Challenge me! Monthly Edition
previous

While Daerphen ist enjoying his holiday, I'll be taking over this round :) Since I'm a bit out of the loop regarding Challenge Me!s, I'll just copy over his rules from last time, with only one special rule for this round.

  • One of the picked games has to be at least 10 years old, in accordance with the December monthly theme (anything from this list and probably all suggestions underneath, or use this tool to quickly find qualifying games; I'll update the list soon, sorry that it's taking so long ^^). This rule may be ignored if the pickee doesn't own any eligible games.

The main goal of this is of course to motivate you to reduce your backlog and help you pick some games to do just that. And you can help others do the same!
If you've used the Steam group forums at all, you may have also seen a suggestion about profile badges, including participation badges for themes. We thought for this additional and hopefully regular) event, we will give out two permanent badges that basically level up the more you participate, one for finishing challenges (up to 2 per month) and one for issuing challenges/picking for others. Since badges are still quite a ways off, we'll keep an internal spreadsheet for now, so if we ever implement that, your "progress" won't be lost ;)

This round will last until January 15th, 2018.

Post your application for this month’s challenge as a reply here. Please before doing so, read the corresponding section below. Also, if you decide to pick games for others, read the corresponding section before you do so. If you encounter any problem with the games that were picked for you (either technical or if you think they don’t follow the guidelines) and can’t solve it with your picker, please leave a message as a reply of the first comment.

Applicants’ guidelines

  • Please make sure your games are sorted by completion before applying.
  • If you so desire and you have at least 5 unplayed SG wins, the 5 games can be picked out of your SG wins (instead of only 2/5). Just note it in your application comment.
  • Note in your post if you're ok playing multiplayer only games.
  • Same for Early Access (I know some people want to wait for release).
  • When you finish one (or more) of the games picked for you, please post an update by replying to your picker's comment.
  • If the game has achievements, you can link to either the Steam or Astats page corresponding to your progress.
  • If the game doesn't have achievements, please post a screenshot showing your completion.
  • Finally, if you have completed all the games that were assigned to you but want another go at it, feel free to post another application.

Pickers’ guidelines

  • You can pick for/challenge up to 2 fellow assassins, please refrain to pick more so everybody who wants to gets a chance at it.
  • You can pick for anybody who has applied and hasn't been given a list yet, unless they specified otherwise (see next point). It is recommended to signal with a "reserved" comment that you're currently picking for that person. This way it'll avoid the situation where you spend time picking games just to come back to somebody's comment 2 minutes prior.
  • Please use the following criteria when picking a list for somebody.
  • Length-wise: at least 2 short games (under 10h to beat) and 2 medium (under 15-20h). You can use HLTB to check the time, or more conveniently the Enhanced Steam browser extension (it shows the HLTB time directly on the game's steam page). That rule can be overridden by the bottom (i.e. pick 5 short games) but not the other way around, as not everybody has the same time to dedicate to gaming.
  • Pick two SG wins unless the person specified SG wins only, in which case pick only in the applicant's SG wins list.
  • Quality-wise: at least 3 of the 5 games should have a positive (or above) rating. You can use this site to quickly sort games in a user's library by ratings (thanks to JaffaCaffa for the suggestion).
  • Please, respect the applicant's choice regarding multiplayer-only and Early access games, as well as other requests (exclusion of certain genre etc.).
  • Please use the code below to post your comment, it's already formatted, you just have to copy/paste & complete the data.

For Pickers. Just copy paste and complete the data :)

FAQ

Do I have to participate in this event?
No, this is an event to help you reduce your backlog. If you already have a plan and don't want anyone to pick games for you, you're free to ignore it.

What happens if I don’t participate in the event?
Absolutely nothing.

What happens if I play all the games picked for me this month?
Still nothing. (You might get a shiny profile badge at some later date. And you can come back for another batch.)

What if I don’t have time to play 5 games?
Don’t worry, one is enough, we’re just asking the pickers to select 5 to give the player a little choice.

One of the game picked for me won’t run on my computer for X or Y reason, what do I do?
If this happens, please notify the picker by replying his comment and ask them to pick a replacement. If the original picker don’t give you an answer within 24h, don’t panic, just leave a comment and we’ll pick one for you. Meanwhile, you could try one of the other picked games if you haven't played them all yet.

I played all 5 games that were picked for me and I want more!
If you have completed all 5 games and reported your completion to the original comment, you can make a new request for another list.

When picking for other people, can I only pick “never played” games?
Not necessarily, you can also pick games that seem to have been abandoned but haven’t been categorized as “won’t play”. No beaten or completed games, or games being currently played obviously.

Why are there so many rules for picking the games? I can’t be bothered!
We’re trying to make this enjoyable for everyone so if you decide to pick games for others, please read and follow the rules. I’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for the pickers too, but if it’s bothering you too much, remember you don’t need to pick games for others to join the challenge.

I’m new here, can I join the challenge?
Yes of course (and welcome to BLAEO). Please just be sure to have your games sorted by progress before signing up for the challenge, to make it easier for your picker.

Comment here if there are any problems or I forgot to change something in the main post

EvilBlackSheep

Challenge me please! Please only short games (under 10 hours) for this round as with the holidays season and family visiting, I don’t know how much time i’ll have. As usual, no MP only or EA titles. For the game fitting the monthly theme, I’ve already pre-sorted the games applying in my library here. Thanks in advance!

uguleley

Here we go:

Short-ish games as per request, hopefully you’ll find interesting ones to play! If there’s an issue with any game, let me know and we’ll swap it. :)

EvilBlackSheep

Thanks a lot for picking, it sounds like a great list, I’ll try my best to play them :D I’ll be reporting back as I go :)

EvilBlackSheep

I just finished Day Of the Tentacle Remastered and it was as fun as I remembered it. I didn’t remember there was so many star wars references though. It was great!

uguleley

Glad you liked it! I wasn’t aware it was a replay for you, had you played the original before?

Happy new year!

EvilBlackSheep

Hehe, yes when I was a kid. Yes, I’m THAT old >__<

Happy new year!

EvilBlackSheep

I finished Over the Hills and Far Away, and it was an interesting VN but OMG the feels ;___;

uguleley

Alright! I don’t play many VNs myself but I had heard good feedback about this one from a friend, so that’s why it made the list. Wasn’t aware that it involves a feels trip :s

EvilBlackSheep

To be honest just at the end. It might have been raining on my face a little.

MouseWithBeer

I would like to have a go at it yet again. Really short games (sub 2 hours) please since I will probably only be playing them the last week of the challenge. I have already beaten a 10 year old game so I guess no need to bother with that? Also I don’t want Ninglor03 picking (nothing personal or that you pick badly, you just picked the last 2 times <3). Other than that feel free to dig out anything unplayed off my backlog.

ninglor03

It was my pleasure anyway ;) :*

This is no reservation!

LastM

I have some extra time, so I’m gonna pick for you as well. :)

  • The Dweller - HLTB Time: 1½ Hours - Sg win. I’m not a fan of puzzle games, but I enjoyed this one. Besides, it’s quite short.
  • The Journey Down: Chapter One - HLTB Time: 2 Hours - A PnC game with a very unique artstyle. I liked it a lot. :)
  • Ben There, Dan That - HLTB Time: 2 Hours. A very positve game that is only 2h long.
  • Bulb Boy - HLTB Time: 2 Hours - I never actually played it, but I needed another SG win and this was the only short one (<2hs) I could find that had been positively reviewed. xD
  • Cyborg Detonator - HLTB Time: 2½ Hours - Game has been removed from steam, but it’s in your ABC challenge and is also ~2h long. I can swap for another game if you want.

Ok. I hope the list is fine. It was harder than I thought to find decent short games. I had to include a lot of PnC games. I hope you like them. xD
Anyway, have fun with the games! :)

ps: You might wanna mark Apartment 666 as completed since the dev removed the broken achievement :)

MouseWithBeer

First of all, thank you for picking!
Since 2 of them run on Linux I might be actually able to do them a bit sooner, so that great :) The list is just fine (I am probably gonna lose my shit playing Cyborg Detonator, but such is life, I entered for it, I will play it).

And thank you for the info on Apartment 666! :) I shall fix it.

I’m participating as always! SG wins only please. I think I’ve already played all my old Sg wins.
PS: Don’t feel bad about choosing “bad” games for me. I won a bunch of terrible games when I started on SG. I totally deserve to play them.

ninglor03

ME!

ninglor03

So this is though on me, since I don’t know most of your unplayed wins. I just picked rather randomly tbh :]
Hope that works for you and it’s not all crap which can’t happen, because of the first one! ;)

Hope they work for you. If not, as always, poke me and I’ll help out asap!
Have fun and keep me posted :)

LastM

Thanks! I’m gonna start installing them tonight! :D

I’ll just leave this here and fill it as I play the games.

Game Proof Status Review
Life is Strange: Before the Storm 34/34 Completed! Won’t spoil it for you <3
Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches Screenshot Beaten I surprisingly liked this more than I thought I would. The story is interesting. The graphics are outdated as hell, but it’s still playable. A solid 7/10, I’d say.
Alcatraz Builder Screenshot Beaten It’s not a city builder, but another one of those 12 Labours Hercules clones where you get resources, to clean up the road and advance. It’s not bad, but gets boring really quickly. It has some bonus missions, but I’m not playing that. I’ve played enough.
Metrocide 21/33 Beaten It reminded me a lot fo GTA 1, with that top-down view, acquiring contracts and killing targets while running from the police bots. The only difference is that it’s set in a dystopian world and the game doesn’t have the quality of a GTA game.
Miracle Fly 7/28 Beaten It’s actually a decent game, but its best feature is also its worst one. The same weapon that you use to fly is the one you use to kill enemies. To fly up, you gotta shoot down and vice-versa. However that makes the game quite hard, especially when the levels have spikes and other stuff. The achievements are hard because none of them are tied to the story, but to kill the bosses without healing. I don’t have the skills to play this game. T_T
ninglor03

Sorry to hear that about Miracle Fly. But then again, it’s ok to not have that skill. You tried it and that’s it. Let’s move on and find joy somewhere else :)

LastM

It’s not a bad game. It’s hard, but doable. However, the achievements are tied to boss challenges. In the normal battle, you can you healing potions and even pay some stars to revive your character. In the boss challenges, you gotta do the same thing, but without any of that. That’s the worst part and the reason only 2-3 people managed to 100% the game, while the rest has only a few cheevos.
I don’t care much about cheevos, but I always try to get at least 25%. That was my maximum in this game. I’m not good enough to unlock the rest T_T
Having a great time with Rhiannon, though! Almost done with it. :)

Blue Ϟ Lightning

wtf

I just checked back for mine and saw this…your already 4/5 done and I’ve barely started…I mean sure I have an exam tomorrow and the next day and aaaaa
but still!

LastM

I had to rush a bit. xD
Because Simgives RIP Backlog xD and also the fact that I’m not going to be around much the next couple months.
I’m sure you’ll be able to catch up later, focus on your exams now! I believe in you!

LastM

I’ve finished my challenge! Thanks a lot for picking! ;)

ninglor03

Very good! You’re always soooooo quick! I’m right now at 22h in mine :D

ninglor03

I wanna be picked by Last.M please :)
Uh… yeah, I want one semi-endless game pls (aka a simulation! Can even be one I have spent already time in ;) ). We can totally do the monthly - can help you out there, have everything in steam sorted by years -, short ones aside the simulation aaaaaand maybe one win?
Oh right, as usual, no MP games, no EA and no Kinetic VN (so only those that have choices which will probably result in different endings, so erm… different cheevos?). Sooooooooorry!
Thank you for picking! :*

Merry X-Mas!

LastM

Ok. I’m done:

Let me know if this list is ok. :)

ninglor03

That’s super! Thank you!
Animal Lover - pretty 100% sure, it’s a VN, so everything is fine ;)

I’ll get to it right away bounce

LastM

Have fun! :)

ninglor03

You too!

uguleley

I’m ready! Been a while since I joined ‘challenge me’, the last time might actually have been the first one we had as a monthly earlier this year. :J

Anyway, here are my never played games, also made a quick list of games that apply for the theme here. My SG wins are all played. Long games are fine by me but it’s likely I won’t be able to finish them within a month, but my aim is to keep the list and finish it eventually. No multiplayer-only or endless games, thanks!

tsupertsundere
  • DAIKATANA - HLTB Time: 12.5 hours – Are You Ten Years Ago? Challenge
  • Goetia - HLTB Time: 7 hours to beat / 14.5 completionist
  • In Between - HLTB Time: 3 hours to beat / 5.5 main + extras
  • Little Inferno - HLTB Time: 3 hours to beat / 4.5 completionist
  • Wallace & Gromit Ep. 1 - Fright of the Bumblebees - HLTB Time: 2.5 hours to beat / 3 completionist

Huh. Wallace & Gromit doesn’t seem to be on steam? If you’d like me to pick another game for that spot, please let me know!

uguleley

Ooh I like the variety in this, thanks for the list! Looks like Wallace & Gromit has been removed from Steam at some point, but that’s no problem since it’s not gone from my library. :) I’ll be editing this post to keep track of my progress!

# Game Achievements Playtime
1 Daikatana

2 Goetia

3 In Between
69% (11 of 16) about 3 hours
4 Little Inferno

Beaten:

  • In Between: Interesting narrative theme, coupled with not so interesting gameplay. I’ll give it a solid “ehh, it’s alright” out of 10.
  • Little Inferno: Burning stuff in this game is very satisfying. I’ll probably go back for to burn some more combos although my house burned down. :/
uguleley

Managed to finish Goetia today, leaving me with mixed feelings.

Pros: The game is very atmospheric, I don’t think I’ve played a point n’ click puzzler that has felt as immersive. The art is beautiful, the choice of music fits really well. Some puzzles were satisfying to figure out, I kept a pen and paper close when I needed to write down a few notes myself :)

Cons: The game description mentions: “Feel free to explore! You can travel through the world of Goetia however you like - and if you get stuck, simply backtrack and explore another area.”. I wouldn’t have an issue with that design, but there were moments where you can end up stuck in an area because you haven’t solved a specific thing elsewhere and the game doesn’t give any indication if that happens, which adds to the confusion. You can also find solutions early on but you don’t know which puzzles they are for, because you explore areas in a different order than the game probably expects you to.

A few puzzles, especially in the last third of the game become too ambiguous. There is a well-written Steam guide that doesn’t spoil solutions right away but lets you check for smaller hints instead. Even after these hints leading to solving a puzzle, I didn’t understand how the notes/hints in-game were supposed to lead to that solution. The guide refers to these few puzzles as “unfair puzzle” or “misleading puzzle” - I felt comfort knowing I wasn’t the only one being thrown off with them. ^^

So my experience was pretty much 50/50. There were several moments where I really enjoyed spending time in this game, but I felt underwhelmed by somewhat same amount.

I’ve had less free time in my hands for the past couple of weeks, so 3 out of 5 in this “Challenge me” is not too bad! I do want to check the remaining two games at some point. Wallace & Gromit for some childhood nostalgia, and Daikatana when I have a curiosity to play an oldschool type of game. Thanks for providing the games for this challenge, your picks were a refreshing change :)

bloudeuedd

I’d like to participate aswell. I usually don’t manage to complete all of them in the given timeline and finish them later but this challenge is my main motivation to stick to one game and finish it and was great fun participate. So, please pick for me. No Early Access or Multiplayer only games.

JaffaCaffa

Sorry for the delay! Tried to give some variety and games I personally loved, lemme know if you’d like me to change anything and have fun. :)

  • Octodad: Dadliest Catch - HLTB Time: 3½ Hours Purely a lot of fun. The controls weren’t nearly as frustrating as I was expecting, huge pleasant surprise!
  • Grim Fandango Remastered - HLTB Time: 10½ Hours (Originally released in 1998 so counts towards the monthly.) Despite some obscure puzzles and backtracking that could be annoying at times, super enjoyable and a good remake. Really loved the story and still think about it years later!
  • Portal - HLTB Time: 5 Hours I’d say Portal 2 but guessing you’d prefer to play in order. Though I loved the sequel more, both are great really can’t go wrong. If you don’t mind can swap out for Portal 2 (13½ Hours) instead.
  • Epistory - Typing Chronicles - HLTB Time: 6 Hours An absolutely gorgeous, fantastic typing game.
  • Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number - HLTB Time: 12 Hours Amazing soundtrack, fast-paced, super intense and fun. This one does have some annoying off-screen kills but besides that just as enjoyable as the first!
bloudeuedd

Great, thank you for taking the time to look through my games and pick. I put them all to download and tomorrow morning my weekend starts with them.
I actually played through Portal (pirated it before I used steam) but it’s been a lot of years since then. I’ll replay the first one to refresh my memory and keep the second for another time hopefully soon in the future.

JaffaCaffa

Of course, hope you enjoy them. Have a great weekend!

bloudeuedd

Progress: 5/5

JaffaCaffa

Nice job congrats on your progress! Hope you’re enjoying the games. :)

bloudeuedd

Thanks, it’s slowly coming along. So far I liked all of them. :D

JaffaCaffa

Yay I’m glad to hear that!

bloudeuedd

I’ve been trying to get into Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number and always give up too soon. So, after looking up the first Hotline Miami I’ve decided to buy it and get into this from the start and the right way. If you don’t mind I’ll play the first one instead of this one and save this one for when I’ll want to come back and finish the series. I know the month is almost up and it doesn’t matter this much anymore, but I always try to finish games even if it takes me a lot more time and after the challenge is done. :)

JaffaCaffa

That sounds like a good plan! I actually looked to see if you owned the first one before challenging the sequel, or I would’ve had you play the first. :) The games are hard but I hope you manage to enjoy them!

stef

I’d loved to be challenged again! Also the picker can choose from any of my wins now. Before, I had some I didn’t want to play yet but now I don’t mind playing any of them :). Just no point and clicks please, I’m a little burnt out on them.

edit: Also I’m okay with early access and multiplayer too!

Blue Ϟ Lightning

“any of your wins” :3
so the only win you have unplayed is what you are saying… :3
Well I guess so if thats what you want…seams weird to chose it but w/e

  • Life Is Strange Before The Storm - HLTB Time: GAME#1-HLTBTIME Astats says ~9-10 hrs (UNLESS and this is important…I’m allowed to pick unfinished in which case swiched this for the witcher 3 :3)
  • Momodora Reverie Under The Moonlight - HLTB Time: GAME#2-HLTBTIME Personal experiance I’m at around 5 hours in (already above HLTB time) and near the final boss… this game is rlly fun :3
  • The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - HLTB Time: Ethan Carter-4 hrs…this is a game I started but switched to other stuff for and its now on hold unstil I get motivation to go back to it…
  • Kingsway - HLTB Time: Kingsway-5hrs (I don’t know much about this but a couple of my friends were talking about how they wanted to play it
  • Starbound - HLTB Time: Starbound-20hrs? I really liked terraria and have loads of hours in it so I’m interested in this even though people say it isn’t as good.

I wasn’t sure if the rules specified if you could choose from unfinished games or just unplayed games. That’s why I thought I had more SG wins to choose from :P
I’ll try to play a bit of both LIS and The Witcher (since I only have about 1 hour of real time on Witcher 3 rn).

The other picks are good too. Thanks!

Blue Ϟ Lightning

there was the one month that specified you should pick one unfinished and like…other than that I think its only if the person says you can

Blue Ϟ Lightning

I super messed up with not even checking the thread/hearing about the theme…I don’t think anything I picked counts towards the monthly…if you want you can message me here and I’ll replace one.

stef

Sure, I haven’t started any games so you can replace whatever you want :)

Blue Ϟ Lightning

replace starbound with Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines if thats okay then (monthly theme, ABC, and must play…) HLTB time is 24 hours…

stef

sounds good!

:) <3!!

I wouldn’t mind signing up again. I don’t have a lot of games (and zero wins) so it’s okay if a chosen game gets repeated. I’m also okay with mp and ea games.

escollo

BioShock Infinite - HLTB: 11½ hours
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice - HLTB: 7 hours
Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition - HLTB:8½ hours
Spec Ops: The Line - HLTB: 6 Hours
Styx: Master of Shadows - HLTB: 17½ hours

You have lack of old games, so I didn’t suggest any of them

:) <3!!

I really love the picks. Thanks!

Blue Ϟ Lightning

aaaaa

well…at this point its just habit signing up for these every month…since school started I haven’t been able to finish all 5 once and :sob:

but okay I would love to be challenged!
Please if you can could you pretty please pick all short games? (<10hrs) preferably even shorter cause I wish I could finish them all in the month…also HLTB times are stupid and I end up taking way longer cringes

escollo

Asphyxia - HLTB: 2½ hours
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - HLTB: 1½ hours
Monkey Island 2: Special Edition - HLTB: 7 hours - month theme
OneShot - HLTB: 4½ hours
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition - HLTB: 6½ hours - month theme

Blue Ϟ Lightning

thanks for picking \o/

…I’m super surprised metal gear is only an hour and a half…It took me 50 hours to play the other one.

escollo

Ground Zeroes is like a demo for Phantom Pain

Blue Ϟ Lightning

think I’m basically done
planning on playing a few more side ops in metal gear before marking it as beaten but other than that I finished everything \o/
thanks for picking

escollo

For some strange reasons I like this short single mission more than whole Phantom Pain.
Here’s to you…

Blue Ϟ Lightning

oh personally I liked it just as much as any mission in the phantom pain and I was kicking myself initially for not playing it at the same time but idk…it was kinda nice to go back and play it a bit again.

I also really liked asphyxia If you read any of the posts

escollo

I’ve never fully finished previous challenges, but whatever. Challenge me again!
P.S. No mp-only games please

EvilBlackSheep

I hope you enjoy some of those. Let me know if there is any problem with one of those and you need a replacement. Happy gaming !

escollo

I forgot that I have Hitman Go
Thanks for picking!

escollo

Day of the Tentacle - completed. Didn’t fit it into previous month, but whatever, it’s still a good old adventure

EvilBlackSheep

Awww it was so close (I have to admit I played it on the very last hours of 2017 myself). I had a good time myself, filled with nostalgia. I’m glad you enjoyed it too :3

And happy new year escollo :3

escollo

Happy new year you too

EvilBlackSheep

Thank you.

escollo

Between Me and The Night - completed. Nice game, but tbh I don’t get the ending. Just as ending achiev said %)

JaffaCaffa

I’d like to be challenged! I know for a fact I won’t be able to play much and still wanna beat a couple ABC Challenge games. But I enjoy seeing what people pick, will try and beat at least one or two. :)

rafaelgomesxyz

Weird, I thought I had seen this comment as deleted when I first came in. Would be happy to pick for you. :)

rafaelgomesxyz

Since I haven’t played any of your unfinished SG wins, I picked the shortest ones with the best ratings. All the other ones I played and really enjoyed. I tried to throw in a couple short ones because you mentioned you won’t have much time. Hope it’s a good list, enjoy! :)

JaffaCaffa

Awesome, sounds good. Thanks for the picks. :)

JaffaCaffa

Welp this month went even worse than I’d expected, really haven’t been feeling well or able to play much. And the thought of “restricting” myself is a bit tough, really struggling to concentrate atm so mostly playing mindless games. I will try to play one before the time’s up, will just have to see how things go! I apologise, this may be the first challenge I fail. :( But there’s still time!

rafaelgomesxyz

Don’t worry, there’s no need to apologize. :)

JaffaCaffa

I know this is late but I just beat Cave Story+, which I’ve been putting off for 3 years now. So thanks for the push, I enjoyed it!
System Shock 2 is now high on my list of games I’d like to try in 2018, so will definitely be giving that one a go too when I’m able. I look forward to it, thanks again. :)

rafaelgomesxyz

Nice, good job! :) It’s never late to defeat the backlog. :P I hope you enjoy System Shock 2, it was a great game for me.

banikanani

I’m ready to accept a challenge. Please no MP only titles.

rafaelgomesxyz

All games I played and enjoyed (although I haven’t finished BioShock yet), so I hope you will as well. I tried to pick different genres as much as I could. 3 very short ones and 2 medium ones. Hope you like the list, have fun. :)

adil

After my last failed challenge, I guess I’m back again asking for more.

Feel free to pick from unfinished as well as unplayed. Any list is fine just avoid multiplayer only please and early access games as well. But I don’t think I have any left?
I’d also like to beat one game from the monthly theme, so if one pick could be a game older than ten years that’d be nice too.
Thank you.

JaffaCaffa

Hmm since both of your SG wins include MP not sure if I should just skip the wins entirely. Unless you still need/want to complete the campaign of Homefront. I guess just replace one of the games if you’d like. :) Hope you enjoy the picks!

  • ABZÛ - HLTB Time: 2 Hours Really beautiful, relaxing game.
  • The Stanley Parable - HLTB Time: 2 Hours Funny/quirky, one of my favourites.
  • SUPERHOT - HLTB Time: 4 Hours (Unfinished) Had a blast playing, felt like a badass.
  • Tomb Raider: Anniversary - HLTB Time: 15 Hours (Unfinished. Fits monthly, released June 2007) You only have a few games that fit the theme. I played the Tomb Raider games when I was super young, hopefully they’re still fun today! Been meaning to try them again.
  • Dishonored - HLTB Time: 12-17 Hours I put this game off for years and was really pleasantly surprised. Is super fun to play regardless of which direction you go, with a great story.

About my wins, I finished ‘Emily is Away 2’ earlier today, if that counts? :D And Homefront yeah I still plan to finish it at one point, but since I lost my save (no cloud save…) it’s been hard to start the whole thing again. But I’ll get to it at one point so I’ll happily keep all your picks. They look great and I even forgot I had the last two in my library!
Thanks for going through the trouble of picking a monthly game as well! I should have said to look through my list I posted on the topic to make it a bit easier, though I didn’t feel like playing some of them… So you chose nicely, thanks.

JaffaCaffa

That should totally count haha, I would’ve picked it. Played it myself recently! And yeah I feel you, I have a couple wins that I’ll need to restart because of lost saves which puts a damper on things. You’re welcome, was no trouble. :)

adil

I finished SUPERHOT already! It was only 2 hours by the way and I thought I was a pro :D but the hltb time is also 2h for main story so it was normal haha. The last level was a pain though! I was a bit too stubborn also, wanting to kill them all… But it’s a cool game. I’m happy I got it in a bundle also because the retail is insane for such a short game. But it was a nice experience, worth playing! Now onto the next one… Which I still have not decided yet. :D

Edit: well I only had one choice, TR: Anniversary! December ends soon, and if I want to fit in the theme I have to beat it next xD

JaffaCaffa

Oops sorry for tricking you. :P I picked the Main + Extras time. haha And yeah on the last level I said to myself dang I’m pro speeding through it, it’s the easiest level so far…until I got stuck on ONE PART FOR SO LONG. aaaa It was like 80% in on the final and I jinxed it. haha And I completely agree. I really loved it but can see why a lot of people would be disappointed, not knowing it’d be so short.

Hope you enjoy TR. :) I forgot it’s already nearing the end of December, these months keep flying by.

I beat Tomb Raider: Anniversary today. Screenshot.
I now remember why I never finished it on PlayStation. It turns to hell towards the end. All the jumping and timing is quite a pain. Some puzzle where crazy hard also but at least now I can say I finally beat it. Even though I had to use some guide from time to time :D
But I probably wouldn’t recommend it despite the somewhat updated HD graphics, its control are kinda painful sometimes and as said, I had to use a guide from time to time, because the path I was trying to take felt impossible but it was most of the time just because of the game clunky controls. Well, it’s still a fairly enjoyable memory trip despite its flaws.

I also managed to beat Stanley Parable. I’m usually slow, and here I thought I took my time. I did a few endings, I even farmed all the manageable achievements and yet I only have 82min of playtime! But it’s a really fun game. I enjoyed trying a few different things in the game and see how it changes things. Loved the concept and it was well executed.

And with that, I have 3/5 games down already, I’ll probably manage to finish this challenge me, finally xD

JaffaCaffa

That’s unfortunate, I was honestly wondering..it seemed quite clunky. Controls are a pretty big factor on my enjoyment in games. I’m sure I’ll still probably get to them eventually but not rushed.

I’m glad you enjoyed Stanley Parable! Dang you were fast. Good luck with the rest of the challenge, you’re speeding through them. :)

Beat Abzu. It’s as you said, beautiful and relaxing. It starts slowly though, I enjoyed the last part a lot more, that’s where I spend most of my time jumping and doing whatever xD An other game I’m glad I got in a bundle (I believe?) because it took me only 2h30 to reach the end, watching the credit and everything! And it’s listed for 20€.

Finished Dishonored! I finished it some time ago already now, but I thought I’d be able to post my thought on the game faster so I was holding my challenge completion report haha. But I’m still having trouble putting my thought into words so here’s a quick summary of my last beaten game.
It was simply awesome! I had a lot of fun playing it, it had an entertaining story and best of all, we had choice of how to play the game! Rampage mode going on killing spree or more subtle silently killing or neutralizing people! That was so fun! The game isn’t perfect, but overall I had lots of fun. My favourite pick of the batch for sure! I tend to find FPS boring lately outside of a few exception. Dishonored was one of these exception! Thanks for picking this one!

JaffaCaffa

I’m glad you loved it! I completely agree, was a lot more fun than I’d expected. I think they nailed making both stealth and chaos a blast to play. Congrats on demolishing the challenge adil. :)

Trilled Meow

Hi, this is my first time, and I need all the help I can get with my backlog.

Consider my Never Played and Unfinished lists to be the same. I don’t have any special criteria.

I look forward to seeing what is picked for me. Thanks for your trouble!

adil

First time I issue a challenge as well! So here’s the list:

  • Tomb Raider: Anniversary - HLTB Time: 15 Hours Fits monthly theme plus I also have to beat it too so I won’t be alone in this :D
  • BioShock Infinite - HLTB Time: 11½ Hours (unfinished) - I love the series, it’s hard to recommend the first one due to annoying crash, so you have to finish this one at least!
  • The Wolf Among Us - HLTB Time: 10 Hours Pretty cool story, and the fact we have choices makes it even more entertaining.
  • The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - HLTB Time: 4 Hours Regular or Redux, pick whichever looks best for you. A beautiful, relaxing and mysterious game. I enjoyed the exploration. You may need to use a guide as it can be helpful to avoid frustration of not knowing where to go :D
  • LIMBO - HLTB Time: 3½ Hours A short but nice game. Weird and cool, the puzzle are great. You need to play it!

It’s not following the rules strictly, 3 medium games, sorry D: and no SG because you played enough already! But that’s what I liked and felt like recommending these. But if you want a game or two changed feel free to ask.

Trilled Meow

I like your choices. I only stopped playing Bioshock Infinite because I liked it enough to want to get the season pass when it was on sale somewhere for 5.99 again (which it is now!). I played Tomb Raider Anniversary years ago on a console but wanted to play it again on Steam, so hopefully I can get through it quickly – but I’m a slowpoke. :) I look forward to trying the others, too. Thanks!

Trilled Meow

Okay, so I ultimately beat 4/5 games. I started on Bioshock Infinite but ran out of time. Though technically I started late and could still beat this within a full month since you challenged me, and I’ll finish it soon regardless.

Thanks for giving me such great games to play. Tomb Raider was an old favorite, the Wolf Among Us stands out as surprisingly good, and the others were nice to finally play as well.

adil

That’s still pretty great! Plus I picked some quite long one but they were favourite of mine so I had to. I’m glad to see you enjoyed them as well though!

And 4 out of 5 is quite a feat since you indeed started later, plus there were holidays in the middle! So congratulations!
