Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag ⭐️⭐⭐☆☆
Action Uplay Freebie GamepadNo idea how long, 29 of 60 achievements (48%)
- naval battles where we control ship are really interesting
Cons:
- naval minigame - not only it's super slow without ability to turn on auto-combat, it's also not possible to auto repair all your ships. It took me once 25 min to lower danger level on all trade routes from red to green...
- capitalization of words in subtitles in the middle of sentence.. why?
- literally no other content in game than main quests, rest is just copy-pasted filler activity
- upgrading ship is really grindy, as you can't buy iron and wood. But you can sell them for profit... so you have economy where people can sell certain goods, but not buy them. Yay?
- inability to buy more than one hunting good at a time, so it requires a lot of clicking. Funny enough you can buy a lot of ammunition at time. But not hunting goods. You can't also craft few darts at a time
- sorting menu system that cycle between available / acquired / not owned. But when you use available to buy filter, items you already have (or can't afford) are still visible... again why? It makes whole filtering system utterly pointless when you still need to browse through things you already have (or can't afford)
- game is without closure, I literally thought I go to start another quest, not see to credits
- underwater sequences, where sharks patrol area, waiting to kill you.. seriously? I know they had to make underwater a bit dangerous, but repeating this stupid superstition that sharks just swim around, waiting for people to kill them??
- main character is not likable. Well he's not unlikable either. He's so... empty and shallow
- there is only one good sword / pistol set you can get quite early in the game. Rest is visibly inferior, so it's pointless to waste cash to buy it. So you're stuck with yellow menu highlight, indicating there is something to buy. As items don't get de-highlighted when you hover over them. Like they should
- neither Uplay nor game save playing time. I'd say something like that is basic functionality in XXI century
Conclusion:
It's fine Ubisoft game, with exactly the same gameplay like in all other Ubisoft games (only non-standard thing is nicely made sea combat). I run around, unlock towers to uncover map (and shitload of pointless collectibles), and sometimes find my way to main story quest. Story is average "pirate wants to become the best pirate", and shallow like a puddle. I wanted to play in Watch Dogs, as it was also free on Uplay. But as I see that AC:1, AC:4, Far Cry 3, FC: Blood Dragon are carbon copy of each other with different guns - I will pass. And most probably won't play in another "main series" Ubisoft game ever. Because games like Child of Light or Valiant Hearts are way better than them.
If you like Ubisoft games - you will like this one as well, as it's more... of the same. If you already played in few Ubisoft games and have enough - don't look here. Naval combat may be nice, but it's not enough to turn this game into something more than.. "generic Ubisoft game".
- interesting and easy puzzles
- some characters speak with rhymes - can be counted as cons for some people
- graphic style is light and pleasant
- light and not complicated humor
Cons:
- lack of map
- already acquired collectibles are not marked
- bug which made it impossible to get all achievements, due to faulty camera work - after transition from previous level camera is locked at the end
of next level. So it's not possible to move around, as we in fact move character that is not visible - so don't see where are walls, paths and so like
- forced returns to hub area after beating the boss
- combat controls can be wonky, and fights are more annoying than interesting
Conclusion:
Some ugly creature steals our ice, and we can't have drink without ice! So we go on adventure to get our ice back. It'd be start of the game summary. Turns out we're inside someone's head, and need to fight their fears in order to bring back normality (and ice). Best thing is that main character doesn't do it because of some higher goal or need to bring order. He does it because it's annoying to leave things as they are. As normally he'd gladly lay down and do nothing.
We solve simple puzzles to progress. For example - there are clouds of poisonous gas, and we need to start fans up to blow them away. It requires starting them in certain order, re-purposing batteries to turn off fans we don't need, and power up platform or other fan we need. So it's nothing demanding, but made well enough to keep me entertained. There are also time-based sequences, but thankfully they are rare.
There is hub area, and 3 routes branching from it, with boss at the end. They must be completed in certain order, as later levels are unlocked when we beat previous boss. And here comes my main problem with this game - after beating boss I'd want to go back to hub area on my own, and collect items I missed along the way. But it's not possible, game automatically kicks us to hub area. And to collect missed things, I'd need to again go all the way to the boss, and then all the way back. As you don't get "magically" teleported to hub area 2nd time. Game should ask if you want to go back to hub area, or stay on level with the boss.
Overall it's fine game, but nothing extraordinary. It does feel like nice game for kids, as puzzles aren't really complicated. But timed sequences or wonky combat in narrow areas could be frustrating for them.
Side note
I’ve beaten Ghost of a Tale and it’s so nice game with cute mouse :blobaww: But it will be in November update. I started Pillar of the Earth and playing feels weird, as I did see fragments of TV series. So for example I know who the bad guy is.
I hope I will beat Path of Exile this month, and maybe play Fe. It’s on Origin.
Stats didn’t change since last month, as I played only non-Steam games.
Also it’s exactly 2 years since I joined BLAEO, writing updates every month (1st post at 12.11.2016). It did turn into nice history of my backlog killing progress. I’d like to be able to see profile with pagination though, it may take a lot of time to dug all the way down :D
Wow I cant believe youve pretty much reached the end of your backlog thats amazing
Now I have few games on my Origin account. And like 40 games on Steam WL. But I will be able to play them more or less immediately, without having few months worth of games pile.
Thanks :D You have similar number of games to me, so I’m sure you will reach it at some point ;)
gdam thats alot of beaten games
This month only two :P. Year ago I could beat 6 - 7 games. But I’m less and less interesting in gaming, so I’m glad I’m quite done with backlog.
It’s so hard to find game that I’d really enjoy nowadays. And I try to focus more on RL, than my online activity. In a few months I may not have time to play at all.
Happy 2 year anniversary on BLAEO!
Is it even possible to beat PoE? I have a couple friends that have been playing that game for over 4 or 5 years. xD
If you liked the TV series and end up liking the game, try the book. It’s really good and so are the sequels.
Thanks :D
I try to beat it… started it like 2 times already. Fnord keeps saying it’s really good game, so I will beat it. One day :blobnervous:
And welcome back! Don’t know if I wrote in your last update.
Thanks. I almost didn’t have time to play nor post here, but it’s really good to be back. :)
Aww, we just finished Figment also (last weekend). My kids and I really liked the game. I didn’t run into the bug that you did, but I also didn’t get all of the achievements because I didn’t worry about them too much while we were playing (on my son’s account) and the Guide I saw didn’t indicate which remembrane was which, so it wasn’t worth trying to go back and get them. Anyway, it was a fun game and worth playing.
So it’s good game for kids after all? Nice. I get that vibe when I played it. Apart from like last timing purple-wave things, I did die because of them more times than I liked.
How old are your smurfs? I’d like to know how complex game can be, for kids to enjoy it.
It’s enjoyable for kids, but remember that I did the playing, they did the watching. That’s the way I like it, although more and more they’re wanting to play! They are 7. I died a lot in the one optional fight for a remembrane. And I died a lot in the last boss fight, but my kids helped me figure out what I needed to do. They are starting to get useful at times.
I was interested to read your thoughts on Black Flag. I gave up on it, but everyone I talked to really enjoyed it. I found it grindy and boring, and disliked the hunting aspect (hunting in III was good though). I’m glad to see it’s not just me who doesn’t think it’s that great.
You don’t have games that are loved by everybody. Like I barely went through Banner Saga, when it’s praised by many. Or Final Fantasy XIII. There are people that genuinely like this game. And I resigned in last act, as I was so done with it.
I really liked those small naval battles.. till I had more ships and saw there is no auto-battle system. I’d gladly clear all routes in 5 min, and then play 1 - 2 naval battles to recover lost ships. Than to be forced to look on those lame and too long animations for example.
It’s good “Ubisoft clone” game. But not good game overall. It’s not innovative, doesn’t have engaging plot or amazing gameplay. I saw that newest Assassin’s Creed had more changes than other games in the series. So it may be worth to beat it.
Congrats on the progress and the 2 year anniversary! ^^
+a billion for the pagination.
Thanks :D
Also it would be better readable, if every day’s updates would fill single page. Just like every month on profile page lists all games we played then. But I don’t know how much resources that would take from server, co calculate number of pages. cg did remove last button from SG to free up resources
