June’s Stats
aka. When the backlog explodes in my face
Hello fellow assassins :) I hope you all had a good June and you’re ready for July. It was a pretty productive month for me gaming wise, but I am ashamed to report that despite my efforts, the backlog took a revenge on last month. I have no excuse, really. I could blame it on my astonishing luck this month, on my friends kindness or on the sales, but the truth is I’m just extremely weak. I guess I got a little comfy with how many games I removed during last month’s purge and I got careless with activating games. At least, I plan on playing all of them, not like the garbage I removed before. Oh well… On the plus side the heatwave kept me awake most nights so it left me a lot of time to play. Excuse some of the short reviews, but there’s only so many things you can tell about a HoG without repeting yourself.
What about you, did the sales had an impact on your backlog? And what are you plans for July, gaming, holidays or both?

Thanks to my picker for PoP7, I got around to finally play Virginia, which had been sitting in my backlog for quite some time. It was such a weird yet interesting experience. I might be stating an evidence, but fans of Twin Peaks, you should play this game. I'd call it an interactive visual novel, and you don't really have choices but you still get to control the character around. I think what made me feel wierd at first was the fact that you play a series of scenes and not the whole story in a go, and it's one of those game where you have to figure out the plot by yourself, yet I really enjoyed it.
Biggest Disappointment of the Month goes to... Very mild spoilers, if you wanna avoid them, feel free to skip to the next game report. Still here? Ok then. Having loved the first two seasons of TWD by Telltale, I had high expectations when this game first got out, but wanted to wait for the whole season to be out to play. I kept away from all spoilers but I was reading here and there, that this 3rd season was really weak, and now that I've played it, I agree. Even if you disregard the technical bugs (hello infinite rays going out of the main character and shitty import of my saves from the previous games), there are still some major flaws. The first one being that you do not play Clem this time. You're playing Javi, and neither him nor any of the new characters were interesting/lovable to me. And here comes the second flaw. Even if you don't play Clem, she's in the game and it creates a very hard situation. As the player, if you've played the previous seasons (which I assume if you go play season 3) then you've already formed an opinion about Clem, and most of us got kind of attached, let's admit it. But you're playing Javi and as such, you're supposed to care more about your family than a stranger you just met and not in the most trustworthy circumstances. Yet, being offered the choice between siding with your loved ones and that new comer, as the player we tend to side with Clem rather than those useless new characters. Anyway, enough of the renting, I could go on about the plot too but I don't wanna spoil that much (feel free to talk about it in the comments under spoiler, I'll be glad to discuss it).
Welcome in my newly found corner of shame. Well not yet actually, it'll start in the next review, but this is the game that initiated the whole thing. So a friend convinced me to give a try to Nekopara as he has those spare keys from the recent Humble Bundle, and to do so, he first gave me this one, certifying that I probably had a wrong impression about the game being some perv thing, and that it was all innocent. And yes, Vol. 0 is a sweet innocent slice of life prequel to the 2 others. It's actually the only one I'm ok with.
Now the real corner of shame and uncomfort. It turned out that this game series has a really disturbing premise, that apparently doesn't bother a lot of people seeing how popular is that series (but I've also seen I'm not the only one with that particular opinion). In that universe, there is such a thing as "Cat girls" that the game literally describes to you as women bodied + cat ears and tail, but with the mind of cats. So basically they are your pets. And then, the plot turns out to rapidly only be that the said catgirls have the hots for you, their master, and end up coming on to you (and yes, having sex with you). They're stated as "having the mind of cats" remember? I'm not even sure what the game is implying about your pets but hey, that was too weird for me.
More of the same. Thanks for being able to fast skip some parts.
I discovered this game thanks to Selby. This was short but a quite different experience, I think it does especially work if you were already on the internet in the early 2000s, it gave me quite a nostalgia kick. It's free, so I highly recommend you check it out, you only need about half an hour to complete the game, the rest of the time was spent to get the cheevos.
I had some nostalgic moment earlier this month and reinstalled World of Goo. It was nice to replay it but I had forgotten how hard the cheevos were on this one. Rip completion rate I guess, but I'll get back to it.
And now with the HoGs, which was obviously this month's main focus. Adam Wolfe was not the first one I completed this month, but it was indeed my favorite of all the ones I played (maybe ever). Sure, some of the puzzles were quit easy, but there is a lot of things this game is doing right. First of all, I really loved the graphic style, quite Noir-movie style. The story was nice, and at least more original than most Artifex games (even if I admit I'd have loved it even more without the surnatural part). The hidden object scenes were making more sense too. A++ in my book, I will have to investigate about the other games from this dev.
I was lucky enough to win this one from Ninglor's giveaway for the monthly theme, and was quite excited to try this new Artifex series. I liked the new Alchemy book mecanics they introduced in this series and the quality overall is on the good artifex ones. Nothing really special to add, but a nice discovery.
Later in the month, I won the sequel from Artifex themselves and it was as enjoyable to me as the first one.
This game was given to me by Jeff a few days ago, and I wanted to complete it before the month ended as part of the challenge. It was an interesting discovery as it's a mix between drawed scenes and FMV acting for the characters. The acting is very over-the-top and cheesy, let's be honest, but to me it adds to the character of the game. Puzzles and hidden objects scenes wise, they were actually pretty solid. Some users were complaining about some bugs but I didn't encounter any so it was all good. A hidden gem if cheesiness doesn't make you roll your eyes but rather laugh at it.
In the average group of your Artifex game, on the theme of the phantom of the opera. Nothing special but not bad either. Yes.
One of the recent Artifex game where you're a cop and it entangles a regular crime investigation with some ghost stories. I enjoyed it, goes on the top category pack for me, but probably because I enjoy those police procedural shows. I wish sometimes Artifex would leave the supernatural part out of it though.
I resumed playing the Enigmatis series. It's one of my favorite Artifex series, and the second game is my favorite in the trilogy. Of course the 3rd one is more shiny but story wise I thought this one was the best as it develops the whole plot of the first game into a bit more complex mystery. A+
The more polished one of the trilogy, obviously, as it's the most recent. The art is really great, and the games introduces a few new mecanics and puzzles. It concludes nicely the series, with a little Tomb Raider feeling. Solid series for a HoG.
Not an Artifex one, but I had read good things about it, so I tried to win it on SG. The game is clearly not as polished, mostly because it doesn't have voice over, but to me it was not a problem. I actually forgot about it after the few first minutes of the game, and enjoyed the overall experience. It has a nice plot and some cute little characters you're helping, which honestly seemed a bit of a rip off from Little Big Planet design wise. (That being said, almost all Artifex games design/plot are ripped off from famous video games). I'd recommend it if the lack of voice acting doesn't bother you.
Another enjoyable series from Artifex. I wouldn't call it a trilogy as they're not linked between each other, neither by the story or the protagonists. I guess the common theme is just the grim fairy tales. This first opus was quite nice even if the game is a bit dated, I liked the story. One of the interesting game mechanics from this series is that you get a pet to help you with certain tasks/puzzles.
My favorite one of the 3, and I'm not just saying that because you get a pet otter. YES an otter. Or because the game features some kind of sheep. Hum...
The 3rd installation was quite a thing achievement wise. I had to restart it after completion to get the last cheevo: "Complete a HoG scene in less than 20s"... Yes you read correctly. Other than that, it was a really nice HoG even though I got an Assassin's Creed rip off feeling from the opening scene. Artifex, please stop, just get original work done.
Nothing much to say about this one, pretty average.
I wanted to try another Alawar game after liking World Keepers: Last Resort but even though this one has voice acting, I enjoyed it less overall. Not bad, just average I'd say.
It was an ok Artifex one, very much Bioshock rip off (which surprised me as they already had a bioshock rip off with Abyss: The Wraiths of Eden).
Another average Artifex game. I didn't enjoy it that much but I think it's because I've reached a temporary overdose of HoGs for playing so many of them in a row.

About Walking Dead: in my opinion, there are not so many interesting characters in first 2 seasons. Most of them died before I had remembered their names. So it was hard for me to feel empathy for them, ‘cause all of them except Clementine was just potential dead men who’ll probably die or disappear in next few scenes.
About Nekopara: cat is fine too.
In that sense, I sort of agree, even though I had a bit more interest for Lee or Kenny than any of the characters of this new season. But still my point is that the premise for season 3 where the character coming from the previous season (ie. Clem) is supposed to be the untrustworthy newcomer to the protagonist, yet to the player playing the said protagonist, we already have a passive with her.
What an amazing progress. Congratulations :)
I agree with what you said about The Walking Dead word by word.
I have Virginia waiting to be played, it’s currently installed. I will focus on it next possibly after Holy Potatoes A Weapon Shop. Which achievement are you missing? There is an achievement to finish the game without quitting in one sitting after earning all achievements in previous playthroughs. Could it be that one? Will you replay the game again to get whichever one you are missing?
Thank you :3
I’m missing the cheevo for a second playthrough, I only did one. It’s called Doam and the description says “Bis!” which only implies to complete the game a second time without chapter selecting I think. The one saying “you must have collected all the cheevos in a previous game and start a new one” in the steam guide is incorrect I think, as it unlocked at the end of my first playthrough. Anyhow, I intend to replay the game and get this last cheevo, I just got busy with all the HoGs >___>
Oh I checked the same guide and yea the description sounded weird. I’ll still try to get every achievement on first playthrough. As there are no choices I am not really interested in playing 3-4 times just cause I made a mistake with an achievement :P
Game looks quite short though so I suppose it won’t be that bad.
The rest of the guide is pretty useful though. If you wanna get all the cheevos in one go, I’d recommend following a guide as most of them can be missed if specific stuff are not done ;)

sneaking around :3
Good to see a positive review for Virginia, I was a bit surprised to see the mixed reviews on Steam and a lot of people on threads I read just suggesting not to bother with it… but I bought it in the sale as it looks like a short story game with an interesting graphic style and nice music. I’m looking forward to playing it. Well done on the rest of your progress :) No comment on the NEKOPARA games… Sucks to hear about the Walking Dead though, it seems like Telltale really aren’t making any good moves at the moment, I just wish they’d stop taking on several series at once and focus on producing something on the level of some of their earlier ones.
I can understand the mixed reviews as I think it’s not for everybody. Also I went in expecting something more “interactive” where had choices to make, which is not really the case. Still I did really enjoy it, I hope you do too. And yeah for Telltale, I wish they took a step back and reconsider the “let’s just take whatever license is popular and make a game with it, and fast” current policy.
purr Nyah-ce ones!:3
Merci :3
Oh nice, I didn’t know you spoke Canadian too! *runs away*
It’s weird to see a long list of beaten games accompanied with an intro that says the backlog actually gained on you this month, but I definitely see how it can happen. Between gifts, wins, bundles and the steam sale I think I ended up activating 30 or 40 games this month, it’s madness T_T
I know right?
Nothing to say about HOGs as I’ve never played one; I haven’t read the review for TWD as I don’t want spoilers and I’m sad to hear you found it disappointing but I guess it’s not much of a surprise, the series kinda went downhill after the first.
As for Nekopara, I share similar thoughts.
I like VNs and I don’t have anything against lewd games but I just couldn’t bring myself to keep reading past the first couple chapters of vol.1
Vol.0 wasn’t bad because it was mostly fun skits, I think I’ll go back and just skip the others for the free 100% eventually ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’ll like to know your thoughts about TWD3 when you’ll have played it.
I don’t even mind lewd games either (when it’s adults involved) even tho I don’t care for them either. But this series premise are just really disturbing in itself. Like i said, Vol.0 doesn’t apply, it’s actually just a cute slice of life VN, but in Vol.1 and the rest, it goes downhill VERY fast.
If there’s one good thing about not having much money, it’s that your backlog rarely gets completely out of control during sales ;D Myself, I grabbed six games from my wishlist, most notably Renoir and To Be or Not To Be?. Now let’s hope that I actually decide to play them some time in the near future, hah!
As for my plans for July, it couldn’t be any better. Started playing the Risen trilogy recently, perfect for Nelly’s monthly theme :) Not much to talk about when it comes to real life though, just enjoying all the free time, relaxing, playing games… Nothing out of the ordinary.
You’ve made some awesome progress with all the HOGs you’ve beaten by the way, good job :) Good luck playing your newly added games, have fun with them!
Thank you :)
So far I only grabbed 2 games for myself during the sales (and not even on steam): Dead Age that I haven’t activated yet, and Shovel Knight because for 4€ it was too good of a deal to pass. That being said, I still have some money in my steam wallet and the sales are not over yet. Renoir looks super cool, I looked at it because LastM made a gib for it. To be or not to be? is quite fun. I loved the silliness of it and the art is really great since it comes from an actual collaborative comic book.
Sounds like a good plan, enjoy your summer!!
