Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration ⭐️⭐⭐⭐☆
Action Adventure37 hours playtime, 81 of 143 achievements (56%)
- nice story that's not based on "oh no I must save my crew" theme like in previous game
- collectibles that feel interesting and not boring to find
- nice and smooth controls in parkour sequences
- mostly bugless apart from some small collision problems
- works well on older PC (i5 4590 + R9 280X)
Cons:
- tombs are terribly easy and don't pose any challenge at all
- combat is enjoyable, but whole game is focused on it. So it feels more like FPS rather than adventure
- even when parkour is really well done, there are some parts that feels bad - I'm looking on you ice-axe that works like rocket grappling hook
- lack of boss battles (apart from one boss at the very end). I liked those small bosses in TR2013 that were bit more tactic and were introducing new combat mechanics
- DLCs are not really worth paying extra. Most of them are cosmetics that look ridiculous (like full plate armor in Siberian forest, where temps reach -20C), and there are only 2 story DLCs (1h long each)
Conclusion:
It's nice parkour / exploration game. It has good combat and collectibles that do fit into setting, so I didn't feel like I'm collecting feathers in Assassin't Creed. Story is more personal than in previous game, so I didn't feel like rookie savior of the world.
But at the same time tombs are super easy and rare, upgrading equipment feels grindy (thankfully there are no microtransactions that allow players to either grind for upgrades or pay and unlock them right away). DLC (and some base game) armors look ridiculous. Half of the Season Pass content is focused on multiplayer skins, bonuses and so like. Story DLC are short and not interesting.
I paid for it (kind of xD) ~8€ so I think it was money well spent. But I wouldn't pay much more. This game has Tomb in the title. And offer no logical/puzzle or tomb part at all.
- nice slasher game
- interesting weapons and glory kills
- various enemies
Cons:
- story is meh. But it's slasher and I didn't expect it to be any good
- bugs that forced me to replay sections, as scripts didn't fire up. So I was left on empty map without NPCs starting to talk with me etc.
- sadly enemy AI is not spot-on, and they can for example get stuck, looking at wall till we approach them
- completely corridor level design
Conclusion:
I have very vague knowledge about Warhammer universe, so most of the things that were happening in game were out of context. But apart from that it's nice slasher. Sadly there is not much more to say about this game. I will try later to play a bit in multiplayer.
- really nice fast paced shooter
- rune mechanic which allows to personalize gameplay a bit
- maps are semi-open, so it doesn't feel like corridor shooter
- bugless
- works well on older PC (i5 4590 + R9 280X)
Cons:
- problems with Steam Overlay
- only one checkpoint without auto save, so corrupted save can mean having to replay game
- ammo is overflowing the screen, so it doesn't give any kind of strategy approach
- boss fights are predictable and easy
- map controls could be made better
- ability to turn off gore etc for people that don't want to see swimming pools of blood
Conclusion:
I played in Doom 2003 and liked this horror atmosphere. And I thought this game will be similar. Thankfully I saw before playing that it's not horror game, but fast paced FPS. So I wasn't surprised / disappointed.
Apart from that it's nice fast paced shooter with fine plot. Nothing amazing though, just enough to justify slaughter. Many people say that music is spot-on... well I don't care much about music in games. So I can't say anything about it. But it surely wasn't not fit for this type of game. So it's fine?... I guess.
Multiplayer is nice and fast paced, level creator in MP mode is terrible and obviously created for console users. But downsides aren't big or important, so it's still really good game.
Side note
I have few games more to beat on Steam, but I will move now to play in games on Uplay and Origin. Right now I’m in the middle of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. And it’s the same like any other Ubisoft game… climb tower, uncover crapload of items to collect, maybe progress plot, close to none side missions. So I think I will skip AC:3 and Watch Dogs that I also get for free on Uplay. And focus on games I have on Origin thanks to Origin Access.
I’ve played Space Marine a few days ago and experienced no script issues whatsoever. Too bad the sequels are not going to happen and the story (as simplistic as it was) will never be finished :(
If you just beat game you surely remember this part when you’re starting to go on your own to the spire, you destroy few waves of enemies - with those portal making enemies on the sides and chaos marines in the middle, it’s also first place where rebels transform into 2 demons, it even has short cut-scene. And then need to go right to open doors. In that place after killing all enemies twice, this woman soldier didn’t start to talk… so doors I had to walk through didn’t want to open.
Don’t really know why, looks like some weird maybe specific bug.
I do agree it was really nice and simple game, especially parts with rocket backpack and hammer were fun ;D But they could at least have average enemy AI. Not that I run away, taking care of other enemy wave, and wave that appears in other part of level simply wait till I approach them from specific place. While my squad can still shoot them.
Nice games you have finished. I played Spacemarine a few years ago, I completely agree with your review.
Also huge kudos for (more or less) finishing your Steam backlog. Mighty impressive! I’m a bit jealous ;) Have fun with the other backlogs!
Thanks :D
I did remove like 70 games from my account, otherwise those stats would look worse D:
I also have 1 or 2 games that still wait to be added to account. But don’t tell anyone about it ;P As long as it’s not on my account, it’s not counted towards backlog :blobnervous:
Well if you didn’t plan on playing them, then there is no reason to have them in your account.
I think everyone has a hidden backlog somewhere ;) I have some unactivated keys from HumbleBundle for example…but only what’s on steam counts!
