November 2021 report
I have beaten Prey for the second time and it was quite fun with the other set of skills, at the beginning challenging, but later I was really powerful. Now only the run without any skills remains. But before that I will check the Mooncrash as to take a rest from the main game.
My second run doubled my time, because I have checked every tiny space for any loot or hidden message yet again. But the third run will be a quick rush.
Enough of small talks and now to the actual assassinations! Good luck in a new month and enjoy your games! Also happy holidays and Merry Christmas. :3
I would say that Pyre is a rather underrated gem from the Supergiants, although it has very positive reviews on Steam. I believe that many players missed important info about Pyre. It's a visual novel in the first place, heavily concentrated on lore, characters and story. The action in sports like battles is just a secondary element. I was also surprised by it being a visual novel, but I wasn't disappointed. Right on the contrary. I have fallen in love.
This game is very complex and everything in it has its purpose. There is a meaning to how the story unfolds, what exact information you learn, what characters you meet… maybe you won't be able to see it during your first playthrough, but the end should make it clear and eventually all the other playthroughs… because there is still a lot to see and I will come back many times for sure.
I don't want to spoil you the story, because it's truly amazing and filled with plot twists which always force me to change my plan… I can say that we get exiled to the Downside, a horrid place without any means of returning, meant for the worst criminals, delinquents and offenders of the Commonwealth. There, on wide empty plains, we are found lost, alone and almost broken by a trio of other exiles, each one of them different in species, size, personality and with different motivation in their hearts. They make us an offer, because there is a way out of this place, although it's not commonly known… not that we can exactly decline as that would mean our, probably quick, demise in the Downside wilderness. We accept and offer them our skills then, namely reading as it was banned a long time ago in the Commonwealth, because only the Reader can uncover the secrets hidden in the Book of Rites… book that holds the information on how can one obtain their freedom… and even something more.
We board their old wagon, which had seen better times lifetime ago, and following the stars we set on an adventure looking for other suitable exiles to be able to unite and to fight for a better future not just for us, but for all the others.
Rites are the action parts of the game. I would describe it as a mix of basketball and American football. There are three players on each side, the main goal is to grab a ball and toss it into enemy fire. Winner is the one who extinguishes the opponent's fire first. Fights are short, fast paced and if you are not careful you can lose in a blink of an eye (especially on a harder difficulty). As you progress through the story you recruit new characters into your “squad", each have a different cast of abilities and more importantly also behave completely differently on the field. You are always given an opportunity to try them out, but it can be a challenge to master them properly. The ones who participate in the fight gain enlightenment (a lot of experience), those who are on the bench gain inspiration (next time they participate in the fight they level up faster). And here comes the catch. The ultimate goal is to get free, but only one can leave this place once he is deemed worthy and you are going to choose which one it is, from the three most enlightened. You will send away one of your exiles, never to return. So the one you play most with, your best one will be gone and you have to play with the others… never forget that.
This concept adds another level of immersion, because you are now torn apart by the choice waiting for you. Will you allow them freedom or will you deny it? But you and your crew aren't the only one seeking their freedom, there are others you have to fight with and yet again they all have different desires and motivations to go back. Nothing is easy and maybe sacrificing your own freedom to offer them chance for their own may be the stars will.
The cast of the characters you meet in the game is big and pretty diverse. Their personalities are excellently portrayed and all of them are very much likable, some of them have written deeply into my heart. There is no standard voice acting as no one is speaking in English, except for The Voice (tiptop Logan Cunningham), instead they have an "extra new" language. And they only speak in short lines, few words, sights… but that's all you need. It's so amazing, it fits the characters so much. I wouldn't want it any other way. You can also open info about all of the characters in the game, learn about their past… and in the end even about their future.
In addition to a great story and characters we have bright, vivid, colorful graphics full of tiny details, it's a joy to look at. Next thing that is creating a great fitting atmosphere throughout the whole game is the soundtrack, which is exceptional! Darren Korb is truly ingenious. His music is full of emotions and perfectly captures every situation and character. I really like the soundtrack in Alan Wake, especially the songs which tell the story plot. I have found it very clever. Darren Korb, and the Supergiants, simply brought it to perfection, because their storytelling songs bring me goosebumps every time I hear them.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone who loves great compelling stories with beautiful visuals and soundtrack; you won't be disappointed. Be prepared that you are going to read, do not skip or rush through it, the story is the important thing, not the action.
There is only one thing I find unsatisfactory about the game - I would love to be able to romance one of the characters. ^^
In this installment of The Walking Dead series we play as Javier Garcia who is on the run from the apocalypse with his brother's wife and his two children, boy and girl. Hard times are taking its toll on everyone and their family is no exception, two adolescents are not making it any easier for sure. As Javi tries his best to protect his family, he also needs to keep his relationship with Kate within limits, offer the kids some needed space and scavenge for supplies. Hard choices are waiting for him right around the corner though and it won't be too long before their relatively peaceful time go to hell.
As the situation around Javier's family escalates he meets our well known figure Clementine. Although the meeting isn't going well for Javi at the beginning and Clem is rather withdrawn towards him, the necessity of the upcoming situations requires them to cooperate. Even more now because their past is slowly coming back to bite them pretty hard in the back and trustworthy companions are always hard to find. Securing their safe future is going to be difficult and it won't go without making painful sacrifices.
I don't mind the change of perspective from Clem on another survivor, although at the beginning I was afraid that she wouldn't be there at all. In the end it worked pretty well. I liked Javier, for me it was very easy to connect to him. With Kate it was harder, but I understand her motives, kids were fine. Clementine is of course perfect and it's very nice to see her growing up through the series, she is so matured. There are a lot of other characters you are going to meet, whose lives you are going to save or destroy… pretty standard routine. Without spoiling you much I can say that there is one very likeable character and although you don't know anything about him you can tell right away that he is a good guy. Because you know, Garrus Vakarian can't be a bad boy. ;D So yeah, one of the characters is voiced by his actor and I believe it was my first time hearing him outside Mass Effect! And it was pretty much distracting for me, because I have completely switched to Mass Effect mode and didn't paid much attention to what he was actually saying, tehehehe~ ^^
So I have really enjoyed The New Frontier, graphics and music are good, same with the voice acting. The illusion of choices is nicely done and I had a feeling of them having an impact, unlike with Michonne. Sometimes the story feels a little bit over the edge, but it's still acceptable. There are four ways Javier's story may end, yet there is apparently no continuation of his story, so it's not really necessary… but it's still nice to see, I think?
An okay hidden object game about a young girl, Laura, getting trapped in her dreams by evil Sandman who aims to capture her there forever and come to our world in her stead to wreak a havoc upon it. Only way to help Laura is to succumb to her subconsciousness and fight the nightmares haunting her. Through her dreams we will learn more about her childhood and mystery powers she apparently posses. Sandman seems to be one step ahead of us though, but as we progress and collect bits of broken dream catcher Laura gets stronger. Will it be enough to surpass the Sandman?
So, Dreamscapes is a hidden object game without any hidden object scenes. :D But the mini games and puzzles are actually pretty good. I liked how we went through different dream worlds, they are not too long, although sometimes there’s some backtracking. Bonus story awaits you after the main game, in the same quality.
Graphics are a bit blurred and the voice acting is mediocre, in case of Sandman even horrid. X)
All in all, we have enjoyed it. It was quick and fun.
Dragon clan is yet again planning on ruling the world, this time with the help of dragons from the long lost Buried kingdom. Our friend, who discovered its location, gets kidnapped by the villains. So we follow them deep below the sea to find the entrance to the kingdom, where we uncover their devilish plan. With the help of little dragon and local citizens we have to stop them and free all dragons from the tyranny of Dragon clan leader.
Pretty standard HOG from Artifex Mundi. Story was sometimes pretty wild. When I am thinking about it now I am not exactly sure why they kidnapped that friend of ours, not that they needed her for anything… anyway, puzzles are not too hard and hidden object scenes are varied. There are collectibles and morphing objects to be found - yep, we missed the LAST one, so we had to play through it one more time. And let me tell you that the last morphing object looked like a decoration that belonged on the screen in the first place and its change was very very very subtle. But other than that the morphing objects were easy to spot as they had rather quick changing sequences. As always, the bonus story opens after completing the main game.
This time, our heroine and the best of bests agent of Griffins, Sarah visits her mother in some research facility hidden deep in a jungle. But as it wouldn't be fun without anyone getting kidnapped, voila, mom gets kidnapped! What a horror. In the meantime Sarah learns that the Dragon clan is yet again behind it. They are also doing experiments on the Flower of life, or what was its name, as they plan to turn all people into slave puppets and only Sarah can stop them! She has to cut her way through the wilderness, save incompetent members from Griffin order, save cute little animal helpers from misfortune and for once and for all to deal with the Dragon clan! Honestly, they should really know their limits by now… I don't want to spoil you, but nope.
We have enjoyed the scenery change and the graphics are truly pretty. HO scenes are varied and puzzles are not too hard, with a mysterious artifact at our disposal we have sets of puzzles to perform and they were fun to do. Story is okay with some plot holes, but that's to be expected I guess. Collectibles and morphing objects are again to be found, this time without any problem.
Your guess is right. The Dragon clan is yet again plotting against Griffins. This time they have uncovered a magical book which holds the spirit of a dangerous witch named Odessa. Sarah learns that only particular artifacts can be used against her and that they are scattered around the world, with the first being hidden in her new house, convenient. So Sarah sets on her quest and with all the artifacts she will also uncover hidden secrets from the past of Griffin and Dragon clans!
Yet again a quick HOG from Artifex Mundi with very nice graphics, varied hidden object scenes and good, not so hard puzzles. When using your artifacts you have to solve meta puzzles which are rather nice. Collectibles and morphing objects are also around. This time though I was pretty dissatisfied as the change takes a very long time, it's no fun like that, I want back my quick changes. Oh, the collectibles actually open short info about certain characters, items and animals. But it took far too many clicks to look at it…
In this game I have often felt lost and uncertain on what to do next, not sure why as the other games were rather clear. Maybe my mind just got clouded by playing three of them so close together.
Big thanks for my SG Wins!

I believe that many players missed the important info about Pyre. It’s a visual novel in the first place[…]
There is your answer on why it is underrated. VNs are a niche genre populated by infantile anime romance. I personally had them filter out in Steam for a long time missing out some good titles because of it.
Visual novels aren’t just about romance though. Those who filter it out completely miss it, yeah, but those who played other games by Supergiants and play Pyre are mostly not satisfied with it, which surprised me to be honest. Every game from them is different, but always concentrated on storytelling and they do a great job in it. Just this time there is a lot of reading… superb reading.
