Batman - The Telltale Series

A decent Telltale entry. If you enjoy the newer Telltale games and like Batman, you’ll probably enjoy this. You also play as Bruce Wayne which was interesting and different from any other batman game I know. A bit heavier on quick-time events. And I liked that you get to romance catwoman (not sure whether this is really a spoiler).

The Walking Dead: A New Frontier

It wasn’t that bad although maybe not as good as the first two. Not that many likable characters with most of the older ones now dead. As usual, choices don’t really matter. Will still play the final game for Clem.

To The Moon

Really loved this game and recommend it to anyone who has it sitting in their backlog (most of you). It’s not that long with a really good story. I was surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did and it might be one of my favorite games. Playing Rakuen now and looking forward to the sequal.

fault - milestone one

Really liked this one as well and it’s my first completed visual novel. Recommend it to interested in trying visual novels. Looking forward to the second game and am also now looking for any visual novel recommendations.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

A great GTA-style game involving Chinese Triads and American police. Fun gameplay with combat being centered around martial-arts hand-to-hand combat. Also had a fairly decent story. Would love a sequel as I don’t think there are many games like this. Still have a lot to finish in the world.

Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna)

Moderately enjoyable platforming game. It was ok the first play-through but got bored going back and getting the missed collectibles (owls). Plan to 100% it soon. Experienced some minor bugs but nothing game-breaking.

Looking for VNs eh? Might I interest you in our communities VN expert, Tsupertsundere, and their VN List. Personally I really liked Analogue: A Hate Story and it’s sequel, Hate Plus. They are both really text heavy as they have you read documents, but the story, world building and characters felt really well done. Hatoful Boyfriend is a fun one, if you are willing to accept the zany idea of it being about dating birds. If you are looking for more chill with some romance, Highway Blossoms is one I had just finished, it takes a bit to start up, but overall well done and English voice acted at that. Can’t suggest too much after that, kinda depends on what you are into, but definitely check out the list I linked.

tsupertsundere

I clicked on this review precisely to link to this list and saw that you did already and now I’m not crying, it’s just raining on my face. Th-thank you!

Bangledeschler

Suppose it can rain even without clouds. ^_^ I saw it and immediately thought of all your posts and list. Thank you for doing such a service to this community. :D

BarbaricGenie

Thanks, added analogue to my wishlist and will take a closer look at the others once I get that chance.
And bookmarked the list.

I personally hought A new Frontier was terrible and completely forced. The characters re not likable and telltale just wanted to kill everyone off so “they can get you sad” it really felt rushed and was filled with bugs.
They brought the co-author of the first season for the final one so I will forget this existed if the final season turned out to be satisfying.

tsupertsundere

As harsh as your opinion is…. I really can’t disagree with it.

I didn’t know that! I am now cautiously optimistic for the Final Season. I mean, I was gonna play it anyway… but I’d be very pleased if it was even half as special as the first one.

Shax

Batman Telltale game was also very well made, so it’s not hard to forgive telltale for A New Frontier.
It just felt like a cheap filler for Clems storyline.

tsupertsundere

Welcome back! I hope to see you around.

I’m glad you had an okay-to-very-enjoyable spread of games this go around!

My favorite VN of all time is the House in Fata Morgana, which is well worth your time.

If you want a good sampling of the genre for free, try don’t take it personally babe it’s just not your story, Katawa Shoujo (both aren’t on steam, Katawa Shoujo has (well done) explicit sex scenes), AIRIS, the Sad Story of Emmeline Burns, and, after you’ve played a few VNs, Doki Doki Literature Club!!

That gives a good overview of different kinds of types and genres for you to try so you can see what you like without having to spend any money - then branch out from there!

Shax

I’m not much of a VN person but I really enjoyed Katawa Shoujo. Doki Doki was also very good but I kinda expected much of it after I played OneShot.

Have you played either OneShot or any of the Danganronpa games? I’m sure they are right up your alley!

tsupertsundere

I have! I wouldn’t categorize OneShot as a VN+, though, more of a story-heavy puzzler. I did enjoy them all very much c:

Shax

I wouldn’t categorize Oneshot as a VN either, I was kust comparing it to Doki Doki in a story perspective. the fact that I wasn’t able to go back on my save file to prevent the first death, i saw omething similar coming Oneshot just rubbed off the element of surprise for me in Doki Doki is all.

tsupertsundere

Ah! Right, makes sense. I definitely can see why you’d feel that way - I have to imagine I’d feel the same if I played OneShot first.

BarbaricGenie

Thank you, especially for the list have it bookmarked. I’ve wishlisted the house and already had doki doki on my to-play-soon list. Any specific reason you’d recommend one to play other VNs before doki? I’ve also recently gotten eden* and higurashi 1 just cause of the good reviews and plan to try those. Couldn’t help noticing that you haven’t included eden on your list despite having played it quite a bit. Could you give me your thoughts on it?
Thanks once again.
I’ve looked over your message a few times now and every time I’ve read the 4th line it’d take me a few seconds to remember “dont take it personally” is actually a game and I get confused

tsupertsundere

Well, Doki Doki Literature Club! Is a self-described love letter to the Ren’Py visual novel engine, and I believe a love letter to VNs in general. It plays a lot with standard conventions of visual novels. In that sense, the more you’re familiar with the conventions, the more those subversions will have an impact. It’d work fine without it, but you’d miss out on some of the ‘!!!!’ moments when what you’re expecting doesn’t happen. Does that make sense?

Sure! I typically idle my VNs a huge amount - my playtimes are notoriously unreliable bc I have one open pretty much every time I have my computer open… which is usually all day. I thought *eden was… okay. Nothing spectacular. I played it before I joined this site, so I don’t have a review for it (and it’s been a while besides) but I just didn’t connect with the storyline or the characters, I think. If I had to pick a ‘boy and girl at the end of the world’ story, I’d pick planetarian: reverie of a little planet in a heartbeat.

HA! OMG, this made me laugh out loud. Misunderstanding confusion is goofy and hilarious

Arbiter Libera

I also leaned more towards Batman over ANF, but you can’t help wondering how much more gameplay can Telltale remove from their games? They’re barely a step above walking simulators AND that added functionality are QTEs. Not to mention they really are guilty of making the same game with different skins.

Nice break. :D

BarbaricGenie

From what I remember, I think the most gameplay I’ve seen from telltale (played the walking deads except michonne and wolf among us) has been from batman with the detective-work. Other than that they’ve never really had much above QTEs like you mentioned and minimal interactions with the environment in places where you’re supposed to talk to a specific person to commence the story but can take some time interacting with the environment and npcs in a closed area. Their main focus is the story which is why when they fall short, the game becomes noticeably bad versus in other games where either the gameplay or the story can be good and still hold the game afloat.
btw you’re reviews are amazing and really put me to shame posting this. The break is cause of university so being able to post here is my actual break lol.

Arbiter Libera

Part of me wants for them to go back to honest to god P&C adventures they made before TWD like Sam & Max seasons or Bone, but I realize the game changed for Telltale when they struck gold with this specific formula. Their games also become a whole lot more enjoyable once you realize your choices don’t really matter and it mainly comes down to flavor or very binary almost forced choices. Btw, which Clem personality did you get in the end?

The break is cause of university so being able to post here is my actual break lol.

Enjoy it while it lasts. :D

I have my annual leave coming so something will get done in the summer, but goddamn do I miss college days for their sheer freedom.

BarbaricGenie

Sorry for the late response. I mean, I understand the appeal of being given the freedom to make your own choices that actually have an effect on the surrounding world, but at the same time I think I’d prefer to just have the choices made for me so I don’t have to feel the guilt of making the “wrong” choice. For example, I’ve been playing Life is Strange and (proceed with caution, minor spoiler for life is strange) I wasn’t able to save someone as it was nearly impossible unless you’re really lucky or were using a guide. I then made a second save file where I save her and the other being my original game where the character’s dead. And now I’m stuck cause if I play the one where she’s alive I feel like I’ve cheated and am not owning up to my choices and if I play the one where she’s dead I’m sad cause I could’ve saved her but I didn’t. I could play both but which do I play first. It does sound kind of silly but I’ve put the game on hold since and am playing other stuff. And that is why I prefer having the choice made for me. As for Clem I never really knew there were different personalities. idk mine seems pretty cool and I like her.
