December 2020 / January 2021 report
So it’s behind us. Have to say that December turned into a productive month, although it didn’t look like it at the beginning. :)
January turned to be a month of completion of the leftovers, but some other games got played too. Also we are now playing Van Helsing in coop and it’s a huge time sink. ;)
We have completed / beaten a lot of games this year (76 total - here you can see some of my stats), but also acquired much more of them… I wanted to hold new games under 100, failed, at least it wasn’t more than in 2019. So this “challenge” still stays.
Maybe I have said that last year, but we are concentrating mostly on Steam games. Partly because it’s my largest and my main library, but also because I participate in many challenges… but it frustrates me as I am not working on my GoG, Origin or Uplay games… seems as if I can’t play games if I am not challenged for them.
Also, after playing visual novel after a long time, I have realized I actually miss them. So we would like to play at least one a month… we will start with those unfinished though. And not all of them are on Steam, so it won’t help my Steam progress (again, concentrating on it), but my game library will be happy… I think.
One last note, you can find my reviews on Steam if you’d like to mark them as helpful. ;)

The progress is slow, but it’s there.
Enough of small talks and now to the actual assassinations! Good luck in a new month and enjoy your games!
This is simply art. Stunning in all of its aspects.
Beautiful visuals and captivating soundtrack will fill your soul with a lot of emotions, be it sadness, anger, fear or happiness. Instead of words the game uses metaphors and assimilations for its storytelling and it's sufficient. Words would maybe prove as a disturbing element, like this you have to concentrate on the changes in the music, color, your movement… like this you can immerse yourself in the game.
Gameplay wise it reminded me little of Degrees of Separation, you gain new abilities in each of the worlds which are then used to overcome the obstacles. Puzzles are nice, some of them a little challenging. Although the game is linear the world itself is filled with many interactive elements which nicely complement the whole atmosphere. I just love everything about Gris. Can't recommend it enough.
Little Koa is growing up on a small island in the middle of Mara. She is alone now, tending to her island but dreaming about exploring the whole world and becoming a pirate one day! When she finds a strange little creature on the beach her days of loneliness are over. With her new friend, Napopo, she set sails to the vast Mara seas. Koa will then meet different kinds of people with their own dreams, problems or old pains and although she is only a kid, she will do everything in her power to help them.
Summer in Mara is a farming simulator game where you have your own island to take care of. As you progress in the story you will be able to build various structures on it - for example decorations or animal enclosures; cultivate many kinds of vegetables and fruits or plant new species of trees or shrubs. There is a lot you can do in Mara - you can harvest crops, create new items for sale or for manufacturing, go fishing or diving, pick up trash, cook various dishes or you can pat animals. :) I have very much enjoyed developing my island, it's nice to see it grow (not in terms of size).
Exploration is another important part of the game, you can find a lot of new things on your travels (people really throw interesting stuff to the ocean). Also it's a great boost to your income as you can harvest wild crops and then sell it for profit without additional spend.
Story is simple but really nice. It's about growing up, going after your own dreams and trying to be a good person, doing the right things and helping others around you too. Most of the characters are nicely written, although there could have been more varied interaction with them (especially after completing their quests). Quests are of “fetching type” when you do deliveries for them or they send you somewhere. I don’t really mind, as the idea of the game is about Koa helping others… and I usually pick quests and do something different and after I feel like it I deliver it, but I can understand why some of the players are bored by it. Not me though.
I like the graphics, so colorful and cheerful (with a few exceptions) even though there are some shortcomings (rainy day without a rain or so). Soundtrack is very good, characters have their own themes and I visited some of them regularly just to listen to it (like Aquila, Edogan, Fink). I have also liked changing outfits of little Koa, would love to have some of the backpacks! :)
I have truly enjoyed my time in Mara. Yeah, it has some rough edges and you can stump on some bugs (not working achievements were deleted some time ago). Ending was rather rushed and the main villain didn't get proper space, you know the anticipation for meeting up with him is building up and then it's over… truth is I was a little disappointed. City life doesn't change with day cycles (except for important characters), there are still the same people, they stand in the same spots, only animals are moving around… this could have been done in a better way. Also not all of the kickstarter stretch goals were added yet (taking photos, windsurfing, animal breeding…). After getting all you can for your island, completing your fetch quests, there is nothing to do… of course you can still tend to your island, it's very relaxing, but you were already doing it for some time… I think that there is a great potential to still develop the game, add new crops, new animals for your island, new buildings and so on. If not officially then through the mods. For now it seems like the developers are concentrating on different goals in their career, but well, who knows. I still very much recommend this game, it was a very pleasant experience.
Oh, and as you will explore the Mara you can find little crabs with messages from the backers. They are filled with love, hope, happiness… that also add a nice feeling to the game.
This is super amazing chibi game! :D
Old evil is once more threatening the peace of the whole world. Ancient legends speak about a hero rising up from common folk to fight against it. Can all of it be true? Well, only one way to know for sure. Take a hold of your sword, choose your path and begin your adventure!
So, as the name suggests you are playing as a Chibi knight, which is pretty adorable to be honest. You are a cute little ball wrapped up in an armor! As you level up, your armor and sword change their appearance. You can even lock your outfit to your liking - you will level up normally, but won't change the look which is neat but I have enjoyed my progress.
Gameplay wise it's a hack and slash with platformer sequences, I would say. You have basic and special attacks, you can also learn some skills like dash, double jump… Little twist comes with a special attack - when you are Beastmaster you can command beasts, when you become Sorcerer you can select from four spells. Your route is decided after the Prolouge. Game warns you about progressing forward, that you won't be able to come back. So it's best to complete all of the quests in your home village before moving out.
The game is short, it has great pace and you will hardly get stuck. This is great actually as you can't get all of the achievements in one playthrough. Some of them are rather hard (without dying, without some skills…), should the game be longer it would get really frustrating, like this it was great fun! Two routes also offer nice replayability, with different characters, quests, enemies in the middle part of the game. Truth is that the end part is the same but different skills offer different kinds of experience. Some of the fights can be challenging, for a boss fight you have to come up with tactics not just rush them over. Luckily there is no penalty for dying so you can try as many times as you need (except when aiming for the one particular achievement).
The graphics are very cute and the music is good, fitting the game very well. The game was apparently made by father & daughter duo (she even voiced Chibi Knight) and it has a great feeling. It's filled with jokes and references on popular culture, we had some good laughs. If you will take for what it is - cute short funny game, filled with action, you will for sure enjoy it. "Boo ya!"
I love this game!
This is a compilation of three standalone games, as I understand it there were made some changes so it's not completely same as shown in The Final Cut. I have not played these before so I can't really compare with them, but I would say that the third part was a bit lacking. Second part is filled with action, you can't stop for a moment as there is always what to do. And after that it gets somewhat… dry. Overall experience was superb though. ;)
The gameplay is addictive, fast paced and overall super fun. You have many options to set the game to your liking with many skills, perks, gear and even many levels of difficulty settings. Locations are nicely varied and really big. Also there is a lot of hidden stuff to be found, secrets to uncover. The ever present little references to dozens other games and movies make you chuckle every now and then. And there is really a lot of them!!
The mysterious, sometimes creepy atmosphere is greatly built up by perfectly fitting dubbing and a very nice soundtrack. Characters are very likable and the main duo, Lady Katarina and Van Helsing, are just awesome in their interaction, they have great chemistry between them!
We are now playing it in co-op on higher difficulty and it's still the same great fun as before, maybe even better. ;)
This is free otome visual novel which can put many other paid games into its pocket. I was rather surprised by its quality… in art, writing, music… I have truly enjoyed my time with it. After completing the game, we have decided to buy the artbook to show our support to the developers because they made really great work. Also sequel came out recently, which we will grab for sure. ;)
Our known and favorite fairytales are turned into wicked curses that are cast upon those who need to change. Our main heroine, an "Ice Princess", is one of the cursed. In one moment her world turns upside down and she finds herself on the streets in ragged clothes, no one remembering her being the princess. If she wants to go back to the palace, she needs to perform three good deeds. With no inkling how to do that she has to co-operate with others, maybe helping them to break the curse will also help her. First reluctant in the work, she begins to change, her heart melting.
There are five love interests to pursue, one being the true route. None of them is a weak point as all of the guys are interesting and enjoyable (which is rather surprising as usually only two or three are interesting enough for me). I have even liked our main heroine (I usually hate them) and I can understand some of her worries, motives. Story is captivating, pushing you forward, it's really nicely written. There are no typos or mistakes that would break the immersion (at least not that I spotted any).
I have only two rebukes. In one of the routes I would change the good ending, because it wasn't right how they solved it. ;) Other is that one of the support characters didn't get his own route (as was planned), I would love to know more about him.
So, after 230 hours in, I have decided that it's a time to complete the last few achievements. :)
We have mostly played through the Rush Challenge mode and it was fun to play little bit differently. You don't have time to play around, instead you have to hunt for the plorts to make money! As the saying goes - practice makes perfect, I was able to get the gold medal on my third try. It's a challange and you also need a little bit of luck.
We still play it from time to time as the developers are active and add some new content. It's a great, beautiful game that will make you smile. You can read more in my short review here.
We have not enjoyed this one much, there is a lot of backtracking and the hidden object scenes were sometimes misleading. Puzzles were of the easier sort.
Nice aspect was the detective work, where you collect clues and evidence and from them you build up the case.
Straight continuation to the first Enigmatis game. It has very high score on Steam, which I found hard to believe after the first game, but it's rather well deserved.
Visuals are very nice and I liked the story setting more than in the first game, even though there are still some weak points. I liked the puzzles, nothing too hard and some of them were really good! Hidden object scenes were also better, although getting one done under 1 minute proved to be a challenge (and cost me another playthrough).
As a detective, you have to do your work again and gather clues and evidence, which is fun and spice up the gameplay a little.
This game is a lot more interactive than its predecessor, there is a lot you can click on and even two types of collectibles to be found. Mysterious prisoner will share old tale with you and even though it's a part of the story, it's interesting and enjoyable.
Only one thing bothered me. You can skip the hidden object scenes with a Pair-matching mini game. To get all the achievements you have to do at least two whole runs, because you have to do all hidden object scenes and all pair-matching games… I really don't understand why they do that in these kinds of games. There is nothing new for you to see and even if I have enjoyed the story I don't have to see it again right away… but other than that it's a quite enjoyable HOG.
Another nice and enjoyable HOG, although I am bigger fan of the bad guy here than the good ones. :P
It is very colorful and lively. Puzzles and hidden object scenes are good. There were few situations when I got lost and it took me a moment to realize what I am supposed to do exactly, I was probably thinking too much ahead. Also you get a little cute kitty as your helper.
And again, you need to do all hidden object scenes and then domino games instead of it to open all of the achievements…
Story of Detention is set in fictitious Taiwan, currently under martial law. In a secluded high school is issued a typhoon warning, when two students find themselves all alone there, unable to leave. With the storm coming closer the reality begins to change and dreams, nightmares, memories they all get twisted together. The journey to the bottom of the truth will be painful and disturbing.
The atmosphere of the game is very dark, heavy and scary (thanks to Taiwanese/Eastern cultural references). The visuals and music makes it even more unsettling. The story, the conclusion… it's sad, very sad.
Detention is a great point and click adventure where you explore and solve intriguing puzzles. It can be confusing at some moments, but the story just pushes you forwards, you can't hide from the truth.
To see what horrids can happen… to know that some of these horrids happened somewhere in our history… Detention will fill you with many things to think about.
Actually quite enjoyable hidden object game, but truth is that we have played it in two so when you are alone it can get a bit overwhelming and tedious after a while.
There in no story per se, you are a contestant in an international find-and-seek game and you have to overcome your rivals in different countries to reach for the main prize. After that you can challenge up previous main winners and become the ultimate world star!
It's basically one hidden object scene after another (in three different search modes) with few mini games between it. Some of the items are almost blending with the background picture making them very hard to find… although you can use a hint without any penalty. Also the graphic was of a little low quality. The music was rather good, catchy.
It was a nice change to story HOGs we played lately, but can't imagine playing only this type all the time.
Sadly this is an example how a good point and click adventure game shouldn't look like.
Story could be even interesting… three different characters - Vooju Priest, fatty pirate cook and pirate lady captain; forced to somewhat work together to save the world from Vooju Witch and an old evil sleeping deep inside a volcano. Game is divided between our heroes - you can switch between them freely when they still have something to do, they can even give advice to each other on how to proceed in a particular situation although I have found this a little bit lacking. You spent half of the time as ghosts with limited skills and possibilities which can be nicely seen on the inventory system - you don't have everything on you, the hero will just note it for future references so you don't go around with large boulder or something like that (remember Simon and his hat? ;) ).
All of this sounds all right, now to the negative points. When you click on items you get description / comment on it from the characters, that's fine, pretty normal in adventures. Sadly you can't skip them. So, when you are thinking what to do next (happens a lot) and you examine the items you can work with you have to listen to all of the lines again. Some of them were rather long and after a while it turns to be annoying. Moving between screens is delayed by black screen each time you go somewhere… not that I can't wait, but it disturbs the immersion of the situation. There are subtitles 'in game', but not during the cutscenes which was a little troublesome as I am not native English speaker and some of the characters speak with strong accents so I had a problem with keeping up with them and again it disturbs the immersion. Graphic is okay, I am just a bigger fan of 2D or pixel graphics I think.
Story seemed to be a little bit rushed and the ending was a rather disappointing one as there wasn't any real conclusion to it. There were plans for sequel which were not realized, only some spin-off.
Some moments of the game are enjoyable, with good jokes and many referrals on popular culture. But the overall experience was sadly rather boring.
Added Koa from Summer in Mara.

Summer in Mara sounds nice, too bad tho about bugs and stuff and it looks like the game didn’t received an update in over 6 months =/
I didn’t liked GRIS as much as you did lol. It’s beautiful but it didn’t touched me emotionally as it did to so many other people. A game that did tho is Finding Paradise which I finished this week, but that’s for my next post.
Also who do you mean when you say “we” in your posts? You play all games with a partner or something?
Yeah, I know… the developers seemed very responsive at the beginning… it’s a small studio though. There are some flaws, but it’s nothing game breaking and you can easily enjoy the game. It’s just that without them it would be even better experience.
With GRIS it’s difficult, I wasn’t exactly touched by the story more like the interpretation… the art and the soundtrack which is exceptional. It has such strange feeling. It didn’t bring me to the tears, but I think I know what they wanted to say with it.
Haha, yeah, I play a lot with my soulmate. Even if I play single-player games my soulmate is watching me most of the time. Sometimes we play both through the game, that’s why I can have more of the playtime, like in GRIS for example. Sorry for the confusion, when we both like it I tend to write about our combined opinion. ;)
The progress on your Steamgifts wins is actually quite impressive, it’s always nice to see that!
Congrats on the progress this month too, I’m glad to read Summer in Mara is getting some love. I really enjoyed the game despite of its small flaws. It was such a soothing experience.
In an opposite genre, I also loved Detention, I wish that there was a way to play the other game from the studio but it’s still not avail to buy after the massive backlash, and I’m afraid it never will :/
Thank you, I am really proud about it. :)
I have noticed it in your post and was happy about it. :D I totally agree.
Yeah, I have learned about that only after playing Detention and it’s really sad what’s happening. Hopefully it will get released somewhere… someday.
