March’s Stats

aka. Keeping things in balance

Hello fellow assassins, how has March been treating you? I’m not proud to admit it, but real life was busy this month, including time out of town, so not much progress was made regarding the backlog. I barely managed to balance my completed games with games I added, so I guess it’s better than nothing, but still. I hope your month went better and you had time to play :)

Regency Solitaire

15 hours playtime, 17 of 17 achievements

Another "Solitaire with a twist" game, not much to say about it except that it's a good time filler. Enjoyable if what you're looking for is a solitaire game. Also not extremely grindy to 100%, which is appreciated.

Okhlos: Omega

Imagine a fusion between The binding of Isaac and Pikmin, with an ancient Greece theme. Overall a fun game at the beginning, but it gets repetitive really fast (unlike other roguelikes, there is very little variations between runs sadly) plus the difficulty is unecessarly punitive. Some of the enemies/bosses will just obliterate your mob in one shot, which in return makes you so weak it's impossible to damage them... and there is no possibility to pick a difficulty level. I was very enthusiastic about it for the first 10 hours or so, but I'm not sure I'll even try to unlock the achievements I'm missing as I reached a point where the game became more frustrating than fun to me. A little balance patch could go a long way.

Dead Rising 3 Apocalypse Edition

57 hours playtime, 83 of 88 achievements

I'd be lying if I said I didn't have fun playing this game, and it's pretty clear if you look at my hours count, but I have to give you a fair warning. The game may be fun and enjoyable, but as a part of the Dead Rising series, it's a bad one. Let me explain what I mean. Yes, you're bashing zombies, assembling various stuff together to make overpowered weapons, fighting "psychopats" here and there, saving survivors and trying to solve the plot behind all this. However, all the strong elements of the Dead Rising series to me are gone. The time limit is now a joke, the game saves anytime you want unless you're playing in the hardest difficulty, and there is no curve, you're almost immediately so powerful that there is no tension at all. So yes, I would recommend the game but if you're expecting more strictly Dead Rising (1 & 2), you might be disappointed. To be noted that the story DLCs are quite interesting. They let you play various other survivors and give you more backstory/differents points of view in parallel of the main plot.

Escollo picked this one for me for the [March is "play a game you won on Steamgifts" month](https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/GVttn/march-is-play-a-game-you-won-on-steamgifts-month-dont-forget-to-post-your-updates), and it was an interesting one. You play as the chief of the police and have to micromanage your men, assigning them to crimes and calls to respond to, while trying to keep everyone happy. My first run was quite a disaster and I died midway through it, but once I got the hang of it, it became more easy. The game is quite long and can be a bit repetitive sometimes, so if you're an achievment hunter, good luck. Most of them are extremely grindy and require a full individual run. Overall a good game :)

The LEGO® Movie - Videogame

24 hours playtime, 48 of 48 achievements

The only game I played for the monthly theme, but as usual with Lego games I had fun. It's not the strongest of the series (the original StarWars trilogy or the Batman ones are way better imho) but if you've seen and enjoyed the movie, or just like lego games, you'll have a good time.

Zen Bound 2

9 hours playtime, 9 of 11 achievements

The premise of this puzzle game is quite unusual. You have to wrap a cord around a given object, covering most of the surface. I found it relaxing overall, especially in short sessions, but you can see that it's a port meant to be played on a tactile screen. It is ok to play with the mouse, but I also tried it on a friend's tablet and it was infinitely easier to control where you want the cord to go.

The Shadows of Pygmalion

18 hours playtime, no achievements

I won this one in a SG group with the condition of playing and reviewing it under a month, so I went right for it. Despite the first impression you can have looking at the steam store page, it's not necessary your regular anime VN. It actually has an elaborate story and very little nudity/romance/sex plot. Which to me was a huge positive point. Overall a good VN that I'd recommend if you're looking for something else than an excuse to look at anime boobs. You can read my more in depth review here if you're interested (spoiler free review).

Moonlight

2 hours playtime, 12 of 12 achievements

I have to confess, I had finished typing this post before even starting this game. And then, I went on SG and encountered the Space Cat. Since I refused to let the backlog win, I checked my list of wins for something fast and that I felt like playing. I had been wanting to play this one for a while, so it was perfect. I beat it in a little more than an hour (the rest being idled time to get the last card) but it was really a cute plateformer with beautiful pixel art & relaxing music. I recommend it if you have it sitting in your library or got a key in a bundle.

This is the Police, another game I can’t touch for being an achievement hunter. Everything else about the game is so fitting for me though, which is why it’s really upsetting that I can’t go near it.

Sounds like you got a lot more done than I did despite the real life stuff keeping you busy. Congratulations ^^

EvilBlackSheep

It’s a shame because the game itself is really entertaining at least it was right up my alley. Also some people on the steam forums were complaining because the very grindy cheevos were added afterwards with no new content ingame. I don’t think I’ll go for them honestly they sound too tedious.

uguleley

Hah, I like how you didn’t let your backlog win this month! Moonlight looks like a nice, short game that helped you out. I remember reading good things about it here before, and I enjoy casual platformers so I see zero reasons why I wouldn’t enjoy it. I swear I had it in my wishlist, but apparently not..

how has March been treating you?

Same as you, been having a lot less time for games this month. I haven’t started to prepare an update post, either. :/ This weekend I have at least a bit more time for gaming and I’ve planned to spend it on my PS3 for a change, as I got PS+ for one month. I should have enough time to at least finish ICO this weekend and Shadow of the Colossus later before my sub expires in a couple of weeks. :)

EvilBlackSheep

I admit I almost had a panic moment when I saw the space cat, thanks for short games XD It is really nice and relaxing, nothing too challenging. If you like those casual plateformer, I recommend Mandagon if you haven’t tried it yet, it’s a free game but it’s really neat.

It seems like march’s been a busy month IRL for a lot of people. It’s nice to play a bit on console too once in a while, I’m really trying to resist getting a PS4 for Horizon lately, but it’ll make a dent in my budget, plus add to the backlog. Ico was really a great game, and Shadow of the Colossus looks amazing (I haven’t had a chance to play it though), have fun :)

uguleley

I played Mandagon earlier last year, I think Akantha featured it in one of her posts once. I agree, it’s a really neat game and a soothing experience. :)

I’ve recently started to make a list of PS4 exclusives that I want to play. I’ve been hesitant to buy the console, thinking that I wouldn’t find enough interesting games and that I’d regret spending my savings on it. When I’ve gathered a good amount of games on my list, I’ll get the console. I hope the PS4 Pro would get a bit cheaper in a few months..

EvilBlackSheep

Yes, I played it after her post too :) Well Moonlight is kind of in the same category, just a bit longer.

Markdown syntax does not work within HTML. You can use them separately but not together. HTML code for links is 4xmpl <a href=”http://www.steamgifts.com”>Steamgifts</a>

EvilBlackSheep

Oops thanks for pointing it out, I forgot to reread the post after posting. (I tend to type it first in a text file before posting just in case it crashes)

escollo

Tbh, I don’t like that part where I should learn html to make result I would like :(
But whatever. Why didn’t you play Stanley Parable? It’s really short. Just couple of hours.

EvilBlackSheep

Because I made the mistake of starting Mad Max, and then hours went by. Will do soon though, because of your recent recommendation :)

Oh, and HTML is really not that hard or scary, you should have a go at it.

EvilBlackSheep

Thank you! The banner is a recropped screenshot from Mad Max if that’s what the pretty was about :3

J/k I like the post format:)

Totally stole the post format from TopDeer a few months back :3

Hellooo fellow assassin!! :3 how are you doing? :p

how has March been treating you?

Well, I can easily say that it treated you better than me hahah I managed to play 5 short games, 3 free games (The Plan, Half Life A Place in the West and Transmission Element 120) and last but not least, DOOM. Most of my time was consumed by replaying and going to 100% Middle Earth Shadows of Mordor and I also decided to replay DMC Devil May Cry to get 100% got it last night :p. Sometimes I wonder if I should go back to my old rules as I feel like I’m not doing a good progress :p

Despite being busy, you did a good progress in my opinion and well, we can’t always win our fight, even more with life stuff happening. But May April is here!! Hope we all can slay some games of our backlog! :D
Congratulations with all the games you played. Can’t say much about them because I don’t own any of them D: Moonlight looks so cute though :3

PS: loving your Mad Max screenshots!! Every game should have a screenshot feature. I got hooked with this feature after play Middle Earth :p

EvilBlackSheep

Fine thank you :3

Botanicula and Machinarium are so lovely <3 Plus, Doom, Shadow of Mordor and DMC are nothing to be shy of, they’re all very big game especially to 100%!! Congrats :D What were your old rules? Where you using batches? (Also are you having fun? If so, then all is good, isn’t it?)

And May’s not here yet silly, it’s April :p As for slaying some game, I’ll do my best :3 I won Nier Automata and promised to play it within the month, so that’s next, but I’m currently loosing myself in MadMax. Sooooo many sidequests… and screenshots to take. I share your opinion, that screenshot mode should be mandatory, it’s so cool.

Douglas

They are lovely, indeed <3 I had so much fun playing them and they are beautiful! :3
Yees, they are long games. I’m proud I could manage to complete Middle and DMC :DD well, I was using batches and I couldn’t play anything else (except already finished games and puzzles games (or games without a story). Yeees, I’m having fun. I had before too, but now it feels better because I have more options to choose :D you’re right, I’ll keep what I’m currently doing - thanks!!

Hahahaha I kinda totally skipped this month!! LOL my bad :P - Wow Congratulations winning Nier. It looks a great game!! Can’t wait to read your thoughts about it and take a lot of screenshots!! :3
Oh, keep working on these quests and eventually you’ll finish them all! I believe in you!! \o/

EvilBlackSheep

I’ve tried the batches method but I can’t stick to it, because sometimes between the time I picked the games and the time i came to play them, I wasn’t feeling like that genre or something, and it was feeling tedious. Instead now I have a few games started at the time (generally: One “big” game that only runs on the desktop, one lighter that runs on the laptop and a third one that is more of a side game (ie, not story based that I can play while watching a movie or a tv show)). When I finish one, I pick whatever fits the mood at that time. It works better for me so far, because like you said that gives me more choice. It’s not like I’m lacking of backlog anyway -____-

Thanks, I was extremely excited as it’s one of the game that hyped me the more recently. Don’t worry, your activity feed will be spammed soon (after i’m done spamming with Mad Max :p)
