Figured I’d do a lil update, since it’s been a while.

I’ve been raving about this game nonstop, but here is my review for Forgotton Anne. Highly recommend if you’re a fan of animated stuff like Studio Ghibli. I can see how it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea, as there aren’t multiple playthroughs worth of story changes. However the game makes it seem as if your choices matter by changing slight (keyword) things around the world. The conversations that are had shift depending on what you choose and the world feels super whimsical and immersive.

Both this and A Hat in Time have been my two most anticipated games, so I’m super happy that not only did I win it (!!!) but I loved it more than I could’ve hoped. Based on all the reviews of A Hat in Time I’m 99% sure I’m gonna fall in love with that, too. I’ve made sure to steer clear from all videos/reviews besides the initial trailer, because I’m so convinced and don’t wanna ruin anything for myself.

Which gave me a thought! I’ve seen a tag going around Booktube called “5 star book predictions” where people pick five books they think will be 5/5 stars and will become a new favourite. Whatever your reasons, you just have a hunch you’ll really love it. I’d like to do this, but for games instead!

My “5 Star Game Predictions” are:

  • A Hat in Time

    0 minutes playtime

    no achievements

  • OneShot

    0 hours playtime

    0 of 11 achievements

  • Marie's Room

    0 hours playtime

    0 of 7 achievements

  • The Turing Test

    0 hours playtime

    0 of 15 achievements

  • Unbox: Newbie's Adventure
    Contrast

    0 hours playtime

    0 of 15 achievements

The first 3 games I basically haven’t seen any gameplay, but I’ve heard such wonderful things and something, whether that be the first 10 seconds of a trailer or a glance at the screenshots, made me immediately think, yep I’m going to love this! I’ve since only seen positive reviews so it’s cemented my thoughts all the more.

The Turing Test and Unbox I’ve watched the first 20 minutes or so, which I guess is slightly cheating. But again, even before I watched the gameplay I was super hyped for and thought “this is totally my jam”. Portal 2 being one of my favourite games, plus generally loving puzzle games made me instantly attracted to The Turing Test. And 3D platformers are my favourite, so this cute lil gem called Unbox looks like a blast.

Another thing that sparked this “challenge” was seeing the trailer of FAR: Lone Sails, instantly fell in love. I’ll have to play these soon and see how close my predictions were! I try not to let my expectations and hype get the best of me, but sometimes there are just games that come out that look like such a perfect match. :D

I’m also challenging myself to not worry about achievements at all this month. wipes brow

If you guys have any games you’re certain will be a new favourite before ever playing it, I’d be interested in hearing some of your picks. :) Happy gaming!

The first 3 games I basically haven’t seen any gameplay

I think that’s best for games like a Hat in Time and especially OneShot. Going in blind makes them much better. I’ve not played Marie’s room but it looks interesting so I anticipate your review ^-^

I’m the wooorst at still not playing OneShot, I’m sorry! I want to remedy that, still super excited for it. :D (Thanks again!)

I will, it’s cool to see more of these “style” games come out (and amazingly free!). Just at a glance it reminds me of Life is Strange, am already interested in seeing what else these Devs come out with.

stef

thats ok! Have fun with it! Also after you beat it theres a solstice ending, which is really good. I had a few friends didn’t play it because they didn’t know so I thought I’d warn you :)

JaffaCaffa

Cool will do, thanks for the heads up. :)

That’s a pretty interesting idea! I’m curious whether these games will be as good as you expect them to be :3

I have Forgotten Anne on my wishlist, but based off of your review I’ll move it up higher! A Hat in Time looks VERY cute and fun - I’m hoping I’ll win it on SG!

I think you’re going to love the hell out of OneShot (be prepared! Bring tissues and something soft to hug!). I’m going to second what stef said about the Solstice ending. If you really like the look of The Turing Test, I’d also recommend the Talos Principle! (a LOT of incredible puzzles and a very engaging story)

That’s a really interesting setup, future 5 star predictions. I try to keep my expectations really low, because most of the time when I’ve gotten really hyped for a game, I’ve been disappointed. Even when a game is good, I would still feel let down because it wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be…

… but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to get your hopes up and be excited sometimes! My 5 would be…

  • WILL: A Wonderful World
    WILL: A Wonderful World

    0 hours playtime

  • Legend of Heroes: Trails in Cold Steel

I had to narrow some down, but I am really excited to play these games in particular!

I actually bought The Talos Principle on sale during the winter sale 2016, refunded it because my HB Monthly wasn’t cancelled like I’d expected + it was one of the Jan games. I messaged HB to cancel me for the next month…and they refunded for that one so I didn’t end up with either copy of it. :P (If I made any sense there haha.) Definitely on my games-to-check-out list, though for some reason I always hesitate. I feel like once I play it I’ll love it, I dunno why it scares me off.

Thanks for sharing your picks. :D I really need to sit down and play Legend of Heroes, enjoyed the first 2 hours but wanna properly get into it. Also really excited for Subsurface Circular. Those VNs look quite fascinating too, I know I added WILL after seeing you add it. While VNs are hit or miss for me, I’m definitely particularly interested in more detectivey/murder ones.

It could be since you associate it with kind of a stressful time, your brain is like ‘hey let’s avoid this’. I know my dumbass brain does shit like this sometimes. Even to just random games - I just can’t make myself play them… until I can.

Regardless, I hope you do play it someday! Likewise with Legend of Heroes - it’s actually my favorite overall JRPG, period!

YEAH I was so pumped when WILL finally got an english translation… and then bought it and just haven’t played it yet.

I didn’t hear about OneShot before. But after yours tsundere recommendation I decided to put it on my observed list :D

JaffaCaffa

Nice! The great thing about BLAEO. :)

JaffaCaffa

Hey, I was taking a glance at my last post and just thought I’d let you know that I very much enjoyed Oneshot! Would recommend checking it out one day. :)

kiseli

It is nice to see you managed to end your procrastination :D Wish i was that persistent ^_^

First of all thanks for mentioning Forgotton Anne, it looks great. So i had to add it to my wishlist :D And i do love Studio Ghibli :D

Out of your picks i only played The Turing Test and it was a great game, really enjoyed it. So i hope you like it too :)

JaffaCaffa

Hah thanks. :P (Fittingly 5 days later.)
No problem, happy to spread some awareness for it! Fingers crossed you end up enjoying it too if you ever pick it up.
And appreciate the extra motivation to get to Turing, glad to hear from another who liked it. :)
