Eight Years of Backlog Assassins Extraordinaire

Time flies when you’re having fun! Around this time of year eight years ago, a few of us started organizing our backlogs and motivating each other via the steamgifts forums, which in the following months grew into a Steam community and finally this website.

To celebrate the occasion, we thought a little event might be in order. It’s really easy: Between now and March 31st 2024 (around the 8th anniversary of the website), play 8 games you’ve added to your library since the creation of BLAEO (November 2015) and haven’t beaten yet. Your chosen games can overlap with other running themes and events. If this number seems low to you, challenge yourself to play some longer games during this time. Or, if you’re already done with your batch of 8 after a few weeks, just pick 8 more games.

Depending on participation, there might be a little giveaway at the end of this event for all participants who finish at least 80% of their list (that’s 6 full games beaten and made some headway into the 7th). If you’d like to join said giveaway, there’s a small rule: You can’t have more than 2 extremely short games (playtime less than 1 hour) on your list. If you don’t care about the giveaway, you can add whatever games you’d like!

I managed to finish MTaP, so that was a success. I have added a few items to backlog already in 2024… so I’ve been playing them haha

Managed to get to 8 games, however didn’t get to a lot of the larger games I thought I would play due to new releases/gifts etc.! At least I completed MTaP!

I’ll have to get an actual gaming PC to play that game again. My current laptop is not made for games and that’s a somewhat heavy game :D But one day…! Same with My Time at Sandrock

I went to purchase MTaS recently, but it disappeared off GMG apparently the week before I went to purchase it, and is only available on Steam now for more than double the price it was.. I’ll hold off on buying it for awhile now 😅

That’s weird. I didn’t see any updates on it, why would they suddenly change the price? o.O
I bought it last year when it was on sale … and I’m glad I did, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to afford it now :D

Ah when they changed from early access - they removed it from GMG and just upped the price a heap on Steam :(
I should have bought it earlier but thought I’d wait until I felt like playing it (which was a week late haha).. went opposite way for me this time.

Will probably wait for a bundle now..

I had internet issues when I played the game. Recently, my internet will just randomly disconnect because the driver randomly stopped and can’t start. I had to close the game I am playing and resetting the driver to fix it, but lately I have been too lazy to do that since it happens way too often. Steam won’t save offline playtime and achievement will unlock right after I got back online. This also means that my playtime is actually more than how it was listed on Steam.

Formidolosus

First one done. Ultionus was a fun arcade ‘run and gun’ type game with boss fights and a nice array of achievements. It doesn’t take long to finish a run, especially once you’re learned the route, but multiple playthroughs are required to get all the achievements. The characters and some of the plot points are definitely a bit ‘saucy’ which was a bit unexpected, but it was pretty tame by modern standards I guess, just consider a heads up if you are playing with kids around or anything.

Beat Trine 3. Certainly a black sheep in the series, but still enjoyable. Puzzles could have been a bit tougher, but I did appreciate that I could find the friangle collectibles without a guide and you could jump back to checkpoints later to mop up. It does work better as a 2d series, but I think people were judging this one too harshly based on the previous games, which is understandable, but it deserved a bit more love than it got.

Formidolosus

Redirection done. Simple concept for a puzzle game that got quite complex later on. I also appreciated the little extra ‘arcade’ they added with options to create your own mini games as well. Very clever. Biggest pain was the achievement for getting 25 likes on a mod you created. Fortunately it seems it’s a bit glitched and with a few friends subscribing and unsubscribing and reloading the game, it counted, even if they don’t own the game.

Finally got round to playing Future proof which I remember being recommended by Adelion on here years ago. It was certainly a unique game, with a looping mechanic that gives you 12 minutes to play around in a small town that’s about to be destroyed and discover various endings. The puzzles were mostly fair, but I did need to use Adelion’s guide for a few where I was a bit clueless.

Formidolosus

Tooth and Tail completed. A bit of a different take on the RTS genre, where you control a commander directly, rather than selecting units. The battles were also a lot smaller than some of the other classic RTS games. Still quite fun though, it had an interesting single player story told by progressively playing through the 4 different factions, and culminating in a final battle where you swap teams. The other thing I really appreciated was that instead of forcing you to play multiplayer they also gave an option to beat hard AI opponents to get all the achievements. Beating 2 opponents on the hardest difficulty was certainly a challenge, but thankfully there was a guide with a way to cheese it a bit and basically just starve them out, and it would have probably been impossible to climb the ranks in ranked multiplayer. All in all, not a bad game, glad I picked it.

Finished Clocker. Certainly not quite what I was expecting, but not bad. It’s essentially only really 3 main levels played from the perspective of father and daughter, but I loved the level of interactions you could unlock and discover with the forward and backward time mechanics. I needed a guide to get the ‘perfect’ ending as it’s quite involved. I would say it maybe needed more substance, but I suppose it would also get too complicated if they added more, so maybe it’s the right size?

Everreach: Project Eden, was a strange one. Obviously made by a small team with big ambitions, but needing something a bit more. It’s like they had ambitions to make a low budget Halo but ran out of time and budget and so compressed everything, resulting in a game that lasts about 5 hours. Which is ok for other genres, but does feel too short for this type of game. The graphics were competent enough and the voice acting actually alright for a smaller budget game. So it’s not horrible, but it showcases why these kind of games need a big studio behind them to pull it off. So I’m on the fence I guess, but still glad I did play it.

Shadowhand completed. I like how they used a simple solitaire gameplay and turned it into a card battler, complete with a story as well. I enjoyed Regency solitaire previously, so should have known this would also be good. Definitely got quite tough in the last levels, but it’s mostly a pretty relaxing experience.

Update: swapped Blasphemous for Batman - The Telltale Series, because I randomly had the urge to start it after watching some Batman movies and I didn’t feel like starting a hard-ish game like Blasphemous.

I’m ashamed that I’ve never entered a BLAEO event before. I usually just work through games myself and feel that the theme or timeframe of 1 month is a bit too restrictive or puts pressure on me to play particular games. The longer more open style of this event is appealing though, so I’m in!

I like the chronological approach to choosing games that a few people have gone with, so I’ll try the same. I joined in December 2016. I’ll go for one game for each year I’ve been here. I doubt I’ll get through all of them but hopefully, I can clear a few older ones!

I did not expect to see so much visual storytelling through only the level design and enemy placement, nor unique and occasionally surprising elements and tricks. Must have been mindblowing when it released.
