After beating it last month, spent a good while longer completing Animal Well. Completing the Steam achievements, that is. Even after that, there are clearly even more challenges and secrets in the game, which I worked on somewhat, but am far from completing, as some seem nigh impossible, or would require one or more tedious replays. So I feel fair and at peace calling it complete.

A friend mentioned that they had never tried either of the Left 4 Dead games, so I recommended it for some play-time together. A great chance to revisit this great classic!.
I'm making slow progress on completing Patrick's Parabox, with bite-sized puzzler fixes here and there.
Also scrounged one session of Arx Fatalis (been trying fruitlessly to give it an earnest go for two months now), but immediately after, Animal Well appeared out of the blue to absorb me. Still intent on deep-diving Arx and finishing it, hopefully next month.

The Shrouded Isle took a lot longer than I expected to beat. Although not out of difficulty (2nd try, and the first was a fairly short first contact), but because the "integrated" DLC made the game's campaign almost twice as long. I found the game interesting, with the relatively simple procedural mathematical "puzzle" aligning in interesting ways with the mood, lore and themes. But it doesn't really have any replayability. Once I found the algorithm (or combination of strategies to apply), it just became a very repetitive and mechanical rote thing. Which is why I will leave all those achievements untouched for now, and call it beaten and done.

This is the month where I started really biting into the backlog, even if I'm still in the red. The main trick was playing a few very short games I had in there. I'll try doing more of that every month.
I'm satisfied with beating Turok and scratching it off. Sizable enough, and fun at first but a bit tedious over the last fifth of the game. Same for Reventure, which took a lot longer than I expected to complete. A very fun and interesting concept, but once again a bit too grindy and repetitive over the last stretch.

Excited to start Arx Fatalis. An old classic, but a great one to start exploring more the Immersive Sim genre. There are many great games in that genre which I have never tried over the years. A deeper exploration was long overdue, and this SG Win is the perfect excuse.
Also excited to finally start playing Stardew Valley. But since I'm doing it exclusively with my partner, it will be slow progress. Best case, you can expect to see it in this space month after month.

If the downpour of free games every month already feels ridiculous, this month sure felt like Christmass! Especially for my backlog. While I managed to clear out several shortish games, it's a drop in the ocean of all the new ones coming in. And I somehow managed not to make a single purchase all month, despite the temptation of insane sales all around. And still, backlog got fat as a hog.

Alchemist's Castle
Morkredd: Won in a giveaway. A brilliant base concept, for what started as a fun, engaging and truly beautiful cooperative experience to share with my non-gamer partner. Not saying much to avoid spoilers, the very last part was a huge disappointment in several ways. A bitter after-taste for what was mostly a delightful snack.
Disturbed: A little free game, which reminded me of the style and philosophy of branching narrative game books, but in a contained form. Even made the usual repetition of failure, fun, as most of its achievements are a mere collection of the myriad ways you can die in the game.
The Ramp: A fun little digital toy, more than a game. OK to spend a short time with, once or twice, but gets old very quickly.
Alchemist's Castle: A nice short game, offering a very condensed full Metroidvania experience.
Skull & Bones Beta: Not featuring it here, since it's not on steam or backlog per-se (an odd one), but I spent the allowed 6h on the S&B beta. Was really curious about the game, but not sure it will be worthy, so wanted to get a hands-on feel for it.

Desperados III is done and buried. 100% achievements. Very satisfying, and fun to the end. Finished it with a fistfull of oddball Baron Challanges which really felt refreshing, with some new takes on what was already a very rich game.
A Short Hike was indeed, as the name implies, fairly short. But also full to the brim with joy and light-hearted fun. And I couldn't really let it go until I completed all of it, which tripled it's main-story feature-length playtime. I don't think I've ever played such a cozy and relaxing game that still managed to keep me so engaged throughout. I remember now that I discovered this one when looking for games to play after I finished Dredge, and wanted similar feels. Very appropriate, this is a very compressed and minimalistic Dredge-like of sorts... while rstill completely at the opposite side of the mood spectrum.
As for SuchArt!, that was a completely unplanned one. Worth mentioning because I tried it out and played through all of it as part of the PAGYWOSG monthly theme. Shoutout to Zelrune, who had just recently told me about PAGYWOSG. Was a nice way to get out of my groove, shake up my backlog and try something fresh and unexpected.
