Whalecome to the new monthly theme! It’s inspired by World Oceans Day which is celebrated this month (8 June).
Games that qualify: any games related to the ocean, the sea, marine animals, swimming and diving.
Check out this list if you’re unsure about which game(s) to play:
- games taking place at the seaside/at open sea/under the sea (for example Assassin’s Creed IV/Origins/Odyssey, Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Subnautica,…),
- games with a sea/ocean level,
- games that feature marine animals as the main character(s) or prominent side characters (for example Octodad: The Deadliest Catch),
- games with the following tags: Naval, Pirates, Sailing, Submarine, Underwater (use this website to filter games in your library by tags).

Do I have to participate in this month’s theme?
No, as with every theme, these are merely suggestions for anyone who is unsure about what to play next. If you already have a battle plan for your backlog and/or don’t like this month’s theme, you’re free to ignore it.
What happens if I don’t participate in the monthly theme?
Nothing.
What happens if I play all of my unfinished games this month?
Your backlog will be a much smaller place.

As someone with the irrational fear of videogame (sea) water I will happily not join in, but I just wanted to say it is a lovely theme. There is something very special about themes that reflect nice world’s XY day.

Yes water in games are the worst. I remember kameo had a water scene and I just got my mum to do it for me the whole way through since no way was I going underwater especially when there was monsters under it. I can barely handle a hat in time and thats just a blue blob that only hurts if you stay in it to long. The fear of unknown water territory is horrible

Yesterday I was driving in the tram (I live in germany) and there was a maybe 3 years old little boy who was singing “Baby Shark, Dudududududu, Baby Shark Dudududududu…” Really, I never heard this song before it was posted here as the monthly theme song. And now I heard it from the little boy. That was so cute and I automaticly have to think about BLAEO. ;)

Estranged takes place on an island and you start off underwater when your fishing boat sinks. If it doesn’t count then I can remove it. I also played through Cat Goes Fishing on the harder difficulty but didn’t include it here.

Everything is better with guitars and in the rock/metal genre… well almost everything.
Not surprised to see it done by Leo, but I am surprised I haven’t seen it before!
I am really bad at keeping up with these themes as I often get too busy or distracted, but I shan’t give up yet. Definitely plan to XCOM: Terror from the Deep, but also might fall back on Bioshock Remastered or Bioshock 2 Remastered just to secure my Monthly Theme contribution. How was Abyss: The Wraiths of Eden, by the way? I still have it on my “possible candidates for the theme” list.
It was fine…standard somewhat-older AF HOG fare. The protag saves her incapacitated husband. None of the puzzles was really difficult or annoying. It does require two full playthroughs (one on Expert) for 100%…once doing the HOG scenes, and once doing the HOG-alternative game (dominos). And I ended up having to play 2 1/2 times because I didn’t realize one short sequence was actually a HOG, so I didn’t switch to dominos.
Pfffft, I think many people are curious what others are playing! That’s why we’re here, right? :D Am always nosey and have a gander, even if I don’t reply to most. Did you enjoy Monkey Island?
I did…I never played this old classic back in the day, and so I finally played it with my kids. It’s nice not having to worry about achievements and being able to get an in-game hint when you’re stuck and not having to consult a walkthrough. :) The UI was definitely “old school” (read: annoying), but it was worth it overall.
We’ll probably play Monkey Island 2 next, which does have achievements, which means having to get up and check a walkthrough when we’re stuck. Oh well.
BTW, I do think people are curious what others play, and read/skim the updates, but coming to this page just to look into somebody’s progress on the monthly theme seems a bit dubious, except maybe if you’re updating your own progress and glance at others’ while you’re there.
Yeah it’s one of those that I missed out on as well and have heard nothing but great things, but can be hard to tell how much of that is rose-tinted nostalgia. It’s awesome that kids from this generation are still getting to experience the older classics. Hope you enjoy MI2 just as much, even with the achievements!

I tend to at least skim through the page a few times per month. Sometimes people play something you did not think of for the theme.

LOL. You taught me a lesson because I didn’t think to use the reverse image search to find if something is a stock photo. I thought maybe they found a regular stock photo of a whale and then used some kind of effect.
I’m back to work after a year of unemployment (yay!), that’s why I didn’t play as much in the past two months. But I managed to squeeze in a couple of games that fit the monthly theme.
