IAmA Goat

Dear Assassins.

Hi, I'm a goat and I'm an addict. Some of you probably recognize me from SteamGifts, even tough I'm not chatty and my activity is very erratic. I have a gigantic backlog problem that could be tracked back to the age of 8-bit gaming. I need help.

I'm not good with words and English is not my first language. Don't be surprised if my posts read like ramblings of a madman under influence.

Peace out, BBG.

Minesweeper Plus

Actually I'm doing it huge disservice by calling it Minesweeper Plus. While the main concept is very similar to that of Microsoft's classroom/office time-killer, Hexcells is much better in every possible aspect. There are hexes instead of square fields and you need to figure out which hexes are blue (mines). And there's absolutely no need for blind clicking, every level can be solved without guessing. It's a perfect mindbender - challenging, but never frustrating.

Minor drawback is a white background that can be a bit straining for your eyes, especially since the game has strong "one-more-turn" factor to it. Game is very short, but Hexcells Complete Pack (3 games) is usually just 2,69€ on sale, but even at full price of 8,99€ it's one of the best deals on Steam.

Emily wants to play

Let me start by saying that Dishonored was perfect. I've always enjoyed stealth games with Thief, both The Dark Project and The Metal Age, being right there on top of my all-time favourites. What's more, a story-driven mixture of Thief and Hitman was something I really hoped to play one day. Dishonored delivered. With its steampunk world to top it off it was like a mother of all wet dreams came true. Suffice to say it is the first game ever that I did 2 consecutive playthroughs of, and I've been gaming since the late 80s.

The sequel isn't as good, but it isn't that far from the original either. What's most disappointing is that this time Arkane ignored the story aspect and everything that comes with it. It's a huge bummer because the game lacks that bond that made its predecessor possibly the best game I've ever played. They dropped the ball on optimization too, but this problem is quickly getting patched out, so I'm not really complaining.

That said, everything else that made me love Dishonored is still here and I enjoyed this game immensely. I've completed my stealth, low chaos playthrough with Corvo. Now it's time for Emily Kaldwin to reclaim her throne leaving a trail of mutilated corpses behind. Fun times.

Supergiant sword

I had big reservations about this game because while everyone was raving about Bastion, I couldn't really get why. I gave it several chances, and sure, graphics were great, narrator idea interesting, but the game itself quickly bored the hell out of me. Then came Transistor and the hype was on again. Year and a half after its release I finally decided to enter a Transistor giveaway. Well, I thought, at least I'll have better motivation to give it a proper go.

I finally did and it was a pretty swell experience that I ended up wishing was a bit longer. Excellent graphics and soundtrack are well known features, so I'll just say that combat was something that I found to be very enjoyable. And story too, good stuff. I'll definitely give Bastion another chance one day.

Shitbot is my spirit animal

Back in 2000 when I first played The Longest Journey I have to admit I was disappointed with it. Don't get me wrong, the game was good, I just didn't see anything special about it. Probably because while I loved the parts that took place in Newport, the cuteness of Arcadia didn't really sit well with me at the time. On the other hand, I didn't mind crappy stealth and combat sequences from Dreamfall that so many people had gripe with, and I liked it much more. And over the years I kept reading how great the first part was, and how big of al let down sequel was.

I'm telling you this because it's funny how time can change your perspective. I've re-played both TLJ and Dreamfall recently in preparation to play Chapters and came to appreciate the former much more than all those years ago (I still liked Dreamfall just as much as before, but I could see why people were angry about it). The latest iteration of the saga is a fine conclusion. Great story, some amazing characters (Crow & Shitbot!), solid voice overs, good music, fantastic visuals and locations are definitely the strong points of Dreamfall Chapters. It's not perfect, though. After a strong beginning it slowly starts to lose its pacing and ultimately borders borders being straight up boring somewhere mid-game. Fortunately it makes a complete u-turn later and last 2 books are amazing. The other problem is optimization, or rather complete lack thereof. My PC is not a monster, but it has enough power to run Witcher 3 with mostly maxed-out settings and smooth 60fps @1080p. Yet it struggled to do the same with Dreamfall Chapters. Due to spending most of my PC gaming years with a hardware that was average at best I rarely whine about performance issues, but from a game that had its first episode released over 2 years ago I expected much more in this regard.

Electric sperm saves the day

Nice and relaxing platformer/runner mix with a surprisingly good soundtrack. In my humble opinion not worth the regular price, though.

You play as a sparkly electric ball with a task of bringing back electricity to a city sunk in darkness after major power outage. Most of the time you'll spend traversing the power lines spread between various structures, powering up street lamps, houses, AC units, etc. in variety of neighbourhoods. Your performance is measured by the number of things you manage to power up and amount of little lightning bolt tokens you collect on your way through the levels. There's no real difficulty in it as you can't die. Every few stages game changes into kind of a runner/rhythm game. These levels can be actually challenging, especially if you want to want to gather all collectibles, but I guess it's mostly due to the sudden contrast in difficulty.

TurnOn was made by a team of 4, which is impressive, but it shows. Game's very short and it gets buggy once you get closer to the end. I enjoyed it for its casual, relaxing gameplay, pretty graphics and nice soundtrack, but I got it for free. Had I paid 15 euro for it, I think I would be much more critical. It's worth considering on sale, bundled it will be definitely worth getting.

Also worth noting is it plays much better with controller, even though originaly apparently it supported only keyboard.

Girl in the Tower, Madwoman in the Attic

Down-scrolling precision platformer. Pretty easy, I guess, since I've been able to beat it without any frustrations and normally I suck big time at games like that. It's very pretty, controls are responsive and the rudimentary story is kinda funny too. Game's very short which makes it great choice for a free evening.

The sword isn't broken at all

I'm re-playing the series in order to refresh my memory before finally playing Broken Sword 5. I have to say I'm having fun and enjoy them every bit as much as years ago. 3rd installation of this point and click saga is a bit of a downgrade for the franchise, though. There's very few puzzles, lots of crates to push around to create a path and horrible controls. Otherwise it's more of the same. With trademark characters, funny dialogues and mysterious conspiracies and phenomena this time including The Voynich manuscript, telluric energy and the usual suspects in form of Knights Templar.

Overall, a very nice blast from the past.

Outstanding formatting! I’m impressed! (and congrats on assassinating those games)

Garcias

First of all, welcome! And now…
HOLY CRAP this is so beautifully organized and easy to read! Congratulations on such good progress (that looks small compared to your enormous backlog) but still, impressive!

LastM

I love how you people do your posts. I have no clue of how you did that, but it’s awsome. Also congratz on finishing so many games! You reminded me that I still have to finish Dreamfall Chapters. I loved TLJ so much when I was younger. Even the second, altough not great and clunky most of the time, I still couldn’t help, but love Zoe Castillo as a character. DfC, however, I just couldn’t get past chapter 4. The wait from 1 chapter to another was terrible.

de.tail

I bet it took ages to write out all the code for that. Shame there’s no wysiwyg tool to make it easy for non-web savvy coders to make nice blog posts like that. One can wish… :D

LastM

I don’t even know what wysiwyg means LOL

de.tail

Sorry. It’s the ridiculous abbreviation for What You See is What You Get. Basically the toolbar bit you see in most modern forums & wordpress, etc. that let’s you adjust font sizes, colors, apply bold/italics, create tables, add links & images & so on rather than you having to type out html or css style code for everything. ;)

LastM

No need to apologize. I’d love to have something to help me write here. I’ve seen some people do some crazy stuff, play with colors, links, tables, etc. Some kind of “helper” would be really nice for all of us that don’t understand shit about coding.

de.tail

I was recently linked to this persons profile page: http://backlog-deepness.rhcloud.com/users/Akantha - click on the paperclip icon & it will fade in some content with links to various templates. I’ve been using it to customize my profile a little bit. However it seems that the markdown code won’t work inside of any custom divs you create, so you will have to rely on html & css styling to actually create custom content. As for BBG formatting, it kind of reminds me somewhat of Twitter Bootstrap, though I’m not all that savvy on it myself. Besides, for the odd comment you get here on an update I don’t see much point in spending longer than you need to on a post. I bet it took a good hour or 2 just to setup up the template before even moving onto the content, though they could just be really fast at coding - I dunno. :D

Big Bad Goat

True, preparing this post took quite some time, but it’s kind of a hobby of mine and I had lots of fun doing it :) It’s been a while since the last time I had opportunity to toy with layouts, so freedom BLAEO site gives in this regard actually played a big part on why I applied for membership.

de.tail

I used to dabble in website development, but I find it a bit hard to keep up with these days because there are lots of different code formats & then of course you have fallback code & different css styles for various browsers & devices. I prefer the days when html was the go to code format. :D

Mostly I know html & css, with a small side order of php & jquery. My current website is the first time I’ve used Bootstrap & to be honest I’m struggling with it a little bit as my memory is not all that good & I’m constantly having to look up css classes & font awesome stuff, etc. Normally I used to write all my own code or at least modify snippets I found by searching on google in notepad++ then Sublime Text (once I discovered that).

Big Bad Goat

If you’d like to know more about basics of html, css, etc. I recommend W3schools. It’s very accessible, has lots of code examples that you can tweak with and see the results of your changes. I’m no expert myself (I just really like to do this stuff), and I use this site every time I have the need to work on creating/adjusting a layout. In relation to my post and BLAEO in general Bootstrap section would be the place to go. Also, don’t be a stranger if you have more specific questions or need any help. Just remember I’m a complete layman :)

LastM

Thx! I’ll take a look when I have some free time.

Big Bad Goat

Characterization is probably the best thing about TLJ series. Few games have such great protagonists and so many memorable characters. I never play episodic adventure games before the whole story is released and this one took so long. On the other hand it gave me time to play through the first 2 games :)

LastM

I’ll try to finish it some time in the future, but the first game, even years later, is so much superior than this new iteration that I’m more inclined to play TLJ again than finally finish DfC. Anyway, really nice formatting and congratz again!

de.tail

Very nice bit of formatting there. :)

Aye unfortunately you are completely right about Broken Sword 3 feeling like a downgrade. Broken Sword 4 felt even worse & was plagued with optimization issues & lots of people couldn’t get it to run at all back when it came out. I’ve only played the first episode of Broken Sword 5 so far & I wasn’t so keen on it - mostly because it feels rushed & like Mr. Cecil & rest of Rev Soft team didn’t really care that much about the project which is a crying shame as I loved the first game (original not director’s cut). The graphics are really nice though & at least it’s back to looking somewhat 2D again. :)

Big Bad Goat

I’m going to start BS4 soon. I can’t remember a thing about it, other than it wast the first part that got a fully localised release in Poland and it was horrible. I ended up pirating the English version to play with original voice overs.

de.tail

I never got to play it when it was originally released. I played the first 2 games as soon as they came out on PC. The third game I ended up playing on original Xbox I think. The 4th game I played a few years back & it ran horribly on the laptop I had at the time even though the specs on it were miles higher than what the game needed. I don’t remember much of the story-line either. Just something about the mafia or some gangsters & a butchers shop - that’s about as far as my memory extends.

I’m a VO fan as well - well when it comes to TV & movies. I don’t mind dubbing in games so much as long as it sounds ok.

lmxn

Welcome! First post and already making everyone jealous of your formatting. :P Only gripe is it looks off on mobile.

Big Bad Goat

Hey! As much as I love tweaking html/css and playing with layouts, I don’t really know much about it. I learn as I go and usually end up messing up one thing or another, and mobile is my Achilles’ heel ;) I’ll look into it and maybe finally manage to learn something about it.

Lucky Thirteen

Hi goat, welcome to BLAEO!
Awesome formatting; and very much agreed with what you said about Dishonored (1) and the Thief games! I’m a huge fan of stealth, myself :)

Big Bad Goat

I highly recommend Styx: Master of Shadows, if you hadn’t played it yet. Very good stealth game.

Lucky Thirteen

Finished Styx: MoS just earlier this month hehe :) Currently hyped about the second Styx game (Shards of Darkness)!

Forsaken

I shared the same criticisms regarding Dishonored 2. Absolutely a great game overall but story was seriously lacking compared to the first game. It did have some breathtaking level design though. I still can’t get past the awesomeness of Stilton’s mansion and exploring it layer by layer both in the past and in the future with different consequences depending on my actions in the past.

And yes I’ll join the long line of people who looked at your formatting with a watery mouth. It took me hours to do a simple gallery on my posts or to learn how to post those thumbnails. I can’t even begin to imagine the hard work and all the time put into this. I wish I could comprehend this but it’s way beyond me.

Welcome to BLAEO and have fun with your backlog.

Big Bad Goat

True. I couldn’t believe how much work they put into creating the Clockwork Mansion and 4(!) versions Stilton’s mansion.

Douglas

What a nice format you did there :o I’m impressed (I always think about change my posts, but I still need to find something that I like - tried lot of stuff and didn’t like anything).
And, welcome to BLAEO!! Hope you enjoy and hope to see more posts from you :D

Arbiter Libera

Mad jelly. Let me ask you a technical one - you regulate tab dimensions manually or was it a happy coincidence game titles fit in entirely?

Big Bad Goat

Due to the number of tabs I had to decrease default font size a little bit and padding in one of the tabs. I used this post to summarize last 2 months or thereabouts, so this shouldn’t be a problem in future posts, as it’s unlikely that I’ll need more than 4-5 tabs. That said, long game titles could be a problem :)

Arbiter Libera

I see. Thanks, I’ll get down to inspecting it. :)

Big Bad Goat

Here’s the code for header/menu http://pastebin.com/PZfANtb3

Arbiter Libera

That’s a bunch of code I don’t have to reverse engineer. Much appreciated.

malabagaa

Welcome ^_^

Nice first post! :D
And that’s a good selection of games :)

Am I really the only one who didn’t like Hexcells? Played Hexcells+ and at this point I’m starting to think I didn’t fully understand it because I had to do a lot of wild guessing :\
Liked Freedom Fall too :) Its style attracted me (later I discovered it’s from a deviantART user I follow) and I’ll try to 100% it someday.
BS3 was the first of the serie I played. To me it was good enough, but feelings/memories may be influencing my judgement. =P

btw, if you didn’t notice yet, in the dropdown menu on the upper-right corner you can find Setting where you can set a description for your profile (in case you want to put this intro -or something else- there)

uguleley

Welcome to the group! This already goes without saying, but I’m very impressed with your post. It’s obvious that you know your ways with HTML. :)

Dishonored is indeed a spectacular game, I’m looking forward to play the sequel some day. It’s going to be quite a while since my current desktop barely tops the minimum recommendation for that game.

TopDeer

Wow =o
Time to dissect and study your layout =)
