I like it when games want you to break them
Finally finished Slay the Spire, and yes, it is as good as all the nerds say it is. As you can see, it took me many hours to finally call it beaten, but during that time it such a strong hold on my waking thoughts - other parts of my life may have suffered a bit during, but don't tell them i said that
Not a huge CCG guy growing up, mostly for financial reasons, but cards are nearly fundamental to games (in general) and i always enjoyed playing them, collectible or otherwise. I did jump on Hearthstone when it came out, and spent a few years trying to keep up with that, until eventually burning myself off of it during lock-down. At some point during that Slay the Spire must've emerged, and cards in digital games have mostly exploded since then
Anyway, enough of (personal) history. For those who don't know, StS is a card game rogue-like, you start with a basic deck of ten or so cards, and can add a shiny new card to it after each victory against the various enemies of the Spire, on your way to the top. Other traditional rogue-like elements are here too; character-changing relics, treasure rooms with free goodies, shops with (hopefully) the things you're looking for, risk-reward elite enemies, and bosses ending each act
While there are common card mechanics across the board, each playable character has their own suit of cards, and embodies a broadly different win strategy - having within a few deck archetypes you can build towards (or mix and match). They're introduced in what feels like simplest-to-hardest to understand, but most importantly they all feel quite different to play (some more unique than others perhaps)
Took me a while to realise that i needed to resist the urge to add new shinies to my deck, as having a smaller more focused deck is often better than an overall more powerful deck, that's harder to find the things you need, when you need them (just a basic tip from me).
Good good stuff. Now i want to play every other card game in my library..

Oh yessssssssssss Slay the Spire is THE game. What did you consider as “Beaten” i.e. what made you stop playing the game? I’m currently on A10 with the Silent and much lower Ascensions with the other characters, and I guess I would like to beat A20 at least once with each character, without the Heart kill. So, so far away ahahah

Well i just followed my SH points rule again, but that turned out to be completing Act 4 with each character, which i think is a pretty fitting place to call it.
I only went to Ascension 2 with the Ironclad i think, but i’m going for easier achievements before trying to climb the Ascensions 🥲

For sure, beating Act 4 with all characters already require skill, as luck alone won’t carry you through the heart fights. It’s a good resting point as any. I was playing every day before I beat Act 4 with all characters, and after that I started playing maybe one or two games a week, but it has been a few years that I’ve kept that pace and the game still holds for me :)
Any favorite characters among the roster, or strategies that worked super well for you? Sorry but I can’t help, I get too excited with StS hahaha

I fully understand your excitement :D
I like all the characters, but i probably do the best with Ironclad; it’s too easy to build an invincible position with stacking block and strength.
The Silent i actually found the hardest to beat Act 3 the first time; i tried out poison and shiv builds (mostly for achievements) but once i found Blur plus discard it was over. I think i lucked out a bit with the Shuriken and/or Kunai as well, so after the first turn or so i just steam-rolled.
I also like slowly building an orb engine with the Defect, but it’s tricky to get going; i’m pretty sure i used an upgraded Fission to beat the Heart in the end.
The Watcher might be my favourite though, just because the energy mechanics mean you have to actually think hard on those crucial turns. For her, i really wanted to get a Mantra deck going, but after RNG kept refusing me, i started learning how to swap stances effectively, and to actually use the retain mechanic.
So many good runs though; even building silly decks and getting smushed by an elite is fun. I’m very excited for the sequel

OK so honestly, I played two games with The Watcher. It’s crazy to me that I have 70+ hours in the game and I barely understand what people mean by ‘scrying’ your deck, or switching stances. It’s what I love about this game - it has enough depth in parts of it that you can ignore 75% of the characters and still have an incredibly good game.
Of my 70+ hrs, probably 50+ are with the Silent. I always resist the urge to build a shiv deck, but gosh, when it works, it works so beautifully hahaha I love how many options for deck manipulation the Silent has. Ironchad was the first I played with, when I really didn’t understand the game, so somehow it didn’t really gel with me, but I introduced the game to a friend recently and he had an outrageous Strength build that made me reconsider the Chad hahaha
I actually ended up having more fun with Defect Claw and Power builds than orbs. I always felt an orb play a bit stale, as you mentioned. I would frequently get stuck in a defensive position, unable to defeat the enemies and just being pummeled into submission. Powers are punished hard by the Awakened One in Act 3, but if you’re lucky to face one of the other two bosses, then Creative AI is such a good card to have haha
The ultimate compliment!
