January theme - list of games
The monthly theme includes games that we most enjoyed playing in 2020. It doesn’t matter what the game’s release year is - what matters is that you played it in 2020 and enjoyed it so much that you would like to see other assassins experience it too. You can nominate up to 10 games. Feel free to also tell us why you liked these particular games, I’m sure a lot of us would love to hear why these games were special to you.
I would really really really appreciate it if you could include a “clean” list of games somewhere in your post. Please use this format to make Daerphen’s life easier. :)
``` * [Name of game 1](Steam store page link) * [Name of game 2](Steam store page link) * [Name of game 3](Steam store page link) ```
The list also includes the winners of the BLAEO Game Awards 2020.
The Longest Journey – Played it a second time this year, and it’s still a really nice (though rough around the edges, and a fan patch helps) game – played it roughly half on my PC and half on my phone via ShadowPC streaming.
Friendly Fire – Free! A short, neat, nice little game.
Emerald City Confidential – Never goes on sale!!! Was glad to have finally played it though after waiting literally years for a sale that still never happened. Thought it would be rougher, being one of Wadjet Eye’s earliest games, but it was still pretty solid, apart from a few small transparency issues. Also played this mostly on my phone via stream.
Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter – Finally beat this one (via Stadia), having started it many times over the years. Kinda missed the random anti-gravity bits from some of the original levels, but the outstanding gun and enemy characteristics and behaviors more than make up for it. Truly a fun, and challenging shooter. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAaaaAAAaaaAAAAAAaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
Definitely been a year for game streaming for me. Most of that has been on Stadia. And though I’ve finished a few games on the service (the first two reboot Tomb Raiders, SUPER HOT, Mortal Kombat 11, The Gardens Between, GYLT, Samurai Shodown, and even Monopoly), I don’t feel particularly compelled to bloat my list here. That said, The Crew 2 has been getting a lot of my time there, as well as Cyberpunk, and Red Dead Redemption 2 – unfortunately… haven’t beaten any of those three yet, so I can’t add them here!
- Simply a good good, old old point-and-click.
- What can I say? It’s the best open world game I’ve ever played.
The Walking Dead: Season Two: Obviously it’s not as amazing as Season One when everything was new, but I still thought it was great…the characters, the choices, etc.
CAYNE: Free game and a really good one if you liked STASIS
Driftmoon: The first RPG I every played “with” my kids (when they were three). I beat it years ago but I revisited it for the added achievements. Cute, charming, runs on a toaster.
Trine: Y’all know what this was about, but I hadn’t played it before. I just got the full series (Trine 1-4) on our new Switch so I’m playing Trine 2 there.
The Book of Unwritten Tales 2: Fully voiced classic point-and-click with some modern amenities. Some moon logic puzzles, but actually not so bad. I liked it more than the original BoUT.
Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna): See Trine, above. In my backlog for a long time but finally played it co-op with my kids now that they’re old enough.
Life is Strange: Before the Storm: See TWD:S2. Not as great as LiS of course, but still really great, IMO.
The Norwood Suite: Quirky and kind of creepy point-and-click. The ending disappointed me, but I really enjoyed it overall.
The Swapper: Nice story-based platformer with unique cloning mechanic.
PLANET ALPHA: Beautiful 2.5D side-scrolling sci-fi platformer.
Oh hey, Planet Alpha made the list! I remember you choosing to play it after I rec’d it from last year’s community picks. :)
That’s awesome that you’re able to play more & more games with your kids! Always makes me smile hearing it, those are some of my best memories growing up. It’s always neat seeing others do the same. :D I love reading your comments for that, hope that doesn’t sound weird. hah Gotta get ‘em addicted to games young! I mean….using their brains to enhance their reflexes and have family bonding! ;)
Thanks for the comment, Jaffa. Not weird at all. :D It’s getting harder to play games with my kids these days because they’re nine and mostly just want to play Roblox. XD But I’ve been playing Trine a bit with my son and Adventure Pals. I keep picking up cool MP games to play with them but it’s getting harder. My son is playing Zelda Breath of the Wild on Switch as I type this and daughter is playing Roblox. Hmm.
And yes– thanks for the recommendation of PLANET ALPHA!
Thanks for the note and happy gaming!
I had no idea Adventure Pals was local co-op (though I guess the name slightly gives it away? :D), will have to look into it more. I got it on twitch for free but just set it aside in the ‘maybe one day but probably not’ pile. Ah I can see how getting everyone to play could be a challenge, but even just hanging out in same room or talking about games is cool. My dad would ‘backseat’ check out what we were doing or make fun of us when we died, even if not playing together. I’ve still yet to play more than like an hour of a Zelda game, so your son is already ahead of me!
Did you ever try Overcooked/have any interest?
Yeah, Adventure Pals is good…a fair amount of content and good 2-player co-op. Mostly just bashing the bad guys, but there’s a fair amount there especially if you want to experiment with different ways to play (not just bashing the bad guys). I haven’t played any Zelda (even an hour!); that is more my wife’s domain (as are the Mario games), so it was her Xmas present from me, which now our son is also taking advantage of. I’ve mostly only played Trine on our Switch.
Suggestion: at the top of the post, tell people how to make the clear version with the three backticks on their own line.
I didn’t play that many games this year.
aaaw, last year many games had already been mentioned, thus making my job easier.. this year not even one! :(
There were some pretty close scores for the last spots, not even I am sure why some made it in the end while others not.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- Cat Quest
Cute and quite-short lite-rpg adventure, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll get stuck.
- Crash Bandicoot™ N. Sane Trilogy
If you haven’t played this back in PSX days, you are in for not-one, not-two, but three fun (and sometimes hard) games.
- Darkest Dungeon
This game can set such a gloomy mood D:
- DmC Devil May Cry
Guess you all know this; alas, I’m quite behind everyone when it comes to try new games. Beaten only once, no time to replay at every difficulty (not even that good). Especially liked the camera positions during the animated scenes, objects are often smartly placed.
- Headlander
It’s weird, it’s fun :)
- Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Is it the game or am I really hearing voices? (follow the game’s advice and play it with headphones)
- Hidden Folks
Might not be for everyone, given it’s slow pace.. perhaps play it in short games.
- Ryse: Son of Rome
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commander of the Armies of the North. General of the Felix Legions ..well, kind of =P
- Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
Start planning your moves even before you start the game.. you’ll need it
- The Adventure Pals
Another cute and fun game (not saying easy, ‘cause I’ve not finished it yet)
- The Talos Principle
May be a little heavy/boring if you try to play it all at once (all the more if you get stuck) but puzzles are really good.
btw, list is in alphabetical order, it’s not ranked.
…and happy new year, everyone ^_^
- CODE VEIN
I went in expecting a mediocre souls-like fully banking on the weeb appeal, but it was surprisingly competent, enough that I enjoyed it all the way to the end
- Coffee Talk
the gameplay similarities with VA-11 Hall-A are pretty obvious, but I’d go as far as to say I enjoyed Coffee Talk more
- Firewatch
one of the “must play” for people looking for novel experiences, I’m quite a bit late to the party but I finally filled that gap :P
- Horizon Zero Dawn™ Complete Edition
I stuck a bit too long in the opening area so the game started feeling pretty dull, but luckily it picked up after getting past a certain early point in the story, and after that I couldn’t keep the gamepad down for 40 more hours
- Marco & The Galaxy Dragon
It feels weird to describe a Visual Novel as a “high energy” experience but here we are. With a catchy soundtrack, a distinctive dual art style and a cast of improbable characters it was a total blast!
- Murder by Numbers
The duality of a linear Visual novel intertwined with gameplay - in this case “paint by numbers” puzzles - reminds me a bit of Phoenix Wright. Story, characters and art were all pretty competent, the game itself was a bit too long for my tastes as sometimes it showers you in puzzles with little to no story progression inbetween
- The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos
The humor might be hit-or-miss at times but behind that hides a pretty competent game tactical RPG à la Final Fantasy Tactics. Far from a recommendation at full price but maybe on a sale
- The House of Da Vinci
- The House of Da Vinci 2
Very similar to the games from The Room series, fans of those games need to hear no more :P
- There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension
You’re in for a treat.
- XCOM®: Chimera Squad
It was a bit buggy when I played it but still worth much more than the 10€ admission price
Weird question, but why are some of the games [completed]/[beaten] but not [owned]? I don’t get it o.O
Oh wait, is that bc those are games, I suggested?
fwiw, the status of beaten/completed/owned that I think you’re mentioning is part of the Enhanced BLAEO script – don’t have a clue why some aren’t showing up as owned if you’ve beaten/completed them though!
Yeah, I figured it’s part of the script :3
could be an issue in the script.
In my installed version it only shows the completion status in a pop window and filters out games that I do not own.
The script is also fucked up for me. It randomly shows (or not) games I own, and is not exhaustive. And it keeps changing randomly depending on refreshes.
K, thank you. I’ll just check the list by hand to make sure I didn’t miss a thing xD
Try to resync the list of owned games in the script settings. Sometimes it helps in my case
I’ll try auto syncing later, bc apparently it just synched. But no change so far :(
- Blasphemous - A great looking metroidvania that’s challenging but not too challenging. Overall a great game
- Fates of Ort - Probably the biggest surprise hit of last year, Fates of Ort is an interesting kind of action RPG with some neat mechanics
- Europa Universalis IV - Still my favourite grand strategy game, EU4 just keeps getting better and better.
- Total War: WARHAMMER II - The best Total War game to date? I would say so. Lots of faction variety and different units.
- Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus - A weird action point mechanic sets this game apart from its competitors. Breaking the game was half the fun! The unique soundtrack does not hurt either
- Plague Tale: Innocence - A surprisingly solid story makes this game well worth playing. I was not too fond of the end, but almost everything leading up to it was great.
- Vaporums: Lockdown - This game has some of the best puzzles I’ve ever seen in an RPG, and combat is no slouch either.
- Shadow Empire - A real beast of a game. This 4X strategy game might not look great, but it’s got more going on under the hood than almost any other 4X game out there.
- Batman: The Enemy Within - The Telltale Series - I’ve never cared about The Riddler as a villain, but this game changed my mind about him. One of the better Telltale games.
- Nordic Warriors - Did you like Myth? Then play this one!
Just a quick trivia bit, since there haven’t been any additional contributions for the moment: three-time champs!
These particular eleven games have made it to the BLAEO Community Picks three years running!
- Batman: The Enemy Within - The Telltale Series
- Cat Quest
- Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
- Glass Masquerade
- Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
- HITMAN
- Hollow Knight
- Murdered: Soul Suspect
- My Time At Portia
- Slay the Spire
- Stardew Valley
Thats suprisingly interesting ;-)
Maybe we could do a Best-of best-of someday
That is interesting! Sadly, I’ve only played one of them (Glass Masquerade) and have two of them in my backlog, plus another three of them in my alt’s or kids’ accounts. In particular, I need to play Hellblade. But it’s hard to get longer chunks of uninterrupted time to play and immerse myself in a game.
My suggestions
