January theme - list of games

The monthly theme includes games that we most enjoyed playing in 2018. It doesn’t matter what the game’s release year is - what matters is that you played it in 2018 and enjoyed it so much that you would like to see other assassins experience it too. You can nominate up to 10 games.

The list also includes the winners of the BLAEO Game awards 2018.

skanda

“Only” posted 8 for now. Will come back and add 2 more once 2018 is over. Need to leave some spots available in case I play some more amazing games in the next few days. :)

EDIT: Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands

EvilBlackSheep

That implies narrowing the list down to 10.

Will be back when i’ve stopped panicking and made a list. Great idea tho, i can’t wait to see everyone’s lists.

skanda

You can do it!

EvilBlackSheep

I’ve cut my list to 20 and now i’m waiting for people to post their list to see what have already been picked to remove it from mine. Then i can post the 10 remaining ones.

EvilBlackSheep

My evil plan worked, other people nominations helped me cut my list down to 10. Still had to cut a few (rip Banner Saga 2 and Call of Cthulhu, you almost made it. I hope somebody else picks them.) and but well, can’t have it all.

Book of Demons
Children of Zodiarcs
Iconoclasts

Narayan

I was mulling over My Memory of Us as well. I’m glad you chose it :) Also Book of Demons, Iconoclasts & Slay the Spire are relatively high priority in my backlog, so I’m glad they’re on your list too. (although Slay the Spire would need to leave early access in January for me to tackle it now, but at least there will be other cool things to play, probably too many to find time for all of them as usual ^^>)

EvilBlackSheep

there seems so many good things to play, and my backlog exploded over xmas gifts. I’m glad forgotton anne made the list, as it’s high in my priority file.

EvilBlackSheep

Hey, I remembered you talked about when Slay the Spire was leaving early access so I thought I’d let you know that in today’s update they announced : Full Release January 23 ;)

Narayan

Nice, thanks for the info! :) Don’t know if I will have time for it this month though. Starcrawlers (which is equally if not more as time consuming) is already eating up majority of my time, not to mention I have several other games lined up that I would like to finish in January. Still, it’s good to know :)

skanda

Goodboye sheep!

adil

Now that I’ve looked back on what I played, I could notice that it wasn’t really a great year for me (on PC at least). Still, here are the games I enjoyed the most this year:

Hollow Knight: A bit hard but really awesome once you’re into it.
NieR:Automata: Probably the best of the bunch. Perfect gameplay, loved the story and it is truly beautiful.
Dead Cells: Well, it is indeed addictive and really fun to play. Can be a bit hard too.
Grand Theft Auto V: Beat it a second time (first time on steam). I rarely go for a second run on games, but GTA is just that good.

skanda

Thank you, I added them to the list!
And that reminds me that I still need to finish GTA V. Supposedly I’ve reached the bit in the game where the story finally starts.

skanda

Transistor definitely deserves being at the top of that list. :) Thank you, I added them!

MouseWithBeer

Since it just happens that I have just about finished putting an end of the year post together with all the games I have completed this year and more choice is always better I guess:

skanda

Thanks, added them to the list!
This one was my favourite.

Teakupo

I don’t see American Truck Simulator on the list?

skanda

Oh, I see what happened - the first two links both lead to Euro Truck Sim and I added the games to the list by opening the links in new tabs so I must have just assumed that I double clicked. Thank you, added it!

Quisty

What a great idea for a theme. I will make the list as soon as I get on my pc.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc - https://store.steampowered.com/app/413410/Danganronpa_Trigger_Happy_Havoc/
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair - https://store.steampowered.com/app/413420/Danganronpa_2_Goodbye_Despair/
Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony - https://store.steampowered.com/app/567640/Danganronpa_V3_Killing_Harmony/
I got the first one from my secret Santa last year and it was so good I just had to buy and play the other ones.

Tametsi - https://store.steampowered.com/app/709920/Tametsi/ - brilliant Minesweeper like hidden gem

skanda

Thank you for your list!

brilliant Minesweeper like hidden gem

Ooooh, you have my attention! Had to add it to my wishlist.

MouseWithBeer

+1 for having my attention with Tametsi. Thanks for letting us know about it :)

Flygonite

Only played a little Tametsi after learning of it around a week ago, and it is not messing around. Anyone who hasn’t played Hexcells first should probably start there.

Pietruszek

My favorite games played in 2018 are of a mix rather well-known indie titles and underappreciated hidden gems since I haven’t really touched AAA stuff this year.
The list is in an alphabetical order. I wouldn’t be able to rank these when each of them is a completely different game ;)

skanda

Thank you, I added them! How come Celeste didn’t make the list, though?

Pietruszek

Hahaha, I haven’t played it yet ;D

I’m a passionate gamer who likes to read reviews, interviews, dev blogs and follow various gaming events. As a result:

  • I have my own opinions about many of the games launched in 2018 despite of not having played any of them and sticking to playing my backlogged titles
  • many of my predictions for The Game Awards 2018 were correct
  • I’m quite good at recommending games to people even if I haven’t played my recommendations
  • when I’m starting a game or adding something to my wishlist I often already know what can I expect from it. I obviously don’t know how the game will achieve this, what plot twists will I see, what will be the solution for the puzzles, etc. but I’ve certainly at least read a few of the reviews on the store page ;)
skanda

Thank you, they were added to the list!

skanda

Thank you for adding Pyre to your list!

tsupertsundere

My pleasure - Pyre was amazing!! It made me love bards! Now I love bards AND fantasy basketball!

EvilBlackSheep

OMG thanks for helping me reduce my list of 4 items I’ll manage to reach 10 eventually

tsupertsundere

We on that same bullshit! I’m glad I could help prune that much

Narayan

Thanks for nominating Ōkami HD :) This freed up a slot for me to nominate something else instead. ^^ I liked Night in the Woods as well, but I played it in 2017, so it didn’t qualify for my list.

tsupertsundere

I’ve seen a LOT of great ones that I can’t nominate bc I played in 2017, but it turns out I played way more stellar games in 2018 than the year before! I hope the trend continues with more magnificent games in 2019

JaffaCaffa

You “stole” my picks for Tacoma (can’t believe that was this year! seems like a while ago since we talked about it) and OneShot (which btw thanks for the extra push to play it sooner than later, was SUCH a beautiful game). I’m definitely gonna play Subsurface Circular soon!!

tsupertsundere

This year has been sooooooo looooong

I’m glad to hear it! I hope you enjoy it

Narayan

So I excluded games mentioned before me, as listing repeats would be imo pointles. And even thought that made me choose from a smaller pool, it didn’t make it any easier T_T So instead of top 10 personal favourites played in 2018, I decided to make it top 10 recommended (since sometimes my tastes are a bit peculiar and what I personally greatly enjoyed, probably most people wouldn’t, and those games are supposed to be played by whole BLAEO, so picking the ones more broadly appealing seemed sensible). And still I had a hard time to narrow it down to 10. T_T I had to make some tough choices. I think I would need 15 picks to do it more justice XD

* [Unavowed](https://store.steampowered.com/app/336140/Unavowed/)

skanda

And still I had a hard time to narrow it down to 10.

It was originally going to be 5 nominations per person, imagine trying to do that!

For copy-pasting:

Omg, thank you! <3

Narayan

It was originally going to be 5 nominations per person, imagine trying to do that!

EvilBlackSheep

I was counting on you for Unavowed, thanks you didn’t disappoint.

Trilled Meow

What do we use here to display code?

Narayan

I used three tildes on top and bottom (in empty lines over and under the block). Here’s the reference: https://kramdown.gettalong.org/quickref.html#code-blocks

Trilled Meow

Thanks!

skanda

Thank you (especially for Little Nightmares since I had to leave that one out), added them!

Trent

Deus Ex Human Revolution
Remember Me

Two of my all-time favorites! :D

Joe

I loved Remember Me, I didn’t have too much trouble with the combat for most of the game, the boss fights took a few tries… but thanks again for offering your help with it :)

skanda

That’s a really nice list, thank you!

Deleted

This comment was deleted almost 6 years ago.

skanda

Thank you for this great list!

skanda

Thank you very much, I added them to the list!

skanda

More than just a few is definitely good, thank you!

skanda

Ah yes, Rakuen, the game about our resident spacecat.

Kaleith

:spacecat:

the Traveler

I really dig this theme and look forward to making a selection for next month!

Unfortunately most of my gaming this year has been non-Steam and my top GOTY for 2018 is likewise not on the platform, so I’ll chill in the cut and let you fine folks select some awesome games for me ;)

skanda

You’ll have a lot to choose from. :)
What’s your GOTY?

the Traveler

Leaning heavy to Orwell from the monthly list so far, will make my final decision tomorrow. :)

My favorite was Destiny 2, particularly after the Forsaken expac. Got it from Humble Bundle earlier in the year, got a RL friend to play it with me, then got super into watching MyNameisByf YT videos which made me enjoy all the little nuances of the story/lore on a whole other level. It wasn’t just an “alien shooter hyuck hyuck” anymore, it was a world that had a long and storied past with characters that had their own personal soap operas going on with each other. Seriously I listen to MyNameisByf while I’m lifting at the gym so I can plan where to explore in game next time I play lol.

I know the game has detractors and rightfully so, but as someone who casually plays games anyways I never had the end game issues some hardcore players had. It was just enjoyable for me and never stressful at any point.

godprobe

That’s an awesome challenge! :)
And here’s my not-quite-ten for 2018, in rough order of recommendation…

alpha- and c/p-friendly…

* [Dishonored](https://store.steampowered.com/app/205100/Dishonored/)
* [Human Fall Flat](https://store.steampowered.com/app/477160/Human_Fall_Flat/)

* [The Sexy Brutale](https://store.steampowered.com/app/552590/The_Sexy_Brutale/)
skanda

Yay, now both Dishonoreds are included! Thank you!

Pietruszek

I can recommend Monaco even in singleplayer - that’s how I’ve beaten the whole game and I actually had much more fun with it compared to an online coop with random peeople (which was my second playthrough). If you want to play coop I recommend finding someone who will play with you through the whole campaign since communication and not rushing things is vital in a stealth game ;)

Also choose singleplayer if you really like stealth games and want a better challenge. In coop each person chooses a different class and having more skills at your disposal is a significant difficulty drop since levels are the same as in singleplayer.

JaffaCaffa

Love this challenge, great list already! See a bunch of my all-time favourites which I’m excited to see some people play.
Man it was really hard to pick just 10, even with many of my choices already picked by others. :P Had a few local co-op games as well, but know way less people can play those & with so many to choose…

Gorogoa
The Haunted Island, a Frog Detective Game
Zenge
Hidden in Plain Sight (local co-op/controller only)
The Room
Rusty Lake: Roots
GNOG
Aviary Attorney

skanda

If only all my Armello friends weren’t such backstabbers… :P Thanks for the list!

Wolfedood

But that’s half of the fun! (Twiss/Mercurio main here so backstabbing’s like default mode)

skanda

Yeeeeah but at least backstab the AI or random players before backstabbing the closest friend! :D

EvilBlackSheep

Sorry to butt in, but I have a question. Is Thea 2 already worth playing/buying? (I loved the first one but i’m always a bit suspicious about Early Access and the reviews were saying it was very bugged.

Wolfedood

If you want a finished, polished game it’s not really there yet. There are a few bugs around and some systems aren’t fully implemented but the bulk of the game is there and there are frequent updates/fixes, at some point even daily ones. It’s certainly playable and enjoyable(to the point where I sank 116hours into it over the past month and intend to pour into it some more in the following days) but only if you’re okay treating it as a beta.

EvilBlackSheep

Thanks for the feedback, I think i’ll wait a bit while i play some of the stuff i got recently but keep it very high in my wishlist to have an eye on it. The first one was so addictive :3

So, yeah. Luckily I rate my games \o/
I only picked the 4/5 games (RotTR is on the list, bc I’m sure it’s a 4/5 but I didn’t rate it… bc of reasons…)

skanda

No 5/5? :(

ninglor03

Nope. But 5/5 is something as mindblowing awesome as Mass Effect for me. I rarely find something as awesome :]
So 4/5 is already pretty good! Like the best you can get - before it turns into… well, mindblowing awesome :D

Trent

Not necessarily the newest games, but these are the games I played and enjoyed most in 2018.

* [Dreamfall Chapters](https://store.steampowered.com/app/237850/)
* [Life Is Strange](https://store.steampowered.com/app/319630/)
* [AER Memories of Old](https://store.steampowered.com/app/331870)
* [Glass Masquerade](https://store.steampowered.com/app/511470)
* [The Fidelio Incident](https://store.steampowered.com/app/632070/)

And the first two make my list of all-time favorites.

skanda

Glass Masquerade reminds me of some game I played a lot as a child. Now it’s going to bother me that I can’t remember its name. :( Thanks for the nice list!

Traqie

Another World – 20th Anniversary Edition
Alpha Protocol
To the Moon
Aporia: Beyond the Valley
Shadow Blade: Reload

Is to the moon ok btw? I’m asking because I’m really surprised it’s not on the list already lol. And yeah I played it in 2018 for the first time, better late than never eh?

skanda

Yes, To the Moon definitely belongs there! I guess most of us must have played it before 2018.

Dark Souls

Funny that 4 (!) free to play games are on my most memorable list. There are so many great, experience-length free to play games that only get recommended by random people, or steam dicovery queue showing them eventually :)
edit: took only 3 or 4 edits to make the list readable and possible to copy-paste into the list, yaay :D

skanda

took only 3 or 4 edits to make the list readable and possible to copy-paste into the list, yaay

Took me 3-4 edits to un-bork the list after copying your games in. :notlikeblobdog: I also found out that the alphabetical order in the main list at some point went P-Q-P-R. Not my morning!

adam1224

Me sucks :(

skanda

Only one was your fault (an extra space), the rest were mine!

JaffaCaffa

I played How to Cope With Boredoom and Loneliness, knowing absolutely nothing about what I was getting myself into.
Had me laughing out loud and dancing in my seat on multiple occasions. Probably would’ve never picked it up (or possibly even heard of it) otherwise, so thanks for the rec. :)
(Also +1 to We Were Here, one of my favourites!)

Yeliena

Well, looks like most of the great games I’ve played already got mentioned. I’ve only played the DLC in The Talos Principle in 2018 but that still counts, right?

I’d say it does. :eyes: Thanks for the list!

Kulfy

Here is mine (after removing everything that’s already on the list :) )

  • FTL
  • Dark Souls 2
  • Shadow Tactics
  • Abzu
  • Steamworld Heist
  • Ori and the Blind Forest
  • Alan Wake
  • Grow Home
  • Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
  • Lara Croft GO
skanda

Thank you! (Did you know some people play Abzu with the sound off? :( )

ninglor03

NO! HOW DARE THEY! O.O

Formidolosus

From my own list of top 10 games I beat in 2018

  • Batman : Arkham Knight
  • Hitman (the reboot obviously
  • A pixel story
  • Yooka-Laylee
  • Shadow Tactics
  • Sniper Elite III
  • Mark of the ninja
  • Lego Marvel Super heroes 2
skanda

How was LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 compared to the first one (if you’ve played both)?

Yeah it was still good. I think the first one still feels like the better game because it introduced a lot more to the lego games, in terms of side quests and extra things, and I think I liked the coherence of a single city, as well as the inclusion of the x-men, but heroes 2 is definitely still a highlight in the lego games.

Dishonored
Yes, I know, I’m a little late to the party. I bought it like 3-4 years ago and was hyped for it at the time. What did go wrong I don’t know.

Grim Dawn
As good as Diablo 2. Very enjoyable game!

Stardew Valley
I think I haven’t uninstalled it since I’ve won it on SG. Also made my girlfriend addicted to it – quite an achievement considering she’s not into video games :P

Owlboy
It had a few minor flaws but I’ve had so much fun with it! The story had a few plot twist I didn’t expect coming (in a good way, even very, very good way). And also: owls!

Mini Metro
Surprisingly addicting game :O

OneShot
You have only one shot (pun intended) to experience this incredible game so don’t waste it by reading anything about it or, even worse, watching a gameplay. A must-play for everyone who like good stories, emotional experiences, reading and unique gameplay.

CHUCHEL
Not much of a gameplay here but man, this is damn enjoyable, charming and funny game!

Night in the Woods
Didn’t finish it cos I’ve had problems with running it properly on my laptop. Huge heartbreak :(

Into the Breach
So far so good! I was looking for a game like this for some time now and didn’t expect to find it in Into the Breach :P At first glance it looked so uninteresting to me but after reading reviews and hearing how everyone’s in love with this game I’ve added it to my wishlist. Won it on SG during Christmas and boy I was surprised – it really is that good :O

skanda

Thanks for the list and your thoughts on each game and my condolences for losing your girlfriend to Stardew Valley. :)

and my condolences for losing your girlfriend to Stardew Valley

Made me laugh probably more than it should :D Sorry for a late reply though!

Here are the best games I played last year:

Lucky Thirteen

Yay, can I suggest some games, too? These are the ones that I think I enjoyed the most in 2018:

Dex
Epistory - Typing Chronicles
Lost Castle
Qasir al-Wasat
Pillars of Eternity
Serial Cleaner
Shadow Warrior (2013)
The Padre
The Shrouded Isle

Definitely enjoying this listing… it’s helped immensely in narrowing down the games I’m dedicating myself to playing this year.
I’m missing 89 of the suggestions, but have made a BLAEO list of the 180-something community picks thus far that I do own. It’s sorted for me, and my progress on those games, but maybe it’s still helpful for others to see thumbnails, too. (A few games are in there twice side-by-side due to additional editions of those games being available as separate Steam library entries, such as Deponia and Arkham Asylum.)

JaffaCaffa

Completely agree! I made a list myself of ones owned to fall back on if I’m ever in need of some good suggestions. Definitely one of my favourite, community-based challenges. It’s cool to see everyone’s taste in games and serves as a nice “tool” to use for the whole year.

Indeed, thanks for the idea and putting the list together skanda. I made my own year-long challenge me based on all these suggestion.
Now, good luck to me to beat this list xD

It’s never too late. Looks like some people might try a yearly challenge with all the suggestions on the list :)
PS: Hidden Folks was already posted but Skanda didn’t add it yet.

whoops
I’ll leave it as it is though, because the next games in the rank scored the same and I wouldn’t know which one to choose.

All the games listed above this posts were added to the list.
