January 2018 Report - Back in Action

Okay, i’ve been away from the site for about a year, it doesn’t mean I haven’t finished any games, in fact i finished quite a lot.
The other day, steam messed up all the categories for the games in my library, so I decided to come back and record wich were finished and wich weren’t…

Since 2018 started, I finished two short games already:

  • Seasons after Fall

    6 hours playtime

    21 of 21 achievements

  • Maize

    3 hours playtime

    no achievements

Seasons After Fall Is a short puzzle platformer in which you control a fox (dominated by some kind of spirit) in search of renewing the cycle of the seasons and performing the “Ritual of the Seasons”… I got to say the game is not bad, but i wouldn’t recommend it unless you are really itching for a game in the genre or grab it really cheap. Don’t get me wrong, it looks and sounds great, but the platforming is bland, the puzzles are almost nonexistent and the general gameplay is boring. The controls are super floaty, and you’ll have to retry some platforming, not because of dificulty, but lack of responsiveness. Also you’ll spend lot of time backtracking, it’s almost like the name should have been: Bactracking Simulator…

Maize is a simple first person walking simulator, with a nonsensical story about gubernamental experiments on sentient corn… It’s not bad, but it’s not great either.

I loved Seasons After Fall, I’m sorry you didn’t like it. Did you have a favorite music? Mine was the bird singing for that one achievement.

Welcome back to the site! I’m also not as into Seasons After Fall as I wanted to be. I won it on SG and it’s just hard for me to get into it. It’s very beautiful though.

That sounds like it would be even more fun to play when drunk xD

I think that is the intended way to play :p

I liked Seasons After Fall a lot myself, but I agree it’s not for everyone. Backtracking is because of the genre - metroidvania, it’s one of the traits. I didn’t get the floaty feeling though, and had no issues with platforming. Overall it’s for someone looking for a pleasant looking, non violent, charming game, and the expectations need to be adjusted accordingly. :)

I had a meticulous category system on steam once, but after one of client’s hiccups all of that vanished. I wasn’t pleased, but I did not have time or desire to recreate all that, so now I just resort to what I have on BLAEO, it’s simple but serviceable.

Welcome back & congrats on your undocumented progress ;) Visit often - at least stuff you write here won’t disappear :)

I know it’s kind of a Metroidvania, but it lacks appeal in the backtracking… look back to Metroid, and when you backtrack there’s usually new interesting stuff… here i didn’t find any of that (I know you back track with new abilities, but then you have to go back in again… Not saying it’s a bad game, but can’t recommend it…

Regarding categories, i’m doing Finished/Unfinished in Steam and will update more in here…
