Got this mobile game when it went free. Heard quite some good things about it, so one day I decided to play it when I was commuting back home.

It's got quite simple mechanic, which is basically optical illusion sorta thing where your character would be to move to the physically impossible to get to platform when they align according to your camera. I enjoyed it a lot. Not too hard, and I can figure out by trying and thinking a bit, but damn does it hurt my brain. lol It's like my brain just can't function and process that illogical thing for too long so I was starting to have a bit of a headache. Like when you've been thinking too hard and for too long that you feel like your brain is inflating and having this pressure on your temple.

Now I'll say this: I have no idea what the story in this game is about. Something about the princess stealing things and then returning them and stuff. It's all very confusing and vague honestly. And why did they forgive her? I thought they are all very angry at her. And I kinda came up with my own explanation of the princess being a thief that steals a lot of alien civilization's core, which caused all of them to die out, which is why there's always a ghost floating at the end. Every map is one civilization's monument, marking what's left of it. Spoiler ahead: The princess' civilization is destroyed and all the people got scattered to the monuments either because all the cores are too strong or some other civilization decided to intervene and cursed the princess, turning her into a human. In order to change back to her former self and to reunite her people, princess decided to return all the cores to the monument in order to atone for her crimes. So......yeah, that's everything I've got so far. xD

The main story's puzzle is quite easy, so if you want real challenge you should play IDA's Dream. It's a short adventure featuring several puzzle maps in one, and really have some creative ways and is super fun~

Totem is sooooo cute btw. When the level ended I thought I'm never gonna meet him and I'm like: "Don't chase me you're gonna drown and disappear in the sea aaaa"......but he came back! Yay. :D

So hmm.....this is kinda a silly game. xD I just randomly came across it on steam front page cuz I played clicker games so steam recommended it. Surprisingly it's not that bad.

First of all, it's free. That's why I tried it out. It's free, astats says I can 100% it in 1.5 hours, it's a clicker/idle game and I really need something to freshen up on that part. So why not give it a try? I did use auto-clicker and a guide where there's a sorta cheatsy way to get achievements quicker. The helper's lines are quite cute and funny, the joke of the slow ass internet speed is fun, and the gameplay is acceptable. One thing that I don't like is the pong game, cuz you gotta get 100 score to unlock an achievement and it's boring. :P But that's ok. I also found the secret pepe and read the dev's reason on making the game. Must say quite nice.

Yet another attempt from me to play these VN-esque games. Unfortunately I might have to accept the fact that I'm not really suitable for this genre. Or maybe I just keep picking bad ones to play, although from the review of this game and Aviary Attorney they seem fairly ok? The problem I encountered is again, the boredom.

Let me first tell you my impression of the first playthrough. Characters are actually quite nice and memorable. They each have their unique traits and personality, and got me liking/rooting for certain characters(George, Garret and Steve) while despising the others(mainly Jolene, but Teddy is also really annoying) I'll list out characters and my thoughts on them the same as I did with The Inner World, since it's the best part of this game imo.

Rita: Our main character. A strong independent woman that needs no men(heehee). She can be a freaking beast, taking out Boars and Jaguar with her trusty frying pan. She can also be a coward and does everything wrong resulting in everyone's death depending on how you play. I still have no clue why when she joined the group, she suddenly became the leader and the center and everyone follows what she says, but I guess story convenience or something. *shrugs*
George: He's just a friendly and optimistic lump that's just really lovely. He's the first character that I really invested in and liked. I think I just always have a soft spot for big fellows with tender feelings. Which makes Jolene even more unbearable.
Jolene: She's just plain annoying. Thinks she's superior to everyone yet she does practically nothing for the team. Spreading hate and talking down on people, even have some devious ideas that she actually acted on. It pains me to agree with her every time when it's needed for an achievement. I wouldn't have saved her from the cave if not for fear of George not leaving in my first playthrough. Her marriage with George is built on a fucking lie! And she doesn't intend to tell him a single thing forever. Even deciding to divorce with George? What a spoiled, entitled woman.
Garret: I didn't really get him at the start, thinking he's a nerdy weird guy. But after some time he really grew on me. Out of the rare silly/funny dialogues, almost all of them were said by him. Maybe he just reminds me of part of myself, but he's a much much nerdier version of that part of myself. He's my favorite character of them all.
Teddy: Eh, he's ok, action wise I guess(unlike Jolene). But, his constant nonsense and negative thoughts in the end really made me dislike him a lot. I just don't want to hear any more stupid conspiracy theories, and they really do drag the morale of people down. He ended up being the first person that died on my first playthrough. Couldn't save him from the cave, though I did try to. However I somewhat did believe in his theory of they are being tested or something, since everything just seemed so coincidental and several people were taken on the plane by a guy that wears suit. We never could find any evidence tho, which is a shame.
Steve: A possible psychopath. lol I think he has some mental issues, most notably depression(possible) and anger issues. A interesting person. The kind of person that I really wanted to help yet I can't seem to find a way. Thus I tried talking to him every night in my first playthrough. Cheering him up and stuff, but I suppose that's not really that helpful when someone has depression. He also have really interesting abilities in things. I sometimes feel like he's even capable of killing someone with his stapler(he probably did, if you leave him with Jolene when out on the raft. )
Mr. Whiskers: This cat is definitely not normal. I know that the first time I saw it. Probably spying on them all. (I suppose Teddy's theories has got to me) Also if the cat blew up with Garret it'll still be alive and a-ok, which is kinda funny. I suppose they didn't make a dead kitty sprite or something, but that made me feel even more creeped out about it.

The characters are great, however the conversations and dialogues are all very plain which is a shame. They don't really tell much emotion. When reading them all I can imagine of is a flat emotionless voice speaking them out loud, which is super out of place when there's emergency things happening on the screen. (there's no voice acting btw in case you couldn't tell. There's only these weird noises made by characters indicating speaking) Another problem is characters do not show emotion. Someone died? "Oh my! *sad face*" then the next second "Let's get this camp started. " Especially with George and Jolene. Granted yes their marriage aren't going that well, but holy crap are they cold-blooded when one of them dies. "My poor Jolene/George......*sad face*" "Let's keep moving. " It just, immediately takes me out of immersion and makes me want to face palm super hard. If it happens with like, Steve reacting to Jolene's death then I can understand, cuz they don't get along, but that's your wife/husband!

Gameplay wise, actually not bad. I'm being the usual myself where I check everything out, and gotta say there's some interesting texts to read on objects. One complaint on this tho is the walking speed. It's not slow, but if I want to check out everything, it takes quite some boring walk time and I get stuck on obstacles a lot, which is a contribution to my boredom I think. Yes, the boredom is still here. I really have no idea why. Perhaps it's because the story is not that engaging? Or the characters aren't that appealing? Come to think of it, technically you could also call To the Moon and Finding Paradise VN-esque, yet I don't have such problems with them both. Perhaps a bit in A Bird Story, but that's mainly cuz I already know the story. I really wanna like these kinda games, since I think I should be able to cuz I like story rich games, but I just can't. :<

And now, after an additional 8 something hours playtime just to get all the other achievements, I'll tell you what my thoughts of this game is. I'm fucking sick of it! There's day rewind system(thank god) where you can rewind to a previous day of the playthrough you're currently on and continue from there, and I also used a guide to minimize my effort. But there's no skip dialogue option!!! I have to click a. lot. of. times. Arg is that boring and annoying. And if I misclick(since I'm clicking so much to skip the texts) and chose a wrong option and it happens to be a checkpoint option, I'll have to restart the entire day and click even more! >:( Also after so many playthroughs the charm of the characters and the story just kinda, faded, since the game actually follows a set up event, and multiple characters will end of saying the same dialogue cuz one needs to replace the other for the same event to happen. It felt very.....cheap when I saw that happen. What's the point of me even killing someone if another person is just gonna take over his text? Sure there will be slight differences(or some events will be skipped) but the main endings never change, meaning that at the end, nothing matters that much(*angrily looks at Life is Strange*). It's a character's death, and you only really have 6, so shouldn't it be more significant? It angers me the most when I see George taking over Jolene's event, asking if an accident should happen. That's completely OOC! Jolene would cuz that's how she is, but George would not do that. That's not the George I know cuz throughout all the playthroughs he has always been this optimistic, uplifting and caring person.

The mini story with game devs and such are meh. Drags on way too long and not really that humorous tbh. Overall, the game is kinda eh. Grinding for achievements subtracted a one whole point from it, and thus made it not really enjoyable.

My first ever HOG game~Reminds me of the good ol' days playing I Spy as a kid. It's actually one of the first videogames I played on PC(I normally don't consider the ones I played as a small small kid my first few PC games since they didn't get me into PC gaming, but in actuality I played I Spy, a random undersea adventure game with fishes as characters, and Harry Potter spell casting game thingy among some other small games way before what I would consider the first PC games I discovered which are Minecraft and LoL. Ofc there's also the fact that my mom didn't really let me play much since I was born with slight astigmatism). My mom got me it(I think actually pirated it, since I remembered that it came in a copied CD) to help me learn English. :3

One thing I did notice was that I'm not as patient as when I was a kid. Perhaps it's because nowadays we live in an information explosion era and we're used to things going lightning fast. I don't have nearly enough patience to play Pokemon, Harvest Moon. HOG kinda fits in that sorta category, but it's better since there's less unnecessary delays, but it did made the actual HOG sessions a bit less enjoyable, especially when I have only one object left and I can't for the life of me find it(was doing no hints run for the first playthrough)

And OMG this game is a freaking horror game. Damn steam with its missing horror tags. >.> Yes, from me saying this game is a horror you can see how bad I am with horror games. It's the most cheesy ones too! The jump scaredy, cheap atmospheric background music kind. It's like, I will kinda know like: "There's probably an incoming jump scare. " but I still gets scared. In the end, after turning off the music and putting on my own, it felt much better(I still got scared a few times after that, but it's less creepy). The story is just not engaging enough for me to endure and actually kinda like it like Puzzle Agent, and the Legates aren't that scary. It's just the cheap jump scares. ;-;

Now yes, I will talk about its story. Coincidence much? Not logical at all? This story is just kinda silly. Characters are one-dimensional, lines are cheesy AF, and the animation oh lord, is bad. I legit laughed the first time a character spoke cuz the lip sync is so bad. xD Oh and the ending plot twist is not really that shocking since you can kinda guess it, but what I don't get is how did we turn it around? It's like, OH PLOT TWIST, here's a thing that you press and press again and then you defeated the bad guy good job *clap clap*. Like, wat? 0-0

Overall, this game is ok. Story is meh, gameplay is ok, characters are laughable but I guess they work. Oh and idk if it's just me, but the HOG sections in bonus chapter was very laggy. Only HOG sections, others are fine, which is weird. Also, I totally ship Greg and Robert. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

OH MY GOD, LOOK AT THIS KNIGHT

Found this game from steam's discovery queue. Since it's a really short game, easy to 100% and free I decided to try it out.

At first I thought this game is gonna be a hero RPG thingy since I saw the screenshot of our main character hitting chickens with a wooden sword. A Zelda meme I suppose. I was quite surprised that it was completely not that. It's just a silly story about a silly person that believes he's a knight that helps people, even tho he causes destruction. Pretty nice little story. The best part is when I went back to find the 3 secrets for achievements, that rock made me laugh so much. Idk why cuz it's not like the dialogues are anything special, but they just made me laugh. x3

I played the game with a controller since it said to play with it. Controls are kinda meh, hitting with RB and you need to change direction with right joystick is a bit awkward, but manageable. What I really don't like is the screen bobbing when you move and attack. It made me quite nauseous, and I'm not the type that get nauseous with videogames that easily(unlike my mom) so that's pretty serious stuff. Especially when it comes to the drunk part, omg my eyes and my brain hurts. So that's my biggest gripe about this game. Other than that a short and nice experience.

Also found this from the discovery queue. It looked kinda interesting visual wise just from the get go, that's why I downloaded it.

I know nothing about the game beforehand and only knew about it being a 48 hours game jam project from the credits after finishing the game. Have to say, it's kinda bad. The story is bland, predictable and full of unfunny meme jokes. The gameplay has the unbearable long text dialogue that you can't skip, the long walking animation that I dislike the most in point and click games, needless backtracking(made worse by the walking) and puzzles that are hard to figure out(made worse by the walking yet again). Managed to find two problems in my 50 minutes playthrough. One is that after alt-tabbing and coming back, the background(except characters) turned into black screen. The other is when you enter the elevator and press the same floor that you're on, it doesn't care and still plays the elevator going up/down animation as if you're on another floor. It's just a boring and clunky game.

I was actually really looking forward to the sequel of Puzzle Agent since it left me with a surprising good impression with the horror element. I was really disappointed however since it did not met my expectation and lacks in some aspects that made the previous one great.

The puzzles are not as good as the first one, especially several number sequence puzzles that frantically you can only guess them. Like, how am I suppose to notice it's the number sequence of "pi"? I didn't and don't need to memorize that since all I needed was "3.14" or at most "3.14159" to calculate stuff. I did enjoy some of the other ones, but there's not much innovation from the first one.

Let's talk about story. It's the biggest disappointment. It completely lost the charm of the first game where there's really impressive atmosphere and creepiness build up that makes you feel on edge most of the times, and the final reveal is also unnerving and left you wanting more. Honestly I wouldn't be unhappy if they just left it there. The mystery that never gets solved. But noooooo, they had to make a sequel. Sure, I can dig it if it has the same feel. But noooooo, it had to be some bullshit government stuff. You could have came up with far more interesting plots for the Hidden People, like if they're aliens and are capturing people to do experiments to figure out how human works. Too cheesy? Maybe go with they are eating those human's brains that they have trained with puzzles since well stimulated brains has more nutrition or shit like that. But noooooo, they had to be fucking searching for home. I guess seeing the innkeeper and Bjorn being suspicious and then the astronaut at the start got my hopes up. I thought it's gonna add a new mystery and creepy aspect. But alas, I'd say I would actually like them to not explain anything at all. Bring more mystery for us to guess and speculate on.

On a good note, the voice acting is still pretty good. Really enjoyable. Innkeeper is as lovely as always, and bigfoot is so adorable omg. xD The way it roars, stops and then just walks away. :3

This is why sometimes sequels should have never been made. :< Still a decent game, but I suppose hype and expectations really does effect one's ability to enjoy a game.

Woo! It’s summer vacation!!! Time to step up my backlog killing game. :D Oh and, I’m still looking for clicker game suggestions so if anyone has some feel free to drop them in the comments. :3 See you next month~

Fenchurch

By clicker do you mean point and click/adventure? A lot of the Daedalic stuff is good if you haven’t played any of that? The Deponia series, Memoria and Night of the Rabbit are three that I have played and enjoyed.

86maylin

I meant idle/clicker game. :P I’m getting burned out of the same old 4 clicker games I’ve been playing for ages, so I’m looking for some fresh ones. :3

As for point and click games, I have kinda a love and hate relationship with it(just like with VN). I wanted to like them, and they often have really nice character building and stories, but I just can’t get myself around the things I don’t like about the formula(slow walking speed, back tracking). I definitely will still play them tho, and hoping I can find one that’s perfect for me. x3

Fenchurch

I honestly didn’t know that was a genre!

Vito

Lucky you, I still have a few weeks ahead of me until summer vacation ;(

Happy backlog killing, I hope you finish a lot of great games in your vacation :)

86maylin

Good luck on your finals!
And thanks. :)

Vito

Thank you! :)

stef

I had the same thoughts about Puzzle Agent 2!

I’m dipping my hand into some VN’s lately. I’ve extremely picky and have only found a few I like. Dyscourse wasn’t one of them. It’s just to generic and the story/dialogue doesn’t grab me at all.

Hopefully you’ll have better luck in your next batch of games!

86maylin

I read your review before playing so kinda already have an idea that it won’t be as good, but I didn’t expect it to be that bad. :/

Ah, VNs. I really wanted to like them, but it’s just really hard. :o Dyscourse’s only strong part is the character(ofc that could also be because I easily bond with characters). Other than that it’s plain and boring, which is a shame since the art style is pretty cool.

Thank you!
