyed playing it, I think the playtime was completely on point.

Half-Life 2

Luna's Fishing Garden

2.5 hours
14 of 14 achievements

An amazing way to spend ~2.5 hours!
Luna's Fishing Garden is a real treat, if you are looking for a short & super chill experience. The name essentially gives away the two main tasks that you will do during the playtime: fishing and gardening :D !

The pixel art is also adorable, and paired with the soothing soundtrack this makes a perfect way to spend a Sunday evening :) !

How did you enjoy March? I personally really love that everything around me gets greener every single day. Prior to this year, I never really cared about flowers or nature itself, but now I get kinda sentimental each time I take a walk. I’m enjoying my university semester by far, but since I’ll have many exams in late April - early May, my next monthly report will probably feature fewer titles :) !
Thank you very much for reading my post!

Congratulations on your assassinations!! ᓚᘏᗢ
I loved Beacon Pines and I’m planning on getting Luna’s Fishing Garden as well as Exit 8 sometime this year!! If you like detective games, I highly suggest The Painscreek Killings, I just finished it this March and wrote about it on my post, but it was an absolutely lovely time.

Thank you very much!
Oh, this is a great recommendation—actually, I’ve played that a couple of months ago, but sadly, I couldn’t give it my full attention and dropped it eventually, but it sits right on my list ^^ !
Have you checked out the developer’s other game that came out a few months ago? IIRC it’s called Scene Investigators - it also looks like a great idea!
I really like games where you are essentially on your own, and you do not follow a simple set of tasks. From what I saw in the Painscreek Killings, this is exactly that type of experience :D
