Summer Sale 2020 update
I forgot to post an update from this sale, as I did not buy anything :hehe_dogo:. It’s because I remembered that I have code for 3 months for Xbox Game Pass laying around, and activated it.
I may not have time to play everything from to-beat list, so I will need to prioritize something.
In general Xbox Game Pass is really good offer, but price in comparison to say EA Origin Access is high. I can have EA OA for 15 pounds per year, and one month of Xbox GP is 8 pounds. I may pay for one month if I really want to complete some game, but I will not pay 100 pounds to keep it for a year.
But their PC app is still in beta, and it’s shit:
- It does not show any profile data (playtime, achievements etc.)
- Achievement pop ups does not work for me
- It takes too long to open the app when it’s minimized in the tray (should not take solid few seconds to see green XboX logo on SSD drive)
- Starting the game is broken, and it may be needed to click to play game twice, as first try just minimized Xbox app without starting anything
- No offline mode if there is no internet connection
- Settings are limited to changing installation folder, and if it should start with windows
- Not possible to start game from the tray level, need to bring up whole application
I know, I know. BETA. But it can’t even do properly the things it was made for - starting the game without hassle. So I dunno. MS needs to work on this thing a long time, for it to be on pair with Steam or Origin.
Edit - someone told me that Metro: Exodus is no longer in the Game Pass. Imagine paying for a month to see game disappears shortly after xD They don’t even show exactly when game is removed, only says “soon”. Another minus for whole service. They should be more open about when game is removed from the service.

Xbox game pass PC was a rather good value at launch and I can still see their offer. It’s still only 4€/month. Not sure why it costs twice for you and in GBP at that!
However, their catalogue is way better than the one from EA which to me holds barely any value. But I guess it all depends on what games you’re looking for.
Though they do have a shitty app. And I can agree with all your bullet points and wish they’d work harder on fixing their apps. There’s one odd thing though, when you say “It takes too long to open the app”. I mean, sure it takes like 2-3 seconds, but that never really bothered me. Until I’ve read it here xD now it’s like I can’t unsee it haha.

Well I was paying 15 pounds for whole year, and always could find something I want to play on Origin. Now it will be not so tempting, as EA games start to return on Steam though. But when I was browsing Xbox catalogue I was like “meh, betean. Meh, beaten. Meh, not interested”. While on Origin it was “Oh nice, Unravel. I can’t play it on Steam or somewhere else”.
There is offer for 4 pounds, but only limited time. Later it goes back to 8 pounds.
Even on my old laptop when Steam released new library it was not taking that long to render the game page… I mean Xbox is only bare game page, without any “Extras”. So what takes it so long? Imagine if they don’t optimize it, and start to add more options.
Plus I broke BLAEO with this update. Proves how broken Xbox Game Pass is :D

So they want now to get playerbase, that’s why they have often promotions that give you 3 months for 1eur or so.
Well, you can always just make a new account to get the promo price!
But so far, it’s definitively the most appealing offer to me due to the catalogue Microsoft has as said and you can’t beat getting new releases in your sub. EA offer is not bad either for the price (it’s 25€ here for a year of basic access though) and could be a good starting point for someone who didn’t play many of these old games or enjoys EA franchises.
Honestly, the new sub services for games is shaping up nicely so far, especially since it “virtually” keeps my backlog clean xD because I don’t add any games to my account! And between paying for a virtual licence and renting games. I kinda prefer renting games if it means I can play some new released games that I was hyped up for!
