New year, old me! (With some updates and version number increased)

So I was thinking, and I thought it would be nice to shake up my review-game a bit, and also get a bit better overview of what I play - even as a plan.
I don’t want to make too big plans, because they usually fail. I don’t want to have undefined plans, because they are hard to grasp, and also fail.

For now, it’s just that I want to play more strategy games, and more sci-fi. For some reason I play very little sci-fi, compared to how much I love the genre in books, movies, series and even in games.
The plan is harder to define, as game length can totally mess up plans, but I guess I’ll make it work somehow.
The plan at the beginning is one sci-fi game a month, and a tactics/strategy (not necessarily pure) game every 2 month - or 12 and 6 in a year, respectively.

I’m curious how this little experiment will turn out

What sci-fi game are you thinking of for Jan?
and what strategy for Jan-Feb?

adam1224

I’ve already played Legacy of Dorn: Herald of Oblivion, a WH40k (more or less)text adventure, but also been eyeing System Shock for a long while. Maybe that. But Star Craft is also on the map, as a child I loved to mess around with cheat codes an just killing everything, it would be nice to play while properly learning the story.
Or another (borderline?)option could be Shadowrun Hong Kong or Dragonfall as tactical RPG, especially both being SG wins ^^

OC/DC

Yeah Star Craft would fill both requirements quite nicely, and a Shadowrun game too, technically. System Shock is also a solid choice (original or remake?)
But bringing up WH40k makes me realise that nearly every game in that world would fit the sci-fi side, and a fair amount are strategy too
Lots of good options here..

Original (Enchanced Edition) for System Shock!

Kyrrelin

Ha, what a coincidence, I completed it not so long ago and I can only recommend it! ;)

Some unsolicited thoughts and ideas on what to play in the sci-fi or tactic/strategy categories (in no particular order):

  • Metro Exodus, Ghostrunner: Well regarded game, SG win
  • Remember Me: One of my favorite games of all time. The only fighting-type game I’ve played. But great story and gameplay, IMO.
  • Astroneer: SG win
  • I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream: fairly short, a classic
  • CAYNE: If you liked STASIS, you should play CAYNE
  • Subsurface Circular: I liked this short little game. Small time investment.
  • Dreamfall Chapters: Simply my favorite game of the genre of all time. But I played the first two– which haven’t aged as well. You may or may not have.
  • Eliza: Loved this little game. If the description (store page) appeals to you, then you’ll probably like the game.
  • Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition– great turn-based strategy game. Long.
  • King’s Bounty: The Legend: classic TBS. Kind of long and repetitive; don’t feel compelled to finish it.

BTW, you have lots of games in your Never Played category that have lots of playtime and achievements (even a couple at 100%).

adam1224

Those are great recommendations, I started Ghostrunner before the Christmas Campaign of 2023 (visiting everybody within 4 days or so), definitely will continue with it. Also planned to play many of the others, Metro Exodus is a bit further in the future because of the previous games)
Sadly (?) King’s Bounty: Collector’s Pack was an SG win ~8 years ago, an incredibly daunting win that I kind of regret now.

Thanks for the note about the BLAEO list, I intended to leave some unplayed when I barely scratched the surface, but I indeed have a few with pretty high completion rates. I try too many games that I want to return to at some point, and tbh I don’t like the unfinished category, feels like the looming sword of Damocles. I’d rather think of the games as games I started / tried out, that doesn’t have that questioning negativity as being unfinished.

Yep, whatever system works for you, works for you!

Like yourself, started the new year with quite a big plan, but one that I know I can achieve. Take one step at a time. I don’t remember seeing you speak about being a completionist, but looking at your profile you’ve done quite the heavy blows, so that definitely gives you less room to wiggle and play whatever game. Knowing how Strategy games are, they take forever to complete, and I’m fairly certain you can mix the sci-fi genre with it too.

First game that comes to mind is Starcraft II. Not sure if you’ve played it or not.

Good luck and cheers to a new year! 🍻

adam1224

I try to get all achievements in some cases, but it stopped me from having fun too many times back in the day, so I don’t really prioritize achievements, or “full completion”.

Vasharal

Oh good! Then more time to play more games. What Strategies do you have in mind to play?

I am a strategy guy myself, that’s how I started, but again, not sure why I don’t play anymore any RTS as I used to.

adam1224

Just by going RTS, Starcraft, Supreme Commander, Age of Empires 2 (Haven’t had it in my youth), maybe some Age of Mythology (played a LOT in my youth :D), Grey Goo, Rise of Nations, Stellaris, Sins of a Solar Empire, Master of Orion… there are a lot of options, and even more in turn based strategy, 4X or turn-based tactics.

Vasharal

Oh boy, some of them I’ve played, but like you, there’s a few listed I’ve not.
