December 2019 + January 2020 Progress

The post is finally here! I’m 1 month late but still, better late than never. This post got so large I had to make 3 tabs for the games I finished.

Shenmue. I heard this name many times over the last years. A revolutionary game with a record-breaking budget that paved the way for open-world games and created the term "QTE". I was always curious about it, wanted to see it for myself. When the PC port was announced, I wishlisted it without skipping a beat and eventually managed to snag a copy. I heard people comparing it to Yakuza (spoiler: it's not really similar to Yakuza), which made want to try it out even more, so I downloaded it, got some modding work done and I gotta say... that was an unique experience.

Shenmue is a very slow paced game. You spend most of the time walking around, asking people for clues until you find someone who knows something. In between of that there are QTE sequences and Virtua Fighter-style fights. If you don't feel like progressing through the story, you can always hit up the local arcade to play some games, do some gambling, buy capsule toys, visit/call certain characters, train your fighting skills somewhere quiet or just walk around the city. I liked how the game didn't hold my hand and yet didn't make it excruciatingly painful to figure out what to do next - all key details are noted down in the journal, and if you can't figure something out, you can always ask people around and they'll try to steer you in the right direction.

The story itself is great and gripping. The English voice acting is pretty bad though - I played with Japanese audio, since it sounded much better (at least to someone who doesn't know Japanese). There's also a lot of secret, easily missed scenes and dialogue - the only tip I can give without spoiling anything is that you shouldn't use fast travel in the first game.

Shenmue's strongest point is the huge amount of detail it has (especially considering that the games released in 1999 and 2001!). Most, if not all characters, even random strangers, have unique models and dialogue that changes depending on your current objective, and pretty much everyone in the first game has a background of some sort. I loved how I could open the drawers and cupboards to see what's inside of them, something that's not in many games, even modern games. You can pick up objects, rotate them around and peek inside bowls and vases.

As for the port, it's okay. It's capped at 30FPS, doesn't have performance issues, audio quality is worse than the OG console versions (fortunately it's nothing a mod can't fix), partial widescreen support (cutscenes will play at 4:3 aspect ratio, but there's a mod that removes the ratio lock, it's not perfect but it works well) and the graphics were slightly improved, since the game is no longer affected by some restrictions the Dreamcast had. There are a few extra graphical options too, like anti-aliasing, render scale and bloom.

Overall, this game may have been a slog gameplay-wise but I still enjoyed it. If you don't mind the slow pacing, love story-based games and want something immersive and unique, try this game and see if it clicks with you. If if does, you'll have lots of good times with it. Looking forward to Shenmue 3 now, however from what I heard it doesn't move the story forward much, which worries me.

To be honest, I didn't want to try this game. It's a spiritual successor to the Castlevania series, which I played a little before (the DS games in particular) but didn't like it. Not my cup of tea, I thought. When I got a free month of Origin Access, I saw that this game was recently added to it. I didn't hear much about it, some little bits here and there and it seemed good based on reviews on Steam, so I decided to try it. It turned out that the Origin version was broken. Since that was around Christmas (which meant it wouldn't be fixed any time soon) and I wasn't going to let my month expire, I decided to just get a pirated version instead and damn, how glad am I that I gave this game a chance.

This game was so fun, it made me wonder why I disliked the Castlevania series in the first place. It was challenging at first, but got super-easy at the end after I spent way too much time grinding and getting so ridiculously overpowered that the final boss was a total joke. I like how there's tons of different weapons, equipment and shards, each with different effects so you can fully customize your fighting style. The story's good, the enviroments looks nice and detailed and the music is just downright awesome. The only issues I had with this game is that the audio would sometimes crackle and the game would sometimes crash when reading books from a bookcase (fortunately, most of the bookcases are placed right outside save points, so you can save first, then go read the book to prevent any lost progress).

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a great game that I couldn't easily put down. It made me give the Castlevania series a second chance. From what I see, this game hasn't received all of its Kickstarter content yet, which means I'll most likely end up replaying this game sooner or later. Not that I'm complaining - I'd love to play it again. Highly recommended.

Whoooo boy, here we go again. Cook, Serve, Delicious! returns once again in this unexpected (even hinted by the title itself) sequel. After becoming the only survivor of the Teragon Supertower bombing and losing your restaurant yet again, you decide to serve food on the road while going around from one end of a post-apocalyptic version of America to another, accompanied by two robots, who drive and protect your foodtruck.

Gameplay has changed significantly since CSD2!!. Instead of serving customers as they come into your restaurant and having to deal with 2 rush hours each day, you now prepare food ahead of the time and serve it when you reach a stop. The new auto-serve button is very handy and satisfying to use. The campaign in this game is like a combination of CSD2!!'s CSD and C4H modes - there are still levels (routes divided into days) and medals like in C4H, but now you can make your own menus before each level. This is one of my favorite additions to the game, as now I can pick foods I like and also this gives me more control over the difficulty - casual players can use easier foods like brisket slices, dango or sopapillas just to barely meet the level requirements, while veterans can go all-in and use harder foods, like sushi, tamales, hamburgers or deluxe poutine for increased money and experience. Almost every level has a food filter to encourage you to use foods you haven't tried before. You can also upgrade your foodtruck, which gives you benefits such as more patience for SO foods, more holding stations or more max servings for HS foods.

The writing is still just as crazy and wacky as in CSD2!!. New Zealand and Australia are arguing about where pavlova originates from (with Australia saying they'll "visit" New Zealand if they don't give up), garden salads are made from veggies stolen from gardens of random people and the French citizens of Quebec created poutine just to spite their British oppressors, who had to learn French in order to buy it. There are actual cutscenes now, and your robot helpers are fully voice-acted, warning you of incoming hostile foodtrucks (you read that right!), approaching stops, cheering you on after each stop and having little convos every time you reach a new territory.

The graphics are still good enough to make it impossible to play without a snack within my reach. The game even says to not play it when you're hungry. Also oh man the soundtrack is FULL of absolute bops and bangers, I can barely restrain myself from dancing mid-days and the final stop music always gives that extra oomph to make you play at your best.

In it's current state, the game has around 20-25 hours of content - the dev plans to add 7 more territories (11 total), a new mode (?) called "Iron Cook Speedway", achievements, trinkets (used to customize your foodtruck interior) and many smaller improvements and balance changes. CSD3?!'s launch was very smooth too, unlike CSD2!!, which was bug-ridden and unfinished on release. The game is scheduled to leave Early Access in summer 2020.

Do I recommend this game? Hell yeah I do! It improves on CSD2 in pretty much every single way and also brings back the strategy of menu building, upgrades and sense of progression from CSD1. I can't wait until this game leaves Early Access.

 • I actually managed to complete Half-Life Opposing Force early February, so it’ll be included in the next month’s post.
 • Since my free Origin Access month is now over, I can finally put more focus on State of Decay.
 • My struggle continues in Gothic II, as the 4th chapter of the game begins and I visit the Colony once again to hunt down some dragons.
 • CSD3 will stay on my “Currently playing” list until at least it’s out of Early Access. I have completed everything the game has to offer so far, but there will be more levels added this month.

Next up:

 • I’ll start one more game this month, but I don’t know which one yet. I’m open for some suggestions.

Notes

Since a new year has begun, I’ve decided to make some changes in the posts I make, on my profile and in my library.

The biggest change is that I will no longer write reviews/notes for every game - it’s becoming increasingly difficult for me to write them. They’re the main reason why I keep delaying posts, it takes me a lot of time to write those reviews and because of this, I’ve decided that I’ll stick to 1 review per month, maybe 2 if I’m feeling good.
Since I won’t write reviews for each game anymore, I created my own rating system, ranging from 1 to 6 stars:

★★★★★★ - Masterpiece! One of my favorites. Equal to 10/10.
★★★★★ - Loved it! Maybe not perfect but still amazing. Equal to 9/10.
★★★★ - Really liked it! There were some nitpicks but nothing too major. Equal to 8/10.
★★★ - Liked it! Not a jaw dropper, but not that bad either. Equal to 7/10.
★★ - It was okay. Could’ve been better. Equal to 6/10.
★ - Not worth playing. Equal to 5/10 or lower.

Note that those ratings reflect my own enjoyment of the game. Some can receive a 1 star rating, despite being considered good by most people.
I’ve assigned ratings to every game I’ve beaten before. This will also help me keep track of which games I liked and which ones I didn’t.

I’ve spiced up my profile description a bit and added non-Steam backlogs to it. I’m pretty happy with the end result, it looks good!
I also cleaned up my “unfinished” list by moving some of the games back to the “never played” list - as I’m better off starting entirely new playthrough on some of those games.

PS. I just noticed I failed my 2019 goal of getting 200 completed games total. i blame it all on csd and yakuza >:(

ninglor03

Oh god, yes. I feel you. Sometimes I just can’t write reviews for games and than I feel bad. So I try to net feel bad but still do my weekly update even if that’s turning out boring, bc I basically don’t write anything but stats :D But that’s ok too. We will manage! \o/

I’ve noticed how I left the stars more and more behind. Basically bc I’m to stupid to get half stars. So I can’t rate a game with 2.5/5 stars. Now I write it and I suddenly can give out 2.5/5! \o/

How many did you beat in total? I bet you still did good - or at least you beat some big ones and that is in itself also very good :)

EDIT: I love State of Decay. Still gotta get back to that!

kubikill

Glad to hear I’m not the only one! I think an update without reviews is still better than no updates at all, so don’t worry too much about it :)

You can make ’s in posts by using and ’s by using . Oh and if you want whole stars, use or just copy a star from my post. If you want more icons you can check this site, almost all of the icons there will work on BLAEO.

So far it’s 185 games, including 5 games I’ve beaten on Origin. Yeah I played a lot of big games last year. Fallout 4, Tower Unite, Yakuza Kiwami 1 and 2, Shenmue I & II, Gothic II (which I’m just halfway through), The Talos Principle… And last year I only had 108 completed games. So it’s actually pretty good!

State of Decay is cool so far but there are just so many objectives that it’s hard to pick which ones to focus on. The fact that some of those have time limits doesn’t make things easier.

ninglor03

Yeah, that’s true :)

Thanks for the star-guide giggle
I had stars before I just at some point used numbers instead of them. Maybe I’ll go back at some point, but right now it’s numbers for me ;)

185 or even 190 sounds awesome! I didn’t manage to beat 100 games last year, so… you can be proud of it! Let’s try doing better this year. Or at least good enough to achieve our goals happy

Oh yes, I remember that being a problem. But you get the hang of it at some point. You’ll know what to prioritize (or how to deal with not getting everything done). It’s a fun game. My first real Zombie game. And it’s on my “want to get 100%” list. We’ll see about that I guess xD

Kyrrelin

The look of your main panel looks so great! :3 not a little bit envious Now I realized that I forgot to comment about it on your last report. XD
Good to know that Bloodstained is super as I am really interested in it, but I was a little bit afraid how it turned out as there were some rumors. ;)
Pikuniku is really silly, but a lot of fun .:D At least I enjoy this kind of minimalistic humor. ;) Need to run another playthrough as I missed two achievements.
I am now hunting last achievements in Cook, serve, delicious! before I move one the second game, didn’t even know that there will be third one! Great news. :D

kubikill

Thanks! I’m working on a generator for it so others can make one of these too :)

I managed to complete the singleplayer mode in Pikuniku a few days ago, it was awesome but a bit too short. I had to do an another playthrough too, since I missed 1 trophy (curse you, Mr. Sunshine trophy!). Can’t wait to play the co-op mode with my friend!

Good luck with the CSD achievements! Those “customers served” and food pin achievements do take quite a while to get them :)

Kyrrelin

Ooooh, that would be awesome! :3

I see that you got the “999” achievement, can’t really say that I am looking forward to it. XD How many times have you tried for it?

Yeah, I am nearing 10k costumers, luckily in the extreme mode you get lot of costumers so hopefully it won’t take as long. But the exotic food pin would be hardest for me, this one I have just around 600… gah. XD

kubikill

I tried a few times but then I decided to take the easy way out by positioning myself in a way so I don’t have to move at all. Took me 2 tries before that worked, with the trick it’s not that hard.

I remember that some pins have less than 6 foods eligible for it, focus on those first and fill the rest of the menu with foods from the other pins. This should make things a bit faster. Fortunately you at least don’t have to do all orders perfectly :)

Vito

I almost missed your post! I like the idea to review one game and leave the others. It really puts the focus on one of the games and (in my case at least) makes you read about games, I normally wouldn’t read the reviews for. TIL that Shenmue is a few years older than I thought. Looks quite good for a ~20 year old game.

I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on State of Decay (should it make the review), I unfortunately got stuck at some point, lost my saves and don’t want to start anew… But it definitely has some interesting mechanics.

kubikill

When I was writing my previous post, I had this idea to highlight one game each month (like I did with Fallout 4 there or Shenmue here). And now that I decided to write 1 review per month, I can combine those 2 ideas together :)

Part of why Shenmue looks so good for 1999 is because it was made for the Dreamcast, which released before its competitors (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube). Too bad that the Dreamcast failed, it was like having an arcade in your own home.

I’m not even sure if I’ll beat State of Decay this month, but I’ll try to write a review for it :) Sad to hear you lost your saves, though :( I would do the same if it happened to me as well.
