Long time no post …
Didn’t really get much done this month, but I started playing Murdered: Soul Suspect sometime this week and just finished it. It wasn’t great, but I still liked it.
The story is ok, could have been great but turned out somewhat simple – it was a little annoying though that the main character is sooo slow in understanding what’s going on. I’m not sure if the authors just grossly underestimated the players, or if someone thought it would be a good idea to have the player solve the “mystery” literally hours before the character does. Stupid either way.
The collectibles in this game are a little annoying since there are no area specific counts – you don’t know if you cleared an area or where to look for missing stuff. Luckily the collectibles are rather easy to find, I got all but 4 without any backtracking. What’s really annoying is that some of them are missable (“investigation clues” count towards the achievements, you can’t repeat investigations but finish them without all the clues). There aren’t any savegames either, only the one autosave, so for the 100% I’d have to replay the whole game. Oh well. Oops, seems I was totally wrong on this. Well, some collectibles are missable once you triggered the final “chapter”, but that’s about it.
Anyway, all flaws aside it is still a very nice game and I enjoyed it.
I also completed Nightmares from the Deep 2: The Siren's Call yesterday, which is just your standard Artifex Mundi HOG – nothing really remarkable, but still nice. And finally, I finished Solar Flux last weekend – still a lot to do for the 100%, but it got a little tedious. Maybe some other time.
So … all in all that makes 3 SteamGifts wins removed from the backlog. Yay!
It’s disappointing to hear that the storyline hasn’t much else going on other than the “mystery” in order to keep it entertaining all the way.
I personally like autosaving in games but can’t understand when they decide to make it the only option. Your example clearly shows its negative effect.
Oh no, it’s not like that at all, the story has a lot going on and works pretty well. It’s just that the main character takes an awfully long time to make one specific connection, that really bothered me and is a really weak point in the story. And that gave me plenty of time to get a good idea where it all was leading. The game still did a very good job on filling in the details until my suspicion was finally confirmed.
And it turned out the autosaving / achievements mess was a little less bad than I thought. Still, could have been avoided by providing manual savegames / multiple save slots / whatever.
Oh okay, thanks for clarifying. I misunderstood that part a little bit then. :)
Huh, now you’re making me question if I actually want this game. I’ve had my eye on it for a while but if a simple mystery is all there is to it then I don’t know.
“investigation clues” count towards the achievements
They do in fact not count for any achievement, I missed one clue in all the the investigations and still got all the achievements. It still bothers me that it’s the only thing in the entire game that I missed. You are in fact missing three graffiti’s, which do count for achievements. The single savegame thing is certainly one of the most annoying features of the game. Congrats on finishing it though.
Yep I do miss those graffitis – in the museum, which you can’t visit anymore with the “final savegame”. But you are right, it seems those 3 would have been all I needed for the achievements … didn’t check that, I only remembered the in-game counter was 170something and the Steam achievement counter ended at 240something. Huh. So it seems I made the whole the missable collectible/savegame “mess” up … oops.
Yeah the museum is were most people mess up from what I’ve read (especially since it isn’t revisitable). I tried to warn people about it in my review of the game. The graffiti’s are also extremely hard to spot without using a guide or map.
Actually those graffitis became a lot easier once I realized that one of the strange marker glyphs means “graffiti nearby”. I still don’t know what the others mean, can’t be anything too important :)
Oh, I don’t think I noticed those or payed much attention to them. You have a keen eye.
I’m sure you noticed them, but probably didn’t think about it; at first I thought they were supposed to be some sort of way markers, but that didn’t make sense. Couldn’t make a screenshot because my save is stuck in the museum (hrmph) but this it what they look like:
… although this one is not the “grafitti nearby” one. They are usually on the floor or on walls.
Yeah that’s what I assumed you meant, just didn’t think they had any relevance, mind blown :D
Sounds about right. Considering what it supposedly started as not so bad but definitely could have been fleshed out more.
Grats on the progress! :)
I did enjoy the game, but didn’t try to get the collectibles. I wanted to revisit it but couldn’t motivate me
