I completed Overlord II yesterday … Actually feels like the second time – when I abandoned my first playthrough years ago I can’t have been more than 1 hour from the end. Anyway, I didn’t remember too much and so I started over.
It’s a nice enough game. Setting out to wreak havoc with those pesky misbehaved minions is good fun, but the game isn’t particularly challenging. The solution to all the “puzzles” is pretty obvious, if you even care to call them that. It’s still entertaining, but it does get old after a short while. And … well I remember I really enjoyed Overlord 1, but 2 doesn’t really add anything notable, and the crude humor I enjoyed in 1 seems somewhat more silly in 2 – maybe it’s just me, but 2 made me groan about bad jokes just as much as laugh about good ones. Those elven dudes are particularly not funny. And those Roman guys weren’t either – I liked the whole setting a lot less than 1’s.
So … all in all the game was ok – doesn’t feel like wasted gaming time at all, but after Overlord 1 this sequel feels pretty unnecessary.

I forgot to mention why I picked up Overlord in the first place: I realized that this month’s theme was a good opportunity to return to some abandoned games that I knew would have the stuff I was looking for. Now, what better place to look for Lasers and Neon than Far Cry 3 Blood Dragonyeah ok I didn’t find that Neon. Wow, this game is really great.
I’m generally a bit uneasy with open world games – I mean, I would like to like them, and I usually enjoy them, but … they are just too much for my ocd-ish exploring perfectionism. Thanks to the sheer vastness most of them are so proud of, I tend to abandon these games after a short while, and every time that’s massively dissatisfying.
But this game … the world is much smaller than vanilla Far Cry 3’s (much too big and repetitive, see above) – as far as I’m concerned, it’s just the right size. And the game itself: This is so the perfect 80s trash action movie goodness. No wait. It’s trash action movie plus a heap of snarky self-deprecating sarcasm. It’s really, really great. If you enjoyed Kung Fury, you will love this game.
This game has Uplay achievements and I’m still missing the last one, so for now I marked it beaten. Will return to kill 2 more dragons shooting laser beams from their eyes, because why wouldn’t they sometime soon for the meaningless stupid Uplay 100%.

So … I think I’m at 14/20 for the theme now. Yay :)

I loved Blood Dragon! The best loading screen tips (and the tutorial) I’ve ever had =D
Also, the best part of the franchise (to me, it’s only getting worse with every new Far Cry game) =(

Yeah those loading screens are wonderful. One said something along “Hint: There are hints on the loading screens”, and another one “If you lose all your health, the game will display the warning message ‘game over’.”
I played Far Cry 1 only very briefly and I can’t really remember anything from it. I really liked 2, the setting and atmosphere were great. 3 was ok for gameplay, but the story was just stupid … For one, the whole “rich kid thrown into a hostile environment has to get hard to survive” felt all too much like Tomb Raider 2013, which I had played just before; and then, it didn’t even make sense – one moment you play one of the story missions and that poor boy is almost crying because omg he had to kill someone for the “first” time. An instant later I’m free roaming again and slaughtering like I never did anything else. And then some more moments later you get that (granted: really absurdly fun) mission where you torch those weed plantings, and now the poor baby boy is weilding a flame thrower and laughing like a madman. I didn’t play 4, it looked like the landscape could make the gameplay more interesting, but that’s about everything I know about it.

Wow, so weird to see someone having finished the same game at the same time as me :o I finished (replayed as well) Overlord II yesterday, still have to write my review. I think the humor is pretty comparable to the first game, I think the elves and romans are supposed to be annoying though. I don’t know why but I also prefer the original Overlord. They tried to do some new things, but most of them aren’t very interesting, though I did like when you got to control a minion (the sneak mission especially). My biggest gripe with the game was the stupid minion AI, how you have to hold their hands through the simplest tasks, and how you’re fighting the camera and controls all the time. Still kind of fun game.

Blood Dragon was a pretty cool/funny game :D

Nice progress! Good luck on the rest of the hunt. xD

Congrats, 14/20 is not bad at all. Good luck reaching 20 by the end of the month.

Nice progress, good luck with your missing screenshots. I remember having the same feeling about Overlord 2. I really enjoyed the first one but the second was just… unnecessary like you said.

Well I can say that open worlds are my type of games and oh boy I did love Far cry 3 and Far cry Blood dragon. So I’m glad that you enjoyed it. From your lines I gather small opinion (can I really use opinion here? small opinion doesn’t sounds right) on Overlord 1 so I will add it to my wishlist, thanks :)

I enjoyed Blood Dragon a lot, it fit my sense of humor quite well. :) The delivery was great too, not at all cringy or otherwise missing the mark. Oddly enough, after I finished the main story I wasn’t tempted to explore the rest even though the map is much smaller compared to Far Cry 3, one that I explored all the way.

I’m not excited about the fact you’ve found your experience with Overlord II mediocre as I’m going to play it soon. I was also hoping it would have improved controls, but according to the review from Fallen Kal the controls are pretty similar to the first one. :/

Nice work, hope you’ll find the last ones!

I do own Blood Dragon, but I did the mistake buying it from Humble without checking what platform it came from, and of course it was a Uplay copy… for some reason I tend to only remember games I have on Steam :D

Got to play it some day, I really enjoyed the other Far Cry games, and I love the 80’s action movie setting!
