So my plan going into attacking my backlog, was to finish all the games I’d started and gotten at least one achievement for. As a starting point, I’d have plenty to work with.
But I noticed that Dear Esther was on sale, and realised I already owned the game (surprise, surprise). Contrary to my original plan, I decided to play it despite having never started it before. I thought it would be a good one to actually complete–I rarely 100% games because in most cases that would, you know, require some skill.
It was my first experience with this genre and honestly, it was a nice change of pace (see below). Playing through the game a second time for the director’s commentary also made me appreciate what went into development.
I’ve found these three games quite challenging. I haven’t progressed all that much in Cave Story+ since my last post. I think I’m at the final boss, and I’m in struggle town, left wondering if I’ve screwed up somewhere along the way.
I’m finding Retro City Rampage™ DX frustratingly difficult in parts. There’s an achievement for beating a part of the game called Death Cam VHS without dying. I died. A lot.
Maybe I’m getting older, and the synapses aren’t firing as quickly as they used to. Maybe I suck. Whetever the case, the fact that Super Meat Boy is one of the games I’ve started–and therefore need to beat as part of my plan–fills me with dread.
Hm, where are you at Cave Story+? There is different stuff you can indeed overlook and also make choices which leads to you not getting the best weapon in the game (or getting the actual true ending). I assume you are not talking about Sanctuary because that one is filled with the tears of players.
I assume you are at the triple fight versus the witch, the doctor and the core ? You can still win this but you probably need some memorization. The witch fight is actually not that difficult.
As for Retro City Rampage DX. The game has indeed some hard moments but you usually respawn quite near to the point you die. As for the no-dying achievement. I think you get later something called the superstomp which makes this more …. accessible.
Yes! I believe that’s the fight I’m up to, and by the time I’ve defeated the witch I’ve got very little life left.
Hm, the easiest weapon to chose would be the Spur. But I just assume you don’t have that one as Cave Story+ is very misleading with the weapon trades. Second choice against the Witch would be probably the Sword at Max Level. If I remember correctly best attack from below shortly after she teleports, so the Sword has enough reach. Concentrate first on avoiding damage. This should at least cover the first fight.
You’re correct, I don’t have the Spur, and to make matters worse, my Booster isn’t fully upgraded. Assume this would help with evasive actions. I’ll revisit at some stage, but it looks like I might start again
Ive beat the free version some 5-6 times and have to say… Its so much nicer reaching it with that mason jar that heals you all the way once. Also having every weapon maxed before entering the fight helps and saving missiles for the core.
Yeah good tip, I’ll try again but most likely will start afresh.
I’ve beat Dear Esther once, way before the Landmark Edition. It was alright, but for the life of me, I cannot bring myself to go through it again for the achievements. Not a big fan of walking sims, personally I need a bit more interactivity than that. Maybe some day.
Yeah, the fact that I couldn’t even run was a little annoying. Literally just walk.
I can relate to the frustration with games like Retro City Rampage and Super Meat Boy, they’re waiting in my backlog for me….. I have a whole list of games that I feel like I never make any progress on. Some, like Enter the Gungeon, I really enjoy but after 47 hours I have only 7 achievements!
Enter the Gungeon is another game I’ve had my eye on, and in all likelihood will struggle with. I get fun, and the sense of achievement, but sometimes I want to hop in to the shower, fully clothed, in the fetal position, and ponder my life choices.
LOL, I just noticed that there are two Dear Esther. One with and other without achievements, maybe they have something not in common apart from achievements.
As far as I know, they are the same, only the “Landmark Edition” (with achievs) has a developer commentary.
