August 2024

August was busy otherwise but managed still to clear some longer hanging games on my list. Both Crown Trick and Death’s Door have been on radar for a while. Even tried to win them on SG and CT managed to ramp quite many entries without success.

Disco Elysium

This had been on my list for a long time. It is somewhat strange game that brings an unique gaming experience. Choices matter and will impact gameplay in an original way. Game relies heavily on text (which is also spoken) so don't get it if you don't want an (audio) book. World and characters were compelling and the story was good. Really good western style RPG without combat mechanics.

Crown Trick

25.4 hours, 42 of 48 achievements

Turn based system took some time to learn. Game had some smaller UI issues but mostly it was a solid game. Nothing special but overall a good experience.

Heretic's Fork

18.9 hours, 24 of 29 achievements

Tower defense game with card mechanics. For some reason, towers didn't have variety that I kinda expect in games like these. Different characters made slight changes to the gameplay feel but nothing drastic. Theme was interesting and implemented well. Overall an okayish entry.

Death's Door

Somewhat disappointed with this one. For some reason expected more. Story wasn't interesting and neither were the characters. Gameplay was okay but quite basic. Visually the game didn't catch my eye. It was short so at least it didn't try to overextend.

SteamWorld Dig

6.0 hours, 14 of 24 achievements

Simple digging game where depth comes from your Y position and not gameplay. It wasn't bad but have no interest to try the second installment.

Ongoing

Inkbound

ONE PIECE PIRATE WARRIORS 3

I had no idea Heretic’s Fork was a tower defense game, from the store images I just said “Right, cannibalism.” and left it at that.

Pretty simple tower defense. Map is always similar: your core is at the center and towers are placed automatically. It is more about selecting which bonuses to use hence the card game aspect.

FWIW, I enjoyed Steamworld Dig 2 much better than the first installment - I reviewed SWD2 last month and SWD this month

Thanks for the tip. Unlikely to get SD2 at least for now, though. Way too many other games to finish. But good to know that it is an improvement.

it’s on Gamepass atm - probably won’t rotate out for 9+ months
